IMPORTANT! Tom Plemons saw a report on the news that

National Park Passes will be going from $10.00 to $80.00 on

August 28th. Now’s the time to get one since there are events on

the CHVA National Tour that are at National Parks.

Director’s Message by Malcolm McIntyre

We had a great turn out last month at the 6 Mile Tavern for our Drive "to" Eat of the month, especially since the temperatures were hitting triple digits. Thanks to Kevin for getting the room lined up. We have lots of events going on in August: Our monthly meeting will be hosted by Lynn & Sue Anderson at their home (20240 W. 113th Terr Olathe, KS 66061) in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, and they will be providing dessert. Au-gust 12th is Cruisin’ the Capital, see Tom Plemons if you are planning on attending as he has a block of parking spaces. August 19th is Going Retro vintage camper, boat and car show at Po-mona State Park from 10:00-1:00. If you haven't been this is a great event and walking through the set up vintage campsites is a treat. Now if it would just quit raining!

Happy Motoring! – Malcolm

*Chevrolet’s answer to the Mustang, the Camaro, went on sale September 29, 1966, as a 1967 model. Of course, the Camaro tried to outdo the super-popular Mustang on every front. It’s success in that effort basically depended on whether you liked Ford or Chevy. But it would become a rivalry that continues 50 years later, with a 6 year hiatus. The Camaro came in many optional power varia-tions starting with a base 140-hp, 230 CID 6-cyl.in $2,466 hardtop, or $2,704 convertible body styles, $5 higher than the Mustang. Next was an optional 155-hp 250 CID 6-cyl., the base V8 was the 210-hp 327 CID V8 for $105.50 over the base six. For more power there was 327 4-bbl. with 275-hp, a 295-hp 350 CID V8, and a 325-hp 396 VID V8. Plus sporty RS ad SS options were offered.

Mobilgas Economy Run - Viva Las Vegas

On the upcoming trip, it would be nice to see the real results on to-day’s cars and roads. Would you consider tracking your mileage from start to finish?

Maximizing mileage safety, by prepping your vehicle was the starting point. Safe smooth, acceleration and braking were keys to success. Careful driving was right up there with safe handling. The original routes followed roads with speed limits from 20 to 50 mph. Con-sistent speed helped mileage too.

Following the 1968 Run they were ended. It seemed that Detroit went too far with the longer, lower, wider and heavier look with more length and less passenger room and no longer cared about gas mile-age since it was so cheap. When the nations of OPEC limited the supply of gasoline, Detroit countered with the Chevrolet Chevette and Vega, with the Citation to follow. Ford offered the Pinto as well as the Maverick. Chrysler rebadged the VW Rabbit and several Japanese models. AMC brought us the Gremlin and Pacer. Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Subaru were ready with small economy models.

We endured no gas on Sundays, 55mph speed limits, more Gulf Wars, the 350 Diesel Engine, Rotary Mazdas and even a Chevette Diesel.

Flash forward 44 years and the competition is getting closer between all makes of cars and trucks. CUV’s have replaced station wagons, big and small too. Trucks are everywhere.

The threat of running out of gas is gone so we’re building a pipeline with a chance for more pollution. Factories still run dirtier than cars and there is no such thing as clean coal. 75 mph and beyond exist in low populated areas. We now have street race cars and lots of ex-pensive remodeling shops.

Back from the sixties “Keep on Truckin’”.

Let’s hope we may get more people interested in the hobby!

This is why we should be aware:

J uly 4th was a travel day. I set out in my ‘62 Electra 225, “Laverne” headed to the 2017 Buick Club of America National

Meet in Brookfield, WI a western suburb of Mil-waukee. My route was my favored route across Missouri on US36. This route is now a 4-lane with one traffic light from the east side of St Joseph to Hannibal at I-35 interchange in Cam-eron. A few semis have found the route, called Chicago-Kansas City Expressway, but the traffic is nothing like I-70 or I-80. A very pleasant drive across the north Missouri hills. I had planned to make the trip a two day drive so I wasn’t worn out. My overnight was in Mon-mouth, IL which put me about half way to Brookfield.

The Buick Meet was a great success with over 300 cars displayed on the show field. Some notable cars were a 1915 Model D55 12–cylinder “Twin Six” prototype designed by Walter Marr, Buick’s engineer of the very first Buick in 1903. The car is owned by Marr’s great grandson. At one point during the car show, he started the car and had it running for a short time. It had a very inter-esting sound, unlike any early Buick. It drew a large crowd.

Another “one-off” special car order (SCO) was a 1965 Riviera Gran Sport on display in the hotel lobby. The car was painted by the factory in a Cadillac color, Samoan Bronze. The car was ordered by a Cadillac-Buick dealer from Niagara Falls, NY, Henry Parkinson Lammerts, Jr. The present owner is Col Andy Starr (USMC Ret). To say this car is over-restored is factual. It is equipped with all possible options available on a 1965 Riviera. It was absolutely stunning.

