Honor Mary

Jesus performed His first public miracle because His Mother asked. He said “no” at first, but His Mother asked for help. The Bible is clear—Jesus listens to His Mother.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

First Reading: Acts 8:5-8, 14-17 Philip preaches to the people of Samaria, who accept his word after witnessing the miracles he performs. Peter and John pray that they will receive the Holy Spirit.

Second Reading: 1 Peter 3:15-18 Christians are urged to remain steadfast in their allegiance to Christ, giving evidence always of gentleness and hope.

Gospel: John 14:15-21 In his words to the apostles at the Last Supper, Jesus promises to send them a comforter, a Paraclete, the Spirit of truth, who will be with them always. ©1999 Bon Venture Services, Inc.

The Intercessor’s Corner: St. Rita of Cascia

Born in 1381 near Spoleto, Italy, St. Rita was known for her holiness and charity from a young age. She wanted to be a nun but was forced into marrying when she was twelve. Unfortunately, her husband was cruel and violent. After eighteen years, she was widowed. Following the deaths of her sons, she finally entered the convent, where she became known for her piety, kindness, and humility. She is the patron saint of impossible causes.

Jesus understands “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). It is astounding to think that in His human nature, Jesus experienced fear and suffering, just like we do. Even better, He wants to help. Fear. Early in His life, soldiers hunted Him down to kill Him. His neighbors threatened Him with harm when they didn’t like His teaching. He endured a horrific Passion. Jesus coped by relying on prayer, grace, and confidence in His Father’s will. Suffering. During His crucifixion, Jesus was sick, dehydrated, exhausted as His body began shutting down. On the Cross, it became harder and harder to breathe. Jesus experienced how it feels for a body to fail. He knows how it feels to die. When we are sick and suffering, we can turn to Him for a cure, or the grace and strength to accept His will. All we have to do is ask.
