Kinship IACA Symposium Presented by the Indigenous Art Centre Alliance (IACA), this public symposium will explore the issues and opportunities faced by the artists and arts workers of Queensland’s remote, coastal and urban art centres. A fascinating insight into an exciting, often complex, part of the Indigenous art ecology.

Yidinji Corroboree Circle, Welcome to Country and Traditional Smoking CeremonyIn this traditional event, members of the five Yidinji clan groups, Traditional Owners of the Cairns region, come together to perform the dances passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

CIAF Presents, 15-18 August, is a celebration of Queensland’s Indigenous arts and culture

featuring exhibitions, dance, music, an art market, family activities and food festival.

This highlights program offers a taste of what this jam-packed weekend has to offer. So prepare yourself to rock out with Dan Sultan, marvel at the art works of international artists and Elders Ken Thaiday Snr and Roy McIvor, buy great art works direct from the artists at the Kinship Indigenous Art Market and experience dynamic dance performances from the Cairns Traditional Owners and Baiwa Dance Company.

CIAF Presents UMI Arts Big Talk One Fire concert, featuring Dan SultanThis family-friendly community event starts at 4pm and builds up to a deadly concert featuring Dan Sultan. ARIA and Deadly Award-winning musician Dan Sultan is back in the charts with the hit Rattlesnake, a collaboration with Way of the Eagle. With a new band and a new album on the way, Dan Sultan will present a knock-out set of new music and early favourites. Well-known Aboriginal comedian, traditional performer and dancer, Sean Choolburra, will be the Master of Ceremonies for the event.

This free community event is a celebration of Indigenous culture, primarily by Far North Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Big Talk One Fire features an exciting line-up of emerging and established musicians and traditional dancers, as well as an arts and craft market where you can purchase Indigenous arts and crafts directly from the artists who make them.

Don’t miss your chance to see Dan Sultan, described as Australia’s Black Elvis, alongside Sean Choolburra and a line-up of exciting new acts.

This is a 1OO% drug and alcohol free event. A co-presentation by CIAF Presents and UMI Arts.

Gimuy Fish and Food FestivalCairns Traditional owners the Gimuy Walubarra Yidinji people will be inviting Cairns’ top chefs to be a part of this tasty event where everyone gets to sample seafood and take part in discussions and exhibitions focusing on raising awareness of sustainable sea management. Make sure you’re there to cheer on the city’s top chefs as they battle it out for the 2O13 ‘cook off’ crown.

The festival is supported by GBRMPA and Australia Sustainable Seafood Day.

EXHIBITIONSKen Thaiday: Erub Kebe LeA survey exhibition from 199O to the present, Erub Kebe Le brings together significant works drawn from public and private collections to shine a light on the life and work of this senior artist from the Torres Strait.

Although known primarily for his Hammerhead shark headdresses, Thaiday’s work references his childhood of growing up on Darnley Island and the impact of his father’s influences as a choreographer and songwriter. Certain key motifs from throughout his career are represented, the Hammerhead shark, the Frigatebird and the Dari alongside rarely seen works drawing upon the artist’s love of fishing and his connection to an Island lifestyle.

Thaiday Snr is recognised as being the first artist to articulate the dance headdress for use in ceremonial dancing, which over time have developed into articulated sculptures representative of the use in dancing and Thaiday is seen as a leading artist maintaining the culture of the Torres Strait.

Reimagining – Roy McIvor Featuring a unique collection of artefacts, bark paintings and contemporary paintings from Hope Vale Indigenous Elder and artist Roy McIvor, Reimagining presents these works alongside newly recorded digital stories and a soundscape featuring members of the Hope Vale community. Reimagining is an immersive experience that takes audiences on an experiential journey through the life of one of Queensland’s most important visual storytellers.

EXHIBITIONSSea Journey: Our land, our home When Islander Christian teachers came by boat from New Caledonia spreading the word of God, Erub leaders embraced their message. The Coming of the Light was to change the Torres Strait forever. The people of Erub are in a unique position to tell this little-known Australian story through a sea journey that took place 141 years ago.

Sea Journey: Our land, our home recalls the momentous connection of Pacific histories to the Torres Strait triggered in 1871. This installation is realised through textiles, weaving and fabric printing, costume, body decoration and weaponry, modern and traditional sea craft and flotsam washed by ocean currents on to Pacific Islands.

Sea and Sky: Gail Mabo & Murris in Ink Printmakers together with Girringun Arts Centre ArtistsSea and Sky is a collection of mono prints created by the Murris in Ink printmakers who live and work in the Townsville region of North Queensland. This series references the animals, plants and people who are part of North Queensland, as well as telling stories from the artists’ traditional country. The exhibition features new mono prints and paintings by Gail Mabo and works on paper from Murris in Ink artists.

Alongside Sea and Sky, Girringun Arts Centre artists present a new collection of contemporary, sculptural works. The Girrigun artists continue to astound audiences with their Bagu; three dimensional, contemporary interpretations created from ceramic, found and up-cycled materials. Bagu are ancient traditional fire-stick tools used by the ancestors of the Far North Queensland rainforest people.

EXHIBITIONSKinship Curator and art centre manager Jeannie Heynatz navigated the remote Torres Strait, Cape York and the Gulf of Carpentaria in a bid to find the most exciting and diverse artworks being created in the art centres that are part of the Indigenous Art Centre Alliance (IACA). The result is Kinship, an exhibition of paintings, sculpture, weaving and textiles from established and emerging artists that explores contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art trends and practices.

Freshwater SaltwaterFreshwater Saltwater celebrates the rich artistic diversity of Far North Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and communities through a diverse range of mediums and subjects. The exhibition explores the holistic existence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parts and culture in the Far North, with a particular focus on connection to country.

The artists presented in Freshwater Saltwater are alumni of UMI Arts Exhibition Ready Program since 2OO8.
