All Saints' Day November 1
This holy day of obligation celebrates all the
saints, known and unknown, who have en-
tered heaven. These saints are also referred
to as the Church Triumphant.
History
All Saints' Day was formally started by Pope Boniface IV,
who consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Virgin
Mary and all the Martyrs on May 13 in 609 AD. The choice
of the day may have been intended to co-opt the pagan
holiday "Feast of the Lamures," a day which pagans used
to placate the restless spirits of the dead.
Pope Gregory III (731—741) later broadened this cele-
bration when he dedicated a chapel in St. Peter’s, Rome,
on November 1 in honor of all the saints and their relics.
Catechism 956 The intercession of the saints. “Being
more closely united to Christ, those who dwell in heaven
fix the whole church more firmly in holiness…They do not
cease to intercede with the Father for us, as they proffer
the merits which they acquired on earth through the one
mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus….So by
their fraternal concern is our weakness greatly helped” .
“I want to spend my heaven in doing good on earth”.
St Therese of Lisieux

All Souls’ Day
November 2
This feast day commemorates all the
faithful departed and is dedicated to
prayer and remembrance. Upon
death, the souls who are not perfectly
cleansed from venial sins or have not fully atoned for past
transgressions, must be purified and are believed to be in
purgatory. These poor souls are referred to as the Church
Suffering. Catholic doctrine teaches that the faithful on
earth, the Church Militant, can offer their prayers, alms
giving and especially the holy sacrifice of the Mass for the
holy souls to help them reach their eternal salvation in
Heaven.
History
From antiquity certain days were devoted to the interces-
sion for particular groups of the dead. The practice of a
general intercession was started by Abbot Odo of Cluny in
his monasteries in 998 and later adopted by the whole
church.
The date (November 2) was chosen to follow the celebra-
tion of all the saints in heaven, so the church on earth
could then turn to commemorate those souls believed to
be suffering in purgatory.
Catechism 1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory
to this final purification of the elect, which is different
from the punishment of the damned.
The primary scriptural basis for this belief is:
Maccabees, 12:26 - 32. "Turning to supplication,
they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted
out... Thus, made atonement for the dead that they
might be free from sin."
Additional references are found in Zechariah, Sirach, and
the Gospel of Matthew.
