Dear parishioners, Happy Pentecost!

With this Feast of the Coming of the Holy Spirit, our Easter Season draws to a close. On that first Pentecost, the Apostles first ventured out into the World to spread the Gospel. Their proclama on began li le by li le, first just outside their door, then just in Jerusalem, then to Samaria, An och, Anatolia, Rome…

Fi ngly, this year our Pentecost corresponds to our community’s ini-al steps at reopening. Towards that end, your parish reopening task

force has begun to implement some of our plans.

• The livestream Sunday Mass has begun at 5:00 PM on Saturday Evening. This allows parishioners who par ci-pate by viewing at home to be able to do so at any hour they wish on Sunday. • Saturdays at 3 PM we are having drive-through Confessions in the Chapel Parking Lot. • Wednesdays Adora on of the Blessed Sacrament will take place in the Church from 10 AM un l 2PM and conclude with Benedic on. • The Church has been reconfigured to accommodate Social Distancing in prepara on for the resump on of Masses (not yet).

As we progress, further measures will be enacted with an eye of safe-ty.

Since the obliga on to a end Sunday Mass is s ll suspended, parish-ioners who feel uncomfortable, especially persons who might fall into at-risk categories, are encouraged to con nue to self-distance by stay-ing home.

With the permission for very small gatherings, however, a beau ful possibility has been given for our parish Pentecost Sunday.

At the livestreamed Mass this weekend, Catechumen Azeem, who was to have been bap zed at the Easter Vigil at the beginning of this Easter Season, will finally be able to become a Catholic before the season closes! In fact, the water we blessed at the Vigil has been saved and he will in fact be bap zed with it.

Addi onally, in a ny private celebra on on Sunday, Joanna, our can-didate for entrance into full communion, will also be received.

Our newest brother’s and our newest sister’s entrances into new lives as Catholic Chris ans are blessed expressions of the hope and evange-lizing spirit this glorious feast celebrates!

Come Holy Spirit anew on us all!

In service of Him with you,

NEWS FROM THE

PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE

love, faith & peace

We will happily be sending home details about the Class of 2020 Commencement programs for our 12th and 8th grade students during the next few days.

Congratulations to Mrs. Tran who returns this week with a new baby at home, and congratula-tions to Mrs. Meisel who is leaving to prepare for the birth of her own child this summer!

The end of the school year often brings changes to our staff. This year we are sad, but happy, to announce that Mrs. Mendoza will be retiring after many years of service to our school, stu-dents, and community. We will have some time to say goodbye properly, but for now please join me in wishing her the best for many years to come.

Please remember that school is closed on Mon-day, May 25th, for the Memorial Day Week-end. Please pray for all of our Veterans and their families. We will resume our regular Re-mote Learning schedule on Tuesday, May 26th. All classes will continue until the last academic day of the school year, which is June 11th. Be well!

Many of our families understandably are wondering when First Holy Communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation will be pos-sible for our children. As things stand now, it is unlikely that tradi-tional communal celebrations of these sac-raments will be possible before the Fall at the earliest. Any parents in our program who might wish their child to receive these Sacraments indi-vidually before then, are asked to communi-cate with the Religious Education Office to arrange. I am happy to say that as we re-enroll your students into our program for the 2020-2021 calendar year, we will be promoting them or "bumping them up” automatically through our computer database. No longer will par-ents have to fill out the same registration form year after year and deliver it to our of-fice. The only families that will have to fill out a registration form will be the parents of a new 1st grader or all our new families that have recently moved here or transferred from a different parish. For these families, we have even updated our reg-istration form to make it easier and it is now avail-able on the religious ed page on our website: stdoms.org.

The only thing we ask of our returning fami-lies is to update any contact information and please email it to our office so we will have everything 100% accurate in our com-puter system. We will plan on maintaining the weekday that your child has been attending already, but if changes are required, please email Elisa at [email protected].

The lives of the saints speak to us across time; perhaps, we see our stories echoed within theirs? If their holiness can shine in their lives, maybe we can radiate God’s love in our own time.

Nothing is known of Bede’s parentage or very early years. He was taken to the monastery of St. Peter in Jarrow which was in Northumbria, England in the year 680, which means his birthdate was in the year 673. The instruction of the scholarly monks, combined with what they came to realize was Bede’s genius, pro-duced a man who is considered one of the most extraordinary scholars of his day; versed in all of the scienc-es, philosophy, arithmetic, grammar, ecclesiastical history, the lives of the saints and Holy Scripture. Bede spent most of his life within the confines of the monastery, only traveling outside its boundaries for a few months. From the time of Bede’s ordination to the priesthood at age 30 until his death, Bede was occupied with learning, writing and teaching. His writings were filled with such faith that a Church council ordered them to be read publicly in churches while he was still alive. His first writings were intended for use in the class-room; his works fall into three groups: grammatical & scientific, scriptural commentary and historical & biographical. Bede’s earliest works included treases on spelling, hymns, figures of speck, verse and epi-grams. His revered reputation was mainly based on his scriptural commentaries, copies of which are still in monastic libraries throughout western Europe. One of the things he is most well-known for is the use of Anno Domini (“in the year of our Lord”) which is the method of dating events from the time of Christ’s birth. It came into general use through the popularity of his Historia Eccelesiastica and two works on chronology ~ the main reason it is so widely used. Bede also studied the discipline of computus, the science of calculating calendar dates. He also gave instructions for computing the date of Easter from the date of the Paschal full moon. Bede’s most famous work, his Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum or Ecclesiastical History of the Eng-lish People, gained him the title of “The Father of English History”. Divided into five books, it records events in Britain from the raids of Julius Caesar to the arrival of St. Augustine of Canterbury in Kent; his intent was to show the growth of the united Church throughout England. It was a vital source to the history of the conversion of the Anglo-Saxon tribes to Christianity. His scholarship and importance to Catholicism were recognized in 1899 when Pope Leo XIII declared him a Doctor of the Church, the only native of Great Britain to achieve that designation. Bede died on the Feast of the Ascension in 735 on the floor of his cell reciting his favorite prayer, “Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As in the beginning, so now, and forever…” Bede became Venerable Bede because of his holiness. He holds a privileged and unrivalled place among first historians of Christian Europe.
