A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 26, 2020

“As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed him. He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and im-mediately they left their boat and their father and fol-lowed him.” There must have been something special in the meeting of the two sets of brothers with Jesus. Had He met them before? Why did He call these four, and not someone else? Did they understand what He was calling them to, and what did being ‘fishers of men’ mean? How were they able to leave their father and business? Jesus continues to walk with us, not by the sea of Galilee, but He does. He calls all without exception for His work. We find Him, not only at church but on our block, at the mall, during the PTA meeting, at the ball field, and in our parish life. Do you recognize Him? We never know why, how or when, the same Jesus summons us but the task is the same as that which was given to the brothers. What if they had refused? Where would we be today? What is He asking of me?

How would you define the word “grace”? What does “grace” do for you? For a few minutes, please kindly reflect on the explanation of grace as it is provided in our Catechism. “Grace is favor, the free and undeserved help that God gives us to respond to His call to become children of God, adoptive sons, partak-ers of the divine nature and of eternal life.” Grace enables us to participate in the life of God.” Our Church teaches there are different types of grace, albeit from all the same divine source– God. “Sanctifying grace is an habitual gift a stable and supernatural disposition that per-fects the soul itself to enable it to live with God, to act by His love.” Another term for it is “habitual grace.” Actual grace refers to the intervention of God I our lives. It could come at the beginning of conversion or in the course of the work of sancti-fication of the soul.” In addition, there is sacramental grace. These are “gifts proper to the different sacra-ments.” Furthermore, we believe there are special graces. This type are also called “Charisms.” They are bestowed upon individuals for the good of the entire church. The charisms of one individ-ual may differ from the other individual, however, each is given by God to the person, to build up the Church. Finally, it must be remembered, no matter the type of grace which is present in an individu-al, first and foremost it comes through God’s initi-ative! Indeed, we should be eternally grateful to God.
