It’s that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can’t escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? The Lord often comes to us in wonderfully surprising ways. Let us be prepared. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Dear Parishioners,

Today we begin the sacred season of Advent. Last night we began our festival of lights and I am grateful to all who purchased wreaths to beautify our parish property and to tell all our passerby that Christ is the reason for the season. Today, also, our diocese will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the priestly ordination of Bishop Francis Xavier Ford of Maryknoll. He was a native of Brooklyn and was in the first group of Maryknoll missions to go to China in 1918. He eventually became the bishop of a newly erected diocese and died on February 21, 1952, as the result of the treatment he received in prison. The Diocese of Brooklyn has received the privilege from Maryknoll to be the official sponsor of Bishop Ford’s cause for sainthood. The Bishop Ford Guild is in the process of being formed and I will share that information with you as soon as possible. The mass today will take place in St. Joseph Co-Cathedral on Pacific Street off Vanderbilt Avenue at 3:00pm. All are welcome. Friday of this week will be the Solemnity of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, patroness of the church in our country and a holy day of obligation. The mass schedule will be: Thursday 7:00pm (English) Friday 6:45am 8:30am 11:45am 7:00pm (Spanish)

Our deanery observance of Advent will be on Thursday, December 14th, st 7:30pm in St. Bernadette Church, 13th Ave and 82nd Street (enter from 14th Avenue). The 69th Street bus passes the church door. All are welcome to our Annual Fiesta in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tuesday, December 12th, at the 7:00pm mass. The celebration will continue in the gym. The priests of the parish will be available for the sacrament of reconciliation (confession) on Monday, December 18th, from 3:00pm to 8:45pm. Try to make Advent a truly spiritual time by receiving this sacrament of God’s mercy. Last but not least, you have my heartfelt gratitude for your generous response to my appeal concerning our shortfall in the Annual Catholic Appeal. We have raised an additional $12,000.00 and have passed our goal. Thank you again and again.

Let’s pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. Noone
