TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME– September 3, 2017
Reflection
“Our World” There is room in the world for loving;
There is no room for hate. There is room in the world for sharing;
There is no room for greed. There is room for justice;
No room for privilege. There is room for compassion;
No room for pride. The world is ample enough for the needs of all;
Too small for the greed of a few. Let us learn that we depend on each other;
That the eye cannot say to the hand “I need you not”
Let us be delicate with persons. Let us touch the earth lightly with hands like
Petals. Let us speak softly and carry no stick.
Let us open the clenched fist and extend the open palm.
Let us mourn till others are comforted, Weep till others laugh.
Let us be sleepless till all can sleep untroubled. Let us be meek till all stand up in pride.
Let us be frugal till all are filled. Let us give till all have received.
Let us make no claims till all have had their due. Let us be slaves till all are free.
Let us lay down our lives till others have life abundantly.
Let us be restless for others, serene within Ourselves.
Let us be as gods. - John Harriott, SJ
St. Teresa of Calcutta
The remarkable woman who would be known as Mother Theresa began life named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Born on August 26, 1910 in Skopje, she was the youngest child born to Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu, Receiving her First Communion at the age of five, she was confirmed in November 1916. Her father died while she was only eight years old leaving her family in financial straits. Gonxha's religious formation was assisted by the vibrant Jesuit parish of the Sacred Heart in which she was very involved as a youth. Subsequently moved to pursue missionary work, Gonxha left her home in September 1928 at the age of 18 to join the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as the Sisters of Loreto, in Ireland. She received the name Sister Mary Teresa after St. Therese of Lisieux. In December of 1929, she departed for her first trip to India, arriving in Calcutta. After making her First Profession of Vows in May 1931, Sister Teresa was assigned to the Loreto Entally community in Calcutta and taught at St. Mary's School for girls. Sister Teresa made her Final Profession of Vows, On May 24, 1937, becoming, as she said, the "spouse of Jesus" for "all eternity." From that time on she was called Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa left a testament of unshakable faith, invincible hope and extraordinary charity. Her response to Jesus' plea, "Come be My light," made her a Missionary of Charity, a "mother to the poor," a symbol of compassion to the world, and a living witness to the thirsting love of God. As a testament to her most remarkable life, Pope John Paul II permitted the opening of her Cause of Canonization. On December 20, 2002 he approved the decrees of her heroic virtues and miracles. Mother Teresa was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 19, 2003.
Respect Life Society Prayer for Priests – We suggest that you pray for priests each day. Monday could be for Pope Francis; Tuesday for
Cardinal Dolan; Wednesday for Fr. Caruso; Thursday for Fr. Patrick; Friday for Fr. Justice. Saturday and Sunday could be for the priests of the Archdiocese, especially those who have served us here at St. John’s. On Thursdays from 3 -4,
we pray the Rosary for Priests after the Divine Mercy Chaplet and then add a Rosary for the Unborn. Please join
us in the Chapel for Adoration. A Comment from Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, Philadelphia – “While Americans presume that the
Constitution guarantees their rights, in practice, our rights survive or disappear based on how firmly we defend them.”

The message Jesus had for His disciples is the same for us today. Being a follower of God requires love, strength and difficultly. When we follow Jesus, He is with us and hears our prayer when we need help.
