Your absorption, the devo-tion that wells up from your heart and is expressed in ges-tures, in song, in the responses: if you do it correctly and not absent-mindedly, then in a certain way your witness is one that moves people,” (Pope Benedict XVI, 2006).

THE LORD OF LIFE At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings teem with life and abundance. Both the first reading, from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will us to be ill. Illness and death entered the world through the presence of evil, the Wisdom author tells us. Mark’s sto-ries of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and resusci-tating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is from God. As the Son of God he does not will that anyone suf-fer illness or death. In the face of such power, the second reading, from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could raise the dead to new life, “though he was rich, for your sake he be-came poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new life from Christ demands our response in charity. Copyright © J. LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#87 Yes to the new relationships brought by Christ Today, when the networks and means of human commu-nication have made unprecedented advances, we sense the challenge of finding and sharing a “mystique” of living together, of mingling and encounter, of embracing and supporting one another, of stepping into this flood tide which, while chaotic, can become a genuine experience of fraternity, a caravan of solidarity, a sacred pilgrimage. Greater possibilities for communication thus turn into greater possibilities for encounter and solidarity for eve-ryone. If we were able to take this route, it would be so good, so soothing, so liberating and hope-filled! To go out of ourselves and to join others is healthy for us. To be self-enclosed is to taste the bitter poison of immanence, and humanity will be worse for every selfish choice we make. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Some commentators today talk as if in past times we were fully engaged with our neighbors. Well, yes we were, but our neighbors were really our neighbors. Truth be told we didn't know anyone else and so we were involved in their affairs as they were in ours. We didn't have many other distractions. Today our neighbors are everyone, everywhere. They are staring at us from every screen; their voices, their cries, their achievements, their disasters are swirling all around us. We have not yet developed the abilities to empathize with so many as we could in the past with the few. Every now and then we do respond wonderfully but we are not equipped to think and feel universally. All our astounding technology can put us in touch with what is happening in our world and even beyond. But technology or science, even education and training cannot of themselves enlarge sufficiently the capacity of our spirits and hearts. That comes from another source. Greater fraternity, deeper solidarity, walking together on pilgrimage and heartfelt empathy can only be achieved if we are willing to em-brace more joyfully the Gospel. Just as in the past the Gospel transformed society, so today we have to believe that a deeper embrace of that same Gospel will make us, all neighbors, all brothers and sisters.
