Holy Trinity Book Store Review Sing Them Home Paperback 542 pp.$14.95
by Stephanie Kallos Grove Press 2009
This novel takes place in Emlyn Springs, Nebraska, a fictional town near Beatrice, and
what fun it was to encounter its many references to Lincoln: the State Capitol, Tastee's,
the traffic signal at 9th and South Streets—I've been there, done that, haven't you? UNL
and Go Big Red football are in there too, so reading it is sort of like just walking outside
and breathing it all in for real. The story focuses on three young adult siblings coming
together to deal with their father's death, all the time contending with the many
allurements and enticements young people face in this 21st century. Hovering over
them always is the mysterious disappearance of their mother who was swept away in a tornado when they were
children.
Interestingly enough, I am told that the author formerly lived in Lincoln and was a member of Holy Trinity
Church. Her writing ability is to be greatly admired; I love the way she brings her characters to life on the page.

De Colores-(of the colors) is the greeting from the
Cursillo #25 weekend. This event was held in Norfolk at the
monastery June 8-11, 2017. It was a weekend filled with shared
prayer, individual meditation, worship, study and fellowship.
God's unconditional love was experienced in many ways -
laughter, tears, smiles, hugs - certainly an emotional experience.
This weekend provides a strengthening of faith - no matter who
you are or where you are in your journey.
An Ultreya (meeting with prayer, song and fellowship) is
scheduled for Saturday, August 12, 2017 at St. David's-8800
Holdrege St from 10 am to 3 pm. This is a follow up to the
weekend - also, others who have made a weekend previously are welcome to come and share. Keep watch for
more information about this spiritual walk with Christ. Rev Susanna has information about this activity.
Summer Adult Forum The Anatomy of Hate: A Dialogue to Hope July 2, July 9 and then continues July 23
“To understand the best of us, we must first be willing to take a full look at the worst of us.”
~Thomas Hardy
Join us Sundays from 9:15-10 am between the services, starting July 2nd, to watch and discuss the film The
Anatomy of Hate: A Dialogue to Hope. We will watch the video in 20 minute segments followed by a 20 to 25-
minute guided discussion on the content. I have hope that this documentary will be the catalyst to a dialogue
about how we can love one another better by humanizing the de-humanized and recognizing that we are all
children of God. Presented by Claire Atkins.
Summer Book Group: Wednesday afternoons at 3:30 pm The Harbor Coffee Shop
in Piedmont Shopping Plaza
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
Starts July 12
This fascinating book chronicles the life, and more specifically the cell life
of Henrietta Lacks, an African American woman who died in the late 50’s from
cervical cancer. Her cells continue to alter the course of medical history as they
continue to be a mainstay in research. Because of her, many cures and care
protocols have changed the course of medical care for many people. Part history
of medical science history, part American biography and totally amazing. Please
read Part 1 for the first meeting on July 12.

This year Community Ministry is once again collecting school supplies specifically for
Holmes and Clinton Schools. We have been in contact with staff at these two
schools who told us of their specific needs. Both schools have a high percentage of
children from low income families and have a need for basic school supplies and
snacks. Both schools participate in the Lincoln Food Bank Back Pack Program.
Items Needed: Spiral notebooks, tablets, plain white or colored paper for art
projects, rulers, pencils, erasers, pens, highlighters, colored pencils, crayons,
scissors, colored markers, Kleenex, boxed snack bars or cereal bars and other small
packaged snack items.
Donations will be collected until noon Sunday, July 30. Items will be sorted and divided the week of July 31.
We will deliver the items to each school the week of August 7. Thank you for supporting this important
ministry to Lincoln school children!
The Chase is on! Saturday, August 26, 2017
St Monica's Amazing Chase that is.
And Holy Trinity has a team! We have a full team this year with returning
Chasers Amy Bloomquist, Alan Everett and Jacob Manyang and our
newest Chaser, Scott Dostal! Thanks to the generosity of the Holy Trinity
Congregation, we are already off to a great start, but do need your help to
improve on last year’s fundraising!
The Amazing Chase is now in its 12th year and is the primary fundraising
activity for St. Monica's. Some people have asked "What do Chasers have
to do?" I would describe the Amazing Chase as a scavenger hunt with
challenges that take you all over Lincoln! Teams are given a clue that
leads them to a certain location --in the past we have ended up at the Food Bank, Wilderness Ridge, Holy
Trinity and the Haymarket! Once at the location, one team member or the entire team will complete a challenge
before getting the next clue. Challenges have included eating onion rings dangled on a string of ribbons from
the balcony of the Railyard, performing various yoga poses, building very specific Lego men and identifying
trees on East Campus! The final clue leads to the finish line and completion of the Chase!
We need your support! Prayers and moral support are always needed, AND we also need financial support. If
you are interested and able, you can donate to support the Holy Trinity Warriors either online at:
https://sna.etapestry.com/fundraiser/StMonicas/ACXII/team.do?participationRef=1315.0.440428576 and click
on "Sponsor our team" Donations can also be made through Holy Trinity--just be sure to put Holy Trinity
Warriors on your check or donation envelope. Any questions--ask Amy Bloomquist or Darlene Percival!
Stay tuned for updates between now and "Chase Day!"

Exercise class M-W-F ~ 9:30-11 am We’re into mobility and flexibility at Exercise Class! We lie on the floor for about 20
minutes of tummy exercises and relaxation. Those who don’t want to get down on the
floor sit in a chair for this part of class. We stretch, walk, use dyna-bands. We close with
moving meditation and have a lovely camaraderie in the group. Our group contributes
about $600/year to Holy Trinity. Hope you’ll join us!
Deacon Christine Grosh; [email protected]
Thank you to everyone who contributed diapers to build our tower. Twenty-one packages in all and that will diaper a lot of babies!
Dear Holy Trinity community,
In this abbreviated summer newsletter, I miss having the space to talk with you
about happenings here. I want to let you know that I will be going on a short
sabbatical in the early fall, from August 18 until the Spaghetti Dinner on
September 30. The Rev. Verneda Kelly will be filling in and I’m sure you will all
have a great time together. During this time, the deacons will be doing an adult
forum that will coincide with my time gone-stay tuned for details! Also, when
the rector is not present (as I won’t be), the person in charge of the church is your
senior warden, Dana Visger. You will, of course, be in my prayers as I travel to see my sons, my friends and
this beautiful country. I hope you will keep me in your prayers! ~Rev. Susanna DesMarais
July 20th at 6 pm in the church
During Lent we started a centering prayer group. We met weekly to pray in silence together, and to explore what
centering prayer meant to us. We agreed to reconvene after Lent on a monthly basis. This is your invitation to
join us in prayer and conversation. We will meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6 pm in the sanctuary.
Everyone is invited, whether you are just exploring this type of prayer, or new to it, as well as regular
practitioners. Questions-please talk with Rev. Susanna.
Please see www.holytrinitylincoln.com for the full calendar of events!
