“What are You Looking for?” Dear Sisters and Brothers, On this second Sunday of Ordinary time, the scriptural readings are about God’s call to be with him and to share that experience with others. The First Reading is about calling of Samuel (1 Samuel 3:3-10). Samuel did not rec-ognize God’s call at first. But with the help of Eli he rec-ognized God’s call. Samuel grew up and the Lord was with him and he continued to listen carefully to what God was saying. And, in turn, he passed on what he had heard to others. The gospel (John 1:35-42) is also about calling. John the Baptist points Jesus out to his disciples, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” When two of John’s disciples, Andrew and John, heard this they immediately followed Jesus. Seeing them following him, Jesus asked them, “What are you looking for?” He asked them the most fundamental question in life. Jesus asks each of us the same question: “What are you looking for?” What’s the goal of life? What am I looking for? What am I really trying to get out of life? Some are searching for material security. They would like a posi-tion which is safe and enough money to meet the needs of life. That is not a wrong aim. But it is a low and an inadequate aim to provide security for life. Some are looking for what they would call a career, for power, prominence and prestige. If this is directed by motives of personal ambition it can be a low aim. If it is directed by motives of the service of our fellow human being it can be a high aim. But it is not enough. Many seek God for temporary reasons and for material benefit- looking for a good job, house, wealth, power, position, name, fame, or peaceful life. Even if we got everything we search for, still we have a thirst for something more than all these. Jesus gets a beautiful answer from Andrew and John. We want to see “where you are staying”. The question is not simply about a street address. They did not wish to speak to Jesus only on the road but as friends in his own house. Jesus’ answer was “Come and see”. Jesus knows their inner thirst. It is an invitation for a deeper and personal relationship with Jesus. When we take one step towards God, he takes seven steps. But the first step should be ours. When we take God seriously in our lives, God also will take us seriously. The essential meaning of “seeing” is the seeing of faith (John 9). Only with that seeing can the disciples know where Jesus truly dwells, with-in the Father. “Come and see” is God’s invitation for fellowship and communion with him. Knowing Jesus and where he stays is not primarily a matter of intellectual knowledge. It is not a matter of information. (Continued in the column to the right) > > > > > > > >

< < < < < < < < (Continued from the column on the left) It is not a matter of information. It is not a question of knowing all theology, nor is it a question of being an ex-pert in all the teaching and the rules of the Church. Knowing Jesus is a matter of to be with him. To know him in the Gospel sense is to seek, find and respond to his loving presence in our daily lives. It comes from trying out the teaching of Jesus even when it seems to go against what most people think: to love unconditionally, to for-give, to carry one’s cross after Jesus, to suffer persecution for being a follower of Jesus. This experience can be achieved by faith and prayer. The two disciples accept the invitation. They do go and stay where Jesus stays and have the experience of God’s love. John who wrote the gospel finishes the paragraph with these words: “It was about four in the after-noon.” (John 1:39). Even after several years, John clearly remembers the time of their meeting with Jesus. It was an unforgettable experience for them. It had a tremendous influence on them. What was the result of staying with Jesus? Andrew went to his brother Simon and told him the good news of his discovery of the Messiah. And it didn’t take much to get Simon to “come and see” who this Jesus was. Jesus reached out to Simon in the same way he did to Andrew earlier. When we discover something very important and valua-ble it is natural to want to share it with those closest to us. God’s Word is never to be kept just for ourselves. That would be like the man who kept the talent and buried it in the ground. Let us be attentive to the call that the Lord issues to each of us every day and every situations of life. Yours in Christ, Fr. Abraham Kochupurackal CMI Pastor

Word of Life— “There is such a wide spectrum of issues involving the protection of human life and the promotion of human dignity. Good people frequently disagree on which problems to address, which policies to adopt and how best to apply them. But for citizens and elected offi-cials alike, the basic principle is simple: We must begin with a commitment never to intentionally kill, or collude in the killing, of any innocent human life, no matter how broken, unformed, disabled or desperate that life may seem. In other words, the choice of certain ways of acting is always and radically incompatible with the love of God and the dignity of the human person created in His image.” United States Conference of Catholic Bishops “Living the Gospel of Life,” © 1998 USCCB.

Year of Saint Joseph begins locally and worldwide December 8, 2020 and ends December 8, 2021.
