Programme Review 2006 / 2007

In 06/07 the theatre rebranded as The Churchill (Theatre Music Comedy) to place greater emphasis on the broad programme both in the main auditorium and in the newly created Studio and Stalls bar spaces, increasing the venue’s appeal to those living in and travelling to the Borough.

Theatre

In the main house a quality, and varied programme appealed to a wide range of tastes and interests, comprising of work produced at and originating at The Churchill, combined with tours, many directly prior to, or post successful West End runs, concerts, comedy and community performances.

The programme included a selection of classic touring drama (Charley’s Aunt, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, The Unexpected Guest Little Women, Star Quality, Three Men in a Boat) and contemporary touring drama (An Hour and a Half Late staring Mel Smith, The New Statesman; and two Churchill produced plays, a new adaptation of the Hitchcock thriller Strangers on a Train and the regional premiere of Heroes.

Musicals included pre-West End runs of Buddy and The Rocky Horror Show and post West End dates from The Rat Pack and Saturday Night Fever, a production that premiered at The Churchill in 2003. Family musicals included Beauty and the Beast and Annie, plus Anything Goes and the world premiere of Hot Flush, co-produced by The Churchill.

A varied programme of dance included the return of Moscow City Ballet with a further repertory of three full-length ballets, accompanied by a full orchestra; the Irish dance spectacular Magic of the Dance; the Churchill’s resident community dance company Magpie Dance and the stage was once again transformed into an ice rink for the return of The Imperial Ice Stars in Swan Lake on Ice, this year extended to two weeks to meet demand.

The 2006/7 pantomime – Mother Goose – was produced for the second year by First Family Entertainment, a production company set up between the Ambassador Theatre Group and Live Nation to provide the biggest and best in quality family pantomime. The production starred popular television presenter Stephen Mulhern and Jeff Hordley of Emmerdale fame. Despite being the most difficult pantomime title to sell, nearly 40,000 tickets were sold and the theatre received enthusiastic feedback from its customers. Sales for Peter Pan, the 2007/8 pantomime starring Paul Michael Glaser, are already breaking records.

Programming suitable product for children and families, in addition to pantomime, is key to future audience development, in addition to ancillary education activities. The range and success of family productions increased further, providing parents with a wide range of popular family productions. Quality shows included Kensuke’s

Kingdom during the Easter Holiday, The Fimbles, The Gruffalo returning to meet demand, Fireman Sam, Annie and Beauty & The Beast. Co-productions between The Churchill and its producing partners The Churchill launched four productions in 06/07 prior to extensive national tours, while Stuart Little and This is Elvis continued to tour, all branded Churchill Bromley Productions, increasing the profile of the theatre and Borough throughout the UK. Strangers on a Train Patricia Highsmith novel in a stage version, somewhat similar

to the Hitchcock movie. Directed by Robin Herford, this show was remarkable for its consistently tense atmosphere, and riveting central performances by Alex Ferns and Will Thorpe. Toured throughout the Spring and Summer.

Heroes This was a revival of David Pugh’s production of Gerald Sibeylras’s play, translated by Tom Stoppard. The original West End production won the Olivier Award 2005 for Best Comedy. The Churchill’s production was completely new, and designed for touring. Starring Christopher Timothy, Art Malik, and Michael Jayston, it was adored by audiences.

Boogie Nights - The first compilation show of its kind, Boogie Nights was first 10th anniversary co-produced at The Churchill ten years ago and has been

touring the World ever since. This latest tour starred Antony Costa and Alvin Stardust.

Hot Flush The premiere of a brand new musical staring Marti Webb,

Sheila Fergusson, Rula Lenska and Sam Kane and produced with Paul Elliot and Michael Harrison.

Forthcoming co-productions will include Bedroom Farce and Deadlock. Music The Underground was launched, The Churchill’s live music venue located in the Stalls Bar to showcase the newest local undiscovered talent. The initiative started as a collaboration with the London Borough of Bromley and Bromley Mytime to present the Battle of the Bands Competition, and has now progressed into regular gigs for adults on Friday nights and under 18s on Sundays early evening with a dry bar, providing young people with an evening out with friends within a safe environment. The Underground also gives bands not yet old enough to play at typical music venues a chance to play before an audience. Attendance has averaged 200+ people per event.

