THISISMYBELOVEDSONThis Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of theLordclosestheChristmasseason.Inthescripturesweseeonemoreepiphany,ormanifestation,oftheSpiritofGodinJesus—butthistimeitisasanadult,ratherthanasachild.Jesus’baptismalsoservesastheinaugurationofhispropheticmissionandthemessianicage.Today’sreadingfromIsaiahdescribesGod’schosenMessiah,uponwhomGod’sspirit rests. In theActsoftheApostlesPetersaysthat“GodanointedJesusofNazarethwith theHoly Spirit and power” (Acts10:38).Finally,intheproclamationfromMatthew’sGospel Jesus’ baptism in water goes almostunnoticed. Dear Parishioners,

Happy New Year! This is the first bulletin that has not been written on a holiday

schedule in three weeks.

Today we celebrate the Baptism of Christ and the beginning of His public ministry. It

is natural to ask ourselves, “Is there a way I could become more involved in the life of the

parish?”

Just to alert us to a homebound parishioner would be a starter. Frequently, we talk to a

family at the time of funeral arrangements and we find out the person was homebound for

years but the priests and pastoral care minister never knew.

Today’s feast is also an occasion to reflect on the gift of baptism that was given to us.

How grateful we must be for such a gift!

Speaking of gratitude, I am very grateful to all of you for your generosity in all the

collections through the Christmas season. Our Christmas gift to the parish has reached

$50,309. This collection was a great help since the boiler for the new school failed shortly

before Christmas. I anticipated an expense of $30,000 but thankfully, the bill was slightly over

$22,000.

Representatives of the parents of Holy Angels Catholic Academy and St. Anselm’s

Catholic Academy have been meeting with representatives of the Diocesan Office of

Education to further the plans for the new Bay Ridge Catholic Academy. I ask your prayerful

support so that a Catholic grammar school education will continue to be available in Bay

Ridge.

We also must pray for an end to the Anti-Semitic crimes and for world peace.

The Vocation Office is pleased to announce two new programs geared for young men in Junior High and High School:

THE JEREMIAH PROJECT

This program is for high school boys who show some interest in vocation to the priesthood and/or college seminary. This program invites students to participate in a monthly overnight experience and share in the fraternity of our college seminarians.
