Reflections by Father John 2017 House of Charity—Bishop’s Annual Appeal

This year’s House of Charity is called, “Encounter the Living God.” The House of Charity-Bishop’s Annual Appeal is a vehicle by which the Living God is encountered. Donations to the House of Charity help us to share love and provide security to those we serve as they build and rebuild their lives spiritually, physically, and emotionally. In today’s Gospel Jesus calls us the salt of the earth. In his parable – analogy he was comparing salt as the key ingredient to all food, so too is mercy the key ingredient to all love. The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 25 so beautifully brings this out when Jesus says, “the least that you have done to your brothers and sisters you have done unto me.” In our giving, we help our brothers and sisters and we do so because like everyone we are all made in the image and likeness of God and we have infinite worth and dignity, simply by being a human being. We recognize that and therefore in our generosity we extend our hand with no reservation but give it freely to help a brother and sister in need. The Church of the Holy Family understands the concept of family and that each family is holy and its own little Church as St. John Paul the Great constantly reminded us. I want to thank you for the last number of years we have not only made the goal but have surpassed it. This shows your bleeding hearts, a bleeding love for your fellow man. It has moved me so much that each year I also increase my own donation.

In the end, however, it’s not about us so much making back a 10% bonus or telling others we have made a goal, but rather the good feeling we get in knowing we have given to people who are in great need as well as helping so many Diocesan services to flourish, one being VITALity and Hospitality which is run by our very own Deacon Jerry along with Father Sanjai. Once again, I ask that you contribute to the 2017 House of Charity. Give what you can and if you yourself are in difficulty and find it hard to give please at least pray for our parish and Diocese which means so much. Thank you for your love of me, Father Alfred, Deacons Joe and Jerry, the great love you have for our parish family and the Church at large, may God bless you abundantly with His graces and love.

Father John

SUPPORT FOR THE HEARTS ON THE MEND: GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP AT HOLY FAMILY We all have experienced losses in our life. The normal and natural reaction to any significant emotional loss is grief. And grief hurts! We need support and help to get through these times. Grief Support Groups help us cope with the loss of a loved one by being with people who share similar experiences. They also journey with us in rebuilding our lives and provide us with a safe environment and the accurate information about grief and grief recovery.

The support group will meet for eight weeks on Thursdays, beginning February 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fausto Conference Room. Whether your grief is new and raw or lingering and unresolved, these sessions will help you to heal and move toward peace and acceptance of the absence of the loved one in your life. If you are someone who has lost a dear one to death; we welcome you to join for these sessions.

For more information, please call Deacon Joe at the parish office, 856-228-1616, or email: [email protected]

Ginny Murphy is our parish coordinator/liaison for Interfaith Hospitality Network—IHN. The note below from Ginny will give you some insight of the many volunteers who assist her several times a year with hosting of homeless families in our Aquin Center. If you would like to help please email Ginny at [email protected].

I wanted to take a minute and thank our over 60 volunteers that help pull off another successful IHN week at Holy Family Church. This month we hosted four families and were at maximum hosting capacity. Our guests included a young couple with an 8-week-old baby. The families were very grateful for your support!

I also wanted to share a story from this morning, when I drove the families back to the day center. As they were unloading the van, one of the fathers stayed behind and ask me if I was driving the van to the next church. When I replied that I was, he said to me "Thank you, Holy Family always treats us so nice." On the ride home I thought about this statement and how difficult it must be to move their families to a new church every week, and how each host church must be different.

You, the volunteers at Holy Family Church, always go above and beyond. Some of the examples from this week: (1) one of our meal providers stopped by a couple nights prior to her night and asked the guests if they could have any meal, what would it be? She cooked them Shrimp Alfredo, (2) one of our drivers donated a tank of gas simply because the van needed gas on his shift,(3) when the newborn baby had to be rushed to the hospital late one night, our team was magnificent. One volunteer with a car seat in her vehicle, drove the mom and baby to Kennedy Hospital. The overnight hosts managed protocol perfectly so that the director's were aware of the situation, (3) a Holy Family employee came out late one night to assist with a facility issue and provide supplies needed by the baby, (4) a college student, home on break, came by and set up his own Xbox and games knowing that this week included two older teenage boys, (5) one of our high school students got up early on a Sunday morning to set up beds in the classrooms.

So many of our volunteers step up every single host week and never ask for any recognition because that is not what service is about. Whether you cook, host, drive, do laundry, shop or sleep overnight, please know that your efforts are very needed and appreciated. I see the face of Jesus in all of you!

Keep up the good work. We have a little rest until the week of May 14, 2017. Please share your experiences with IHN with your friends at Holy Family and ask them to get involved in this great ministry. We need some more volunteers to spread out the workload when we host. Most volunteer tasks take less than two hours. I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart.