Comedy The Bromley Comedy Club’s residency at The Churchill commenced in September, presenting the best rising stars of the comedy circuit each Saturday night in The Studio. Attendance is increasing and good feedback has been received from customers. The Comedy Club provides an effective opportunity to cross promote performances in The Studio and main auditorium. Community performances West Wickham Operatic Society presented Carousel in May and the London premiere of Titanic in November; Kentish Opera staged The Pearl Fishers in May and Ravensbourne Operatic Society produced the Wizard of Oz during the Easter Holiday. All provided the opportunity for local talent to perform on a professional stage. Attendance The total attendance for the year in the main auditorium was 180,738, Ticket sale successes were present in all sectors of the programming. This year The Churchill introduced more one night concerts and comedy to the season, with great success. This has broadened the range of shows presented in the main house, with comedy complementing the Comedy Club. A second sold out Grumpy Old Women gig was added to the season due to phenomenal demand and in May Al Murray played to a packed house once again. Music one night concerts included Glenn Miller in March, local band The Dualers in February and The Rat Pack in May. The Churchill will continue to develop this strand of programming. Six performances of children’s favourite The Fimbles achieved 86% capacity. As there is clearly an audience for very young childrens’ theatre, The Churchill plans to develop children’s performances in The Studio. Future productions The Churchill is co-producing the classic Alan Ayckbourn comedy Bedroom Farce, premiering Deadlock, a new thriller and in the Autumn a season of co-productions is planned, ranging from Doctor Dolittle starring Tommy Steele to Hobson’s Choice starring John Savident, a first co-production with the acclaimed Chichester Festival Theatre.

Forthcoming tours include the return of High Society, originally produced at The Churchill and directly following a West End season; Noel Coward’s comedy Hayfever starring Stephanie Beacham and the return of Birmingham Stage Company with Horrible Histories. ATG Programming Overview Since obtaining the lease, as a producer and the second largest theatre company in the regions, Ambassador Theatre Group has enhanced and maintained a good standard of programming, attracting some of Britain’s most popular entertainers and actors.

Marketing and Sales Strategy

New Audience

Political satire, The New Statesman, provided an excellent opportunity to attract a new audience. Of those who attended, 42% were new bookers.

New Initiatives

The Churchill has continued to develop a highly popular membership scheme for young people. Known as The Wild Card, the initiative is aimed at encouraging a broad mix of young people to engage in arts activities in their spare time. The theatre has experimented with the use of internet technologies to find new methods of marketing productions. A downloadable pod-cast was produced for Mother Goose and video clips have been hosted on the internet for a number of other shows. New programming strands have been successfully marketed to our audiences, in the form of The Underground and Bromley Comedy Club. Whilst the former encourages young people to experience live music in a safe environment, the latter has been successful in attracting new audiences to the venue.

Accessible performances

The marketing of access performances at the theatre continues to be successful. A mixture of audio described, sign interpreted and captioned performances are regularly well attended by patrons.

The Town Centre

The marketing department has developed close working links with Iain Payne, Bromley’s Town Centre Manager. This collaboration has seen an increase in outdoor promotional events for shows, including a hugely successful Christmas light switch-on event for the pantomime Mother Goose.

Press

The theatre continues to receive excellent media coverage in both regional and national publications. The theatre has forged an even stronger link with the News Shopper, providing a number of new co-promotional opportunities.

13

Churchill productions have been promoted by appearances on national television programmes. Live broadcast interviews took place with Alvin Stardust (Boogie Nights) on BBC TV’s Working Lunch, Shelia Ferguson (Hot Flush) on ITV’s Loose Women and Jeff Hordley (Mother Goose) on GMTV.

Theatre Friends

The Friends scheme continues to grow in popularity, with an annual increase in membership of 15%. Friends’ social events are proving to be hugely popular, with many now selling out long in advance.

Theatre Branding

A major re-branding exercise took place with staff members and a designer, to develop a new logo to reflect the revised name – The Churchill – Theatre Music Comedy. The new branding is aimed at attracting a younger audience, whilst also reflecting the broader range of activity that now takes place.

