PASTORAL REFLECTIONS The sacrament of Baptism is the most important sacrament from which all sacraments flow, and indeed our entire life in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we celebrate the baptism of Jesus this weekend may we too ask God to pour out a fresh anointing of the Spirit on us, so we may be equipped with all the spiritual gifts to do Gods will in the world. Blessings and peace. Love, Fr. Paul

SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS ON STEWARDSHIP “John answered them all, ‘I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming . . . he will baptize you with the Holy

Spirit . . .’” – Luke 3: 16

The Catholic Catechism states that “Jesus’ immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God’s will.” In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus – the gift of ourselves. Once we surrender ourselves to God, we will know in our hearts what God calls us to do.

BLESSING OF CANDLES

On Sunday, January 31st, St. Mary's will celebrate the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas. It is customary on this day to bless candles, which, when lit, represent Christ as the light of the world. In the coming weeks, candles will be for sale as a parish fundraiser. Candles purchased will be labeled and blessed at the 11:30 AM Mass on January 31st, and may be taken home after. Parishioners are invited to bring any other candles they would like blessed on Candlemas to the Rectory by Friday, January 29th.

YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE Consecrated men and women of today have the duty to be witnesses of the transfiguring presence of God in a world that is evermore disoriented and confused, a world where toning down has substituted sharp and distinctive colors .... Belonging to the Lord: this is the mission of the men and women who have chosen to follow Christ – chaste, poor and obedient – so that the world may believe and be saved. To belong completely to Christ so as to become a permanent confession of faith, an unequivocal proclamation of truth that frees us from the seduction of the false idols that deceive the world.

– Pope Benedict XVI, 2006 Address to superiors general of institutes of consecrated life and societies of apostolic life.
