San Benito de Nursia, Fiesta: 11 de Julio Lema: "Ora y Labora", representado emblemáticamente por
el arado y la cruz.
San Benito nació de familia rica en Nursia, región de Umbr-
ía, Italia, en el año 480. Su hermana gemela, Escolástica,
también alcanzó la santidad.
Después de haber recibido en Roma una adecuada forma-
ción, estudiando la retórica y la filosofía.
Se retiró de la ciudad a Enfide (la actual Affile), para dedi-
carse al estudio y practicar una vida de rigurosa disciplina
ascética. No satisfecho de esa relativa soledad, a los 20 años
se fue al monte Subiaco bajo la guía de un ermitaño y vi-
viendo en una cueva.
Tres años después se fue con los monjes de Vicovaro. No
duró allí mucho ya que lo eligieron prior pero después trata-
ron de envenenarlo por la disciplina que les exigía.
Con un grupo de jóvenes, entre ellos Plácido y Mauro,
fundó su primer monasterio en la montaña de Cassino en
529 y escribió la Regla, cuya difusión le valió el título de
patriarca del monaquismo occidental. Fundó numerosos
monasterios, centros de formación y cultura capaces de pro-
pagar la fe en tiempos de crisis.
Vida de oración disciplina y trabajo
Se levantaba a las dos de la madrugada a rezar los salmos.
Pasaba horas rezando y meditando. Hacia también horas de
trabajo manual, imitando a Jesucristo. Veía el trabajo como
algo honroso. Su dieta era vegetariana y ayunaba diaria-
mente, sin comer nada hasta la tarde. Recibía a muchos para
dirección espiritual. Algunas veces acudía a los pueblos con
sus monjes a predicar. Era famoso por su trato amable con
todos.
Su gran amor y su fuerza fueron la Santa Cruz con la que
hizo muchos milagros. Fue un poderoso exorcista. Este don
para someter a los espíritus malignos lo ejerció utilizando
como sacramental la famosa Cruz de San Benito.
El santo que había vaticinado tantas cosas a otros, fue ad-
vertido con anterioridad acerca de su próxima muerte. Lo
notificó a sus discípulos y, seis días antes del fin, les pidió
que cavaran su tumba. Tan pronto como estuvo hecha fue
atacado por la fiebre. El 21 de marzo del año 543, durante
las ceremonias del Jueves Santo, recibió la Eucaristía. Des-
pués, junto a sus monjes, murmuró unas pocas palabras de
oración y murió de pie en la capilla, con las manos levanta-
das al cielo. Sus últimas palabras fueron: "Hay que tener un
deseo inmenso de ir al cielo". Fue enterrado junto a Santa
Escolástica, su hermana, en el sitio donde antes se levantaba
el altar de Apolo, que él había destruido.
Dos de sus monjes estaban lejos de allí rezando, y de pronto
vieron una luz esplendorosa que subía hacia los cielos y
exclamaron: "Seguramente es nuestro Padre Benito, que ha
volado a la eternidad". Era el momento preciso en el que
moría el santo. Que Dios nos envíe muchos maestros
como San Benito, y que nosotros también amemos con
todo el corazón a Jesús. En 1964 Pablo VI declara a

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)
Reflection on Zechariah 9:9-10
Our 1st lesson today comes from the OT book of Zechariah.
Part of its message is contained in the very name of the
prophet himself. The Hebrew name Zechariah, means ‘the
Lord remembers’, and the fact of God’s good memory is this
book’s source of hope and encouragement. God remembers,
and he’ll never forsake his people. That seems to be the central
message of this book.
Our lesson from Zechariah can be dated to the time of Alexan-
der the Great - around 333 BC. It talks about horses and don-
keys. The horse was considered a symbol of military power
and might - much like stealth bombers, aircraft carriers & nu-
clear submarines these days.
Earthly rulers like Alexander the Great, believed in symbols of
power and authority. And people expected a triumphant gen-
eral to enter his city on a war horse - much like a modern day
leader might fly a fighter jet and land on an aircraft carrier, for
the photo op.
But unlike the great warriors and heroes of history, who would
ride to battle and return triumphantly on horseback, the king in
today’s prophecy comes riding a donkey. Not a victorious
horse, but a lowly beast of burden - the donkey, symbol of
peace.
Earthly rulers, with very few notable exceptions, believe in
symbols of power. They trust for their security, in strength of
arms and military might.
But the scene described in our 1st lesson is that of humility and
peace. This king rides a placid donkey rather than a prancing
war horse.
This is confirmed later in today’s lesson: ‘he will banish war
chariots from Ephraim and war horses from Jerusalem. The
bow of war will be banished’. That is to say, he’ll decommis-
sion all military hardware. It will be a time of unparalleled
peace.
Matthew and the other evangelists see the ancient words of
Zechariah, as being fulfilled by the humble king, who rode
precariously and ridiculously on a donkey - towards his deadly
throne, the cross. And this king will not establish his kingdom
by force or power.
In today’s gospel Jesus says ‘learn from me, for I am meek
and humble of heart; And you will find rest for yourselves. For
my yoke is easy, and my burden light’.
The Church herself, if she is to be the bearer of God’s truth,
must make this invitation her own. “Come to me all who labor
and are overburdened, and I’ll give you rest”.
She must be a strong and forceful voice for peace and must
speak out uncompromisingly against war and military adven-
turism. She must raise her voice to protest the killing of the
unborn. And must speak for the poor and the marginalized -
people who are unable to speak for themselves. Otherwise she
cannot call herself, the Bride of Christ.
Jesus has shown us the way of sacrifice, and the way of love.
He has gone that way before us- and let’s pray for the earnest
desire to follow him.
