A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE After meeting Jesus, the Magi returned home by “another way.” What in your family needs to be done “another way?” Do you need “another way to resolve differences, to communicate or show affection? This is a new year, time to change what isn’t working. Take a tip from some wise men, there’s always “another way.”

MARRIAGE MOMENTS-It is the middle of winter cold in the northern hemisphere. What was your first winter living together like? Do you have newer, better ways of keeping warm enough today? ~©2016 by Susan Vogt,

We observed His star at its rising.

On this Solemnity of the Epiphany we celebrate the adoration of the Christ child by the Magi. Royal astrologers from the east, these three Kings mentioned in Matthew's gospel, followed a star to the Bethlehem stable where Jesus was born. Isaiah had foretold their coming more than 500 years earlier when he prophesied the glory of the Lord radiant among God’s chosen people. He foretold that riches and wealth would be brought, gold and frankincense, in tribute to the Messiah. The three kings represent those outside of the Hebrew covenant, the nations of the Gentiles for whom salvation would now be forever opened. St. Paul makes this very point in his

letter to the Ephesians when he writes: “in Christ Jesus the Gentiles are now co-heirs with the Jews, members of the same body and sharers of the promise through the preaching of the gospel.” Before the coming of Christ, salvation was given to the “chosen people” alone; but with Jesus’ birth, a new age dawned in which all nations would be called to become children of God. So, our psalm response reminds us that “All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him.” For the birth of Israel’s Messiah, entrusted to God’s chosen people, would become the Savior of all mankind. And while we commemorate the royal gifts of the three kings: gold, frankincense and myrrh, we also recall that they came from “far off and distant lands” to adore the Messiah of the Jews-Christ the Lord. Seventeen years into a new century, a new millennium, we can be assured that this Christ event has echoed across the seven continents and reverberated throughout every century for the past 2,000 years, heralding God’s merciful love for everyone who has been created in his image and likeness. In Greek, epiphany originally meant a manifestation of the divine in this world. Later, it came to also designate important events in the life of the king, such as his birth or his coronation to the throne. The religious celebration of the Epiphany originated in about the 4th century. While there were different commemorations in the Christian Mediterranean world, in the Roman Liturgy the focus of this solemnity was the adoration of the Magi: the kings from distant lands to the east following a star to Judea to offer homage to the newborn King of Kings, Jesus Christ the Lord. PARENTING POINTERS-According to tradition, 3 kings came to honor the baby Jesus and we call this feast the Epiphany (the recognition of Jesus as God by the larger world). Consider giving something gold, sweet smelling, or soothing (myrrh) to your child today as a sign of God’s presence within him or her. ~©2016 by Susan Vogt, OPEN APPLICATION PERIOD NOW UNDERWAY FOR CLASS OF 2021!-OLSH’s open application period continues through April 30, 2017.
