Disasters pose problems for resource management that are different from those in more routine emergency events. Disasters may require the use of resources (personnel & corporate, facilities, supplies, and equipment) from multiple organizations and jurisdictions; as well, may require the use of non-traditional resources. After a large-scale disaster, local governments do not have the capacity to manage the over-whelming needs of an entire community. With dependence on municipal services, residents are exposed to long-term recovery efforts.
When it comes to emergency management and emergency preparedness, we all have a role to play. Individual citizens and communities, academia, emergency first responders, the private sector, faith based and volunteer organizations, and all levels of government must work together to provide an effective and coordinated response to disaster.
Bridges of Love’s Faith Emergency Preparedness Initiative’s goal is to facilitate the development of a network of coordinated local churches to complement and enhance performance with existing secular emergency management agencies. As the various sectors collaborate with a sharing of resources and expertise, the impact of disasters on individuals and communities CAN be significantly reduced.

CHURCHES HELPING NEIGHBOURS
CONNECTING
Building relationships of trust with a community
takes time and intentionality but there is nothing
more exciting or fulfilling than building bridges of
love suspended by the steel cables of the
GREAT Commandment and the GREAT
Commission. Church members focus shifts to a
transformed and compelling life—becoming salt
and light in a needy and searching world.
An effective resource to make that initial contact
with your neighbourhood is our Emergency Con-
tact Numbers Magnet. This postcard sized
fridge magnet contains emergency numbers
as well as contact information for our Coordi-
nation Centre. When first responders are over-
extended, our FEPI network of local churches,
provides an alternate place to call for as-
sistance.
Handing out fridge magnets along with infor-
mation for emergency preparedness is an easy
endeavor for your church. It provides a vehicle
making a non-threatening introduction of your
churches desire to care for the community; being
prepared to assist during a disaster.
CHURCH - A SAFE GATHERING PLACE
Muster point indicates the exact location of an
assembly area. During a disaster, communica-
tion is critical but it is often hard to obtain the
correct and most up-to-date information. With
an exact point of contact, current information
can be obtained, giving peace of mind.
With a Bridges of Love FEPI Muster Station sign
in a church window it will relay to your neigh-
bours that your church is a safe refuge place to
collect information on how best to proceed.
When passing out the magnets with emergency
information to your community, let them know
your church is a designated meeting place,
during a disaster.
FEPI CHURCH CONTACT & RESOURCE ASSESSMENT FORM
Finding accommodation for flood volunteers dur-
ing the Alberta Flood in 2013 was an easy process
due to information stored in our FEPI CHURCH
CONTACT & RESOURCE ASSESSMENT data-
base. Churches with showers, Inn from the Cold
cots, and those with food pantries were easily
identified due to information gathered in our AC-
CESS data base. Churches helping Neighbours
Can you imagine the positive impact FEPI church-
es could have on our municipality and the assis-
tance we could offer our communities should we
experience another disaster? Can you imagine
the community in which you live being genuinely
thankful for your church? Can you imagine a large
number of your church members actively engaged
in, and passionate about, community service?
