October 24 – 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18;2 Timothy 4:6-8,16-18;Luke 18:9-14

To be in the image of God We always see it in novelas or soap operas: Women (and sometimes even men) who seem to be very religious, even fanatical, and appear to be buying God’s favor through their good actions in an orphanage or hospital. But when we observe them in their daily lives, they are evil, deceitful and hypocritical. The worst thing is that they believe that they have every right and authority to control and make their decisions in the lives of others and they have no need for anything or anybody...even of God. Today’s first reading says that the prayer of the humble person pierces the clouds. God bends in love towards those who know their needs deeply. But a person who is self-sufficient, even if God did come down to him, since he is unaware of his need, he does not present it. Furthermore, the self-reliant person probably would not even realize that God was fulfilling his needs even without being asked. Self-sufficiency is a type of blindness and deafness that encloses people in their own sense of security and prevents them from knowing God. It is a type of idolatry, which doesn’t acknowledge that it is a radical rejection of God. The self-reliant person feels he or she is above everyone else, but the truth is they live in the most radical loneliness. They feel good, important and so perfect that they don’t need relationships with others, much less a relationship with God. They become isolated, impoverished, and less human. What makes a person truly human is a relationship and communication with others. This is really being an image of God since, God being love, is communicative. Love can never be closed in upon itself. But those who are self-sufficient don’t love and therefore, they erase the image of God from themselves. They sink even further into their lack of humanity. They think they have everything and in reality they are only destroying themselves. For reflection Do I sometimes feel very good and perfect because I abide by the norms and go to church? Do I feel a need and dependence on God? Do I become frustrated and sad when I feel helpless about something?

Sun. Oct.24th – Sun. Oct.24th – Life Night on finding God. So many people speak of “being on a journey” or “searching for God in my life”. Yet for a Christian, we don’t have to search for God because He has already found us! God has become a man in Jesus and revealed Himself to us. We have only to open ourselves up to God’s revelation of Himself. How do we do this? That’s what this Life Night is about!! We will be playing a board game in groups that has to do with opening ourselves up to God in real life situations. We will continue with a skit about God’s presence, a teaching, small group discussion, and a special closing prayer.

Skit practice continues as usual on Fridays from 7-9:15pm at the Convent.

If you haven’t yet become a Fan of “St. Raymond’s LIFE TEEN” on Facebook please do so to receive the latest updates.

Father Bill on Marriage. Let us discuss another of the seemingly endless problems of contemporary life. My goodness, I might have to do this for the rest of my life. What to do? Let us begin. What about marriages that have taken place civilly. Please do remember you are married legally. This means you have much more protection than those in Common -Law marriages. Let us stop for a minute. I think we must remember baptized Catholics must be married by a priest or an authority recog-nized to perform the marriage. Bet you thought I forgot that little fact. What does that mean? Well it means that your marriage must be recognized as OK or as our beloved pastor says "It must be okey dokey" (I suspect he talks this way because he was raised in the Bronx. What do you think?) Next time we will discuss what is called "convalidation" P.S. I know he doesn't want me use such big words. I think you are as smart as River Edge, N.J! See you next time.
