CHURCH OF SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA IGLESIA DE SAN IGNACIO DE LOYOLA
Third Sunday of Lent Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma
March 7th, 2021
Lent – a time for cleansing the deep personal sanctuary of our hearts and for driving out of our lives whatever clutters our discipleship, blocks our ears to the word of God and the prophets and distracts us from trading justly and lovingly with the gifts God has given us.

From the Desk of Kathy MaherDear Parishioners,
As the proverb goes, “March comes in like a lion…”
This year, our collective “roar” will include the anniversary
of our awareness of the descending pandemic. Like all anni-
versaries, difficult and pleasant, we store details of these days,
and can find ourselves remembering them with hindsight. I
can remember Friday, the 13th of March 2020 where I found
myself giving a training and retreat day for faculty in a Catholic
high school in Boston.
We had just finished singing the gospel song “The Storm is
Passing Over, Hallelujah!” when people started taking notice
of the text messages buzzing their phones. Word was just in:
schools would be closing and it was time to get ready. We refo-
cused on trying to prepare and anticipate the obstacles ahead.
A new storm was rolling in.
No matter what our narrative of this year has been, we have
all been weathering the storm. We have all had losses, big and
small, and endured uncertainty and stress. We
are not so naïve to think that March will “go
out like a lamb” or that this storm is passing
anytime soon. How then might we journey
through this Lenten season and become an
Easter people able to sing hallelujah in our
hearts and homes (as we can’t yet even sing in
church)?
I am finding some renewal from the Stead-fast: A Call to Love reflections that some of our
parishioners are engaging with this month. It
has helped me to consider each day the question: “During Lent
in these turbulent times, how can we persevere with a steadfast
spirit, rooted in love? Even the Steadfast logo brings me daily to
reflect on a tree shaped like a cross that suggests groundedness
and flourishing, despite knothole wounds.
With God’s guidance and grace, we have the capacity to re-main steadfast in God’s love. Yet, we must also prepare our-selves to be witness to “what remains”. Deacon Julius Lee shares his story of remaining after Hurricane Katrina devas-tated his faith community. “The storm is gone, but the after the storm is always here”. (1) Recovery is possible if we make peace with “what remains”. Theologians refer to this experience as “witnessing Holy Saturday”, that middle place where there is a complex relationship between life and death. This is often
event of the cross, but rather a middle ground of coping with the aftermath of storm. It is our hope and faith that God will somehow pull us forward into the territory of new life and
I imagine I will be “witnessing Holy Saturday” when I return
to a K-8 Catholic school in Lynn for a retreat day this upcom-
ing Friday the 12th of March 2021. The school has accompa-
nied students and families in-person throughout this year. The
principal shared with me that the faculty are in need of renewal
Storm is Passing Over, Hallelujah!" (¡Aleluya!
Steadfast: A Call to Love (Con Firmeza: un llamado a amar)

but have persevered with determination and even joy. I expect
that I will also hear stories of “what remains”, the residue of
what accumulates after constantly balancing anxiety with cour-
age and maintaining resilience in the face of stress. I know that
I will encounter a steadfast spirit, rooted in love.
I have also been honored to witness this same spirit among
my colleagues at St. Ignatius, among our fellow parishioners,
among my neighbors, friends and family. As Lent journeys
into the Easter season, we may still find ourselves experiencing
“Holy Saturday” and that is okay. May we continue to deepen
our understanding of “what remains” and be open to God’s
constant invitation: “Remain in my love” (John 15:9).
- Kathy Maher
(1) Shelly Rambo, Spirit and Trauma:
A Theology of Remaining

Although farming has sustained families in Ahuachapán
(eastern El Salvador) for generations, climate change and
soil erosion have caused harvests to shrink considerably.
Edwin Carlos, a 17-year-old eager to support his parents
and two little brothers, did not see farming in his future.
However, after a teacher told him about how new techniques and
technology were changing the way farming was being done to help restore the
environment, he changed his mind. He, with a group of students, is learning the
importance of distancing when plowing and how burning harvest residue harms the
land. He has learned how to use water properly so that it is not wasted and organic
manure and other resources to provide nutrients to the soil.
“He who knows has an obligation to act,” says Edwin Carlos.
Thanks to CRS’ Raíces Ahuachapán program, nearly 1,200 families started home
vegetable gardens to grow nutritious foods like onions,
tomatoes, cucumbers and squash.