Since 2000, when the Ambassador Theatre Group took over the lease of The Churchill, it has:

Increased the marketing budget to promote the theatre and productions. Installed ENTA, a leading Ticket Sales system. Created a thriving Friends membership scheme. Achieved increased levels of business sponsorship. The Churchill has become a

popular venue for businesses to network. Turned The Churchill’s pantomime into one of the region’s top Christmas

events. Provided and promoted a range of accessible performances for the local

community. Development The Churchill continues to nurture excellent links with the business community, with sponsors supporting the theatre through significant levels of financial and in-kind support.

Current Corporate Associates include Royal Bank of Scotland, The Glades, BR1 Restaurant and sponsorship with the News Shopper guarantees a constant level of press coverage. Regular business cultivation evenings are held in order to further develop new and exciting relationships. Corporates can enjoy a range of exclusive benefits including unique marketing opportunities, invitations to VIP parties and tailor made hospitality events. Sponsorship was achieved for Mother Goose from The Glades Shopping Centre and local paper the News Shopper. Aside from financial benefits, the sponsorship deals included extensive free promotional activity for The Churchill.

The theatre also generated additional income acting as ticket agent for the Bromley Ice Rink, The Works Theatre Company in Kelsey Park and in the future for the Crystal Palace summer concerts.

The Churchill Education Activities Special Events The eighth Annual Playwriting Competition took place in October to allow the Education Department to pilot a new branch to the competition. From the 50 plays entered, six plays were short listed to work with a professional dramaturg to develop the writing to a higher staged level. The playwrights worked with the dramaturg and director through two sets of drafts until the play was in the rehearsal room with the actors. This provided the competition with a new and exciting edge, which provided the writers with a more valued experience. The theatre hosted a talk and book signing with Jacqueline Wilson, the children’s laureate. Local schools were invited and the auditorium was full to capacity. The talk was enthusiastically received (lots of screaming!) and many young people left excited to have met the literary star at the Churchill.

To complement The Churchill co-produced tour of Stuart Little, the Education Department developed a programme of events for the venues on tour. This included puppetry workshops for 5-7 years, 8-11 years and 12+. The show and workshops carried the stamp of the Churchill nationwide. For the fifth year running, Practitioner Keith Park ran workshops for local special schools on The Churchill’s stage. Using the set of Mother Goose, seven schools took part in 10 workshops, which allowed them to tell the pantomime story, using the rhythms of the stage and sign language to communicate. These were incredibly successful and the building of strong relationships with these schools has resulted in the planning of a Bromley and Lewisham Schools Showcase, to take place in July 2007. In January, in partnership with Connexions and Bromley Youth Services, The Churchill secured a grant from the Bromley Youth Opportunity Fund to run a musical theatre project with 30 young people. At its core is a group of young people who were “hard to reach” and were found through Connexions and various counselling and youth mentoring services. The project was named Teatro:Esplosivo and became a promenade performance of a hybrid of West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet. The project was highly successful and the audience was full to capacity. Teatro:Esplosivo has grown from strength to strength, and there are already plans to develop a piece called The Monkey Prince, based on a Chinese fable, for the Bromley Arts Festival in July.

In House Activities In response to curriculum changes, which require students to gain more vocational experience in the theatre, The Churchill has hosted a number of talks and tours for local schools. To meet the increasing demand, a Careers Day will be held in future for Bromley schools where student’s questions can be answered by members of staff with an accompanying pack. The Churchill continues to receive a huge number of applications for work experience placements, and has accommodated a large proportion of students. A new format work experience scheme is being developed to pilot in July 2007. This will provide an enhanced overview of what theatre is and how it works, while accommodating more students. Twenty-one students, working alongside a project manager, will devise a piece of theatre, learn to market, sell, design and perform the piece and operate front of house. Each department will work with the students to discuss how they work and set tasks for the group. The Department has continued to run regular show-related workshops using appropriate practitioners. These have varied from Monster workshops to accompany The Gruffalo to Princess workshops to accompany Beauty and the Beast. These workshops have sold very well, particularly the 5-7 years workshops. To meet demand independent workshops have been run unrelated to shows on the imaginative themes of Spacemen and sea creatures, which continue to be popular and have allowed young children to create masks. Classes The drama classes have developed greatly in the past year and numbers continue to rise. At present all young people’s classes are full. For the first time Act One Beginners will join the older groups performing onstage as part of the 30th Birthday celebrations. The Slow Motion Dance Group continues to meet each Thursday. The group has expanded and there are now 20 ladies who attend the classes, take part in tea and talk sessions during the class and ten come to see shows both here and around London as a social group. The group has developed some experimental contemporary work and works with a work experience student to develop a piece around hip hop dance.