During the activities of the Buick meet, I took off on Friday morning for the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds and “The Milwaukee Mile”. The Harry A. Miller Club was holding a gathering of vintage race cars, “Millers at Milwaukee - Vintage Indy Car Event”. I took many photos and videos of cars rounding the track. It was an event for anyone that has an interest in vintage racers. The site and sounds were a walk through time.

On Sunday morning after the meet was over, a group of BCA members gathered for what is know as the “After Tour”. This event is hosted by Bruce & Shar Kile, this year being the 25th tour. Our first stop was at the Wisconsin Car Museum in Hartford. The building was the former manufac-turing plant for Kissel Car Company. The museum houses a variety of cars, trucks, and a working steam locomo-tive that is use 4 times a year for ex-cursions. After touring for a couple of hours and lunch, we headed to Water-town to tour the Octagon House & First Kindergarten in the US. The Octagon House was built by Joh Rich-ards, a pioneer Watertown settler. The house is a five story, solid brick construction completed in 1854. The house has constructed originally with central heating, running water and ventilation system. The home was only occupied by the Richard’s family member until it was given to the Wa-tertown Historical Society in 1938. The Kindergarten was started in Wa-tertown by Margarethe Meyer Schurz. It was moved to the Octagon House

grounds in 1956 and the interior depicts a early class in session. Sunday’s hotel was in Ft. Atkinson.

Monday’s travels took us to another museum and National Dairy Shrine in Ft Atkinson then Milton House museum, lunch and a stop at New Glarus Brewing (brewer of Spotted Cow, a favorite of Wisconsinites), a stop at a cheese factory in Monroe and back roads to Galena, IL for the night.

Tuesday was trolley tour of Galena, home town of Ulysses S Grant. After departing Galena, the tour visited a Dutch windmill in Fulton, IL built on the levee next to the Mississippi river. The windmill was constructed by Dutch craftsmen on site using traditional construction methods. On to the hotel in LeClaire, IA.

Wednesday started with a visit to Antique Archaeology (commonly called America Pickers). In my opinion, it was a bit of a disappointment. It was two buildings that were souvenir shops with high priced goods. On to lunch in Galesburg and a tour of a restored Orpheum theater in downtown Galesburg.

The final day of the tour, Thursday, we traveled across central Illinois from Macomb to Dickson Mounds State Museum. This is a site of ancient burial grounds of American Indians. The excavations started in 1927 by Dr. Don Dickson on the family farm. The area was used by University of Chicago archaeologists in the 1930s. The site became a state park in 1945 when the site was purchased from the Dickson family. It became a part of the Illinois State Museum in 1965. On to Lincoln, and lunch, then a visit to Lincoln Heritage Museum on the campus of Lin-coln College. The tour ends with the traditional “Pizza and awards party”. The tour is much like a CHVA tour. CB radios are a requirement. The major difference is you must drive a Buick since it is a Buick Club. No matter, it was a fun time. I just wish my air conditioning was working!

1942

CHEVROLET

FOR THE SERVICE OF AMERICA

The following is an excerpt from the back page of the 1942 Chevrolet

sales brochure.”

“There are times that try the re-sources of the nation...times that call for economy and efficiency from man and machine in order that those re-

sources may be conserved.” “Traditionally, Chevrolet ideally fits

today’s needs... “

“These new Chevrolet’s are built to be first in value, as they have long

been first in the hearts of motorists.”

By the time the 1942 cars were intro-duced, it was clear something would

happen. And, as with most other manufacturers, there were few

changes from the 1941 models with the exception of trim.

Series names were modified to reflect the body types in the series. The

Master DeLuxe was now the Master DeLuxe “Stylemaster”. And the Su-

per DeLuxe was now the Super DeLuxe Fleetmaster. The Fleetline 4

-Door Sedan continued as a sub-series of the new Fleetmaster line, now called Fleetline Sportsmaster. Pictured top right. It was joined by one of the few new cars of 1942, a

two-door sedan named the Fleetline Aero Sedan. See it’s description at the beginning of the text to the right.

1942 CHEVROLET

...continued...

The ’42 Chevrolets rode on the new for 1941 116” wheelbase, and were powered by the same proven 90-horsepower 216.5 cubic inch six-

cylinder engine used since 1937 with a three-speed transmission. With few changes, the 1946 to 1948 would be

very similar to the 1942 line.

Pricing for 1942 more than $100 high-er for most models over their 1941

counterparts. The new Stylemaster models were priced at $822 for the

Business Coupe, a 5-passenger coupe sold for $854, 2-Door Town

Sedan was $865 and the popular 4-Door Sport Sedan was $907.

In the Fleetmaster models the same models as above were priced at $880,

$912, 922, and $965 respectively. Additional models in this line were the 5-passenger Cabriolet for $1,159, and

the 8-passenger Station Wagon priced at $1,175. The top end Fleet-

master Fleetline models sold for $949 for the Aero Sedan and $991 for the

Sportsmaster 4-Door Sedan.

An additional comment to the pricing is that $8 was deducted from the “As delivered price” above on cars deliv-ered after December 11, 1941. This was due to deletion of the spare tire, to allow for more rubber production to

go to the war effort. On January 1,1942, chrome trim was deleted.

Production for 1942 was 258,795.