Outreach In December the Department created a children’s Christmas grotto at the Princess Royal Children’s Ward for young patients to visit Father Christmas during the seasonal period. This created a new and productive relationship between The Churchill and the Princess Royal. Since December the theatre has delivered bespoke training for nursing staff on customer service. Plaster Cast Master Class is a further project with the Princess Royal children’s ward. Two of the theatre’s actors have been delivering exciting stories, and helping create some too, in the ward on a monthly basis. The format of these stories has all been dependant on the needs of the children in the ward at the time, but has been a huge success with all partners and participants enjoying themselves. In the future the Education Department will be working with Penge Girls Friendly Society to develop a story telling project with single teenage mothers. The Department is currently planning to work alongside Bromley Mytime to assist in the delivery of the Borough’s Moving On project to work with Year Six students preparing to move to Secondary School.

Access

The Access Committee continues to meet regularly to ensure The Churchill is committed to providing the highest quality access provision for all its patrons. A second successful external advisory group meeting took place in October. Borough residents were invited via articles in the press and contributed to a positive discussion. The agenda included the ADAPT Trust Audit, future improvements, the forthcoming programme of assisted performances and an invitation to discuss the patrons’ theatre experience from booking to leaving the venue. This experience has been improved with the introduction of the Enta ticketing system. Patrons’ access needs are now included on their profile to enable the Ticket Sales Assistant to book suitable seats, for example the need for an aisle seat for a guide dog. New automated doors were installed to the main entrance. Under the management of the Ambassador Theatre Group The Churchill has provided Sign Language Interpreted Performances for 6 years and has now built on this foundation to offer a broader programme of assisted performances, covering a range of impairments. Today we also provide Audio Described and Captioned performances, touch tours were introduced this year and in 07/08 Sign Language Interpreted workshops for children will be introduced. Attendances for accessible performances are at an all time high. Accessible performance details have this year been incorporated into the main body of the Season Brochure and into standard show leaflets and posters, inline with recommendations from the DDA. Two members of the Ticket Sales team became BSL qualified in 06/07and The Churchill continues to provide access training for all staff. In the future, a third external advisory group meeting is being planned and The Churchill’s access provision will be audited by The ADAPT Trust.

Impact on the Community In July 2007 The Churchill celebrates its 30th birthday. Plans are already in place to create an appropriate celebration, to be the centrepiece of the Bromley Arts Festival– evidence that The Churchill continues to be seen as a major force in the Borough. Staff continue to play a major role on the Bromley Arts Consultative Panel, including the planning of the Bromley Arts Festival. The theatre maintains a close working relationship with the Bromley Town Centre Manager, working together to maintain the safety, security and vibrancy of the Town Centre. The Churchill Volunteers programme continues to grow with over 20 becoming regular volunteers aged 16-18. During the year, many Volunteers were recruited as Theatre Hosts when they turned 18. The Volunteers receive full training in customer care and watch the performance without charge in return for one evening or afternoon a week. For the second year, the theatre took part in the Open House London Weekend. Demand once again was very high and tours of the building took place every half an hour. The Churchill will take part again in September 2007. In addition to the Education Programme, staff at The Churchill have promoted the theatre locally by delivering talks to groups, including the Friends of Ashcroft Theatre; Rotary Club at Sundrige Park Golf Club, Bexley Ladies Friendship Club and Chislehurst Methodist Monday Fellowship. The theatre continues to be used by local businesses as a venue for meetings, including Bromley Business Focus training, as well as twice weekly Potters House Christian Fellowship meetings, Wedding Fairs, conferences in the main auditorium, Research International and NOP Market Research during the year and the Bromley Police dog training section is allowed monthly use of the Stalls Foyer when not otherwise required. The Theatre provides a platform for local talent with Ravensbourne Operatic Society, West Wickham Operatic Society and Kentish Opera presenting shows throughout the year. The Theatre employs 75 people with a total payroll for the year of £719,750.
