Over the course of this year we have been focusing on the Lord’s Supper in order to deepen and broaden our understanding of what we are doing when we commune together on Sunday mornings (or any other me, for that maer). He challenges them to give the people something to eat. Of course, that is impossible. There are only five loaves and a cou- ple of fish. Even with these meager resources, Jesus insists that everyone sit down as he blessed the food. We are challenged to do the same thing – we do not turn people away who are seeking. We are oſten pushed because of limited resources (not just money), but we have faith that God will provide. When we break bread together we affirm that we believe that Christ will provide what we need to do what he has asked. “Choosing the Beer Part” (Luke 10:38-42) While Jesus was vising in the home of his friends Mary and Martha, the sisters were torn as to how to treat their guest. Mary sat and listened as Jesus taught while Martha scurried about distracted by hostess dues. Martha seemed a lile annoyed that Jesus did not noce that she was doing all the work. Jesus gently reminds her that while serving is important, to let it get in the way of learning from Him is not wise. He en- courages her to calm down and listen to his teaching. It is sll easy for us to get distracted by business and serving and forget to connue to learn to be disciples. When we commune together we are affirming the pri- ority of being a disciple and sit at the feet of Jesus to learn from him. “Clean Inside and Out” (Luke 11:37-54) While Jesus was at a meal at the house of a Pharisee, they noced that he did not parcipate in the ceremonial washing before he ate and promptly cricized him for the omission. What follows is some of the strongest words Jesus had for the Pharisees and lawyers. He said that they were doomed unless they cleansed their hearts as well as their hands. The Lord’s Supper is a reminder to us that we must look to the inner person as well as conduct ourselves as Chrisans in the world. We seek to be cleansed inside and out.

CHURCH OF CHRIST

Three Meals with Jesus

(Luke 9:10-19; 10:38-42; 11:37-54)

This morning our lesson is in three parts and will lead us toward the Lord’s Supper. It is important to

remember that the morsel of cracker (bread) and the sip of grape juice are the remnants of what was a full

and meaningful meal when Jesus ate the “Last Supper” with his disciples. Over the centuries (indeed very

early on) it has been reduced to what we have today. It need not be less meaningful.

Over the course of this year we have been focusing on the Lord’s Supper in order to deepen and

broaden our understanding of what we are doing when we commune together on Sunday mornings (or any

other time, for that matter). It is not just the Last Supper that Jesus shared meals with his disciples and oth-

ers. I believe that by looking at the meals Jesus shared in Luke we can better understand all of the things that

our communion together means.

“You Give Them Something to Eat” (Luke 9:10-19)

This is the feeding of the 5,000. The disciples are away from any convenient food source and the peo-

ple are tired and hungry. The disciples want to send them away, but Jesus has other ideas. He challenges

them to give the people something to eat. Of course, that is impossible. There are only five loaves and a cou-

ple of fish. Even with these meager resources, Jesus insists that everyone sit down as he blessed the food.

We are challenged to do the same thing – we do not turn people away who are seeking. We are often pushed

because of limited resources (not just money), but we have faith that God will provide. When we break bread

together we affirm that we believe that Christ will provide what we need to do what he has asked.

“Choosing the Better Part” (Luke 10:38-42)

While Jesus was visiting in the home of his friends Mary and Martha, the sisters were torn as to how

to treat their guest. Mary sat and listened as Jesus taught while Martha scurried about distracted by hostess

duties. Martha seemed a little annoyed that Jesus did not notice that she was doing all the work. Jesus gently

reminds her that while serving is important, to let it get in the way of learning from Him is not wise. He en-

courages her to calm down and listen to his teaching. It is still easy for us to get distracted by business and

serving and forget to continue to learn to be disciples. When we commune together we are affirming the pri-

ority of being a disciple and sit at the feet of Jesus to learn from him.

“Clean Inside and Out” (Luke 11:37-54)

While Jesus was at a meal at the house of a Pharisee, they noticed that he did not participate in the

ceremonial washing before he ate and promptly criticized him for the omission. What follows is some of the

strongest words Jesus had for the Pharisees and lawyers. He said that they were doomed unless they

cleansed their hearts as well as their hands. The Lord’s Supper is a reminder to us that we must look to the

inner person as well as conduct ourselves as Christians in the world. We seek to be cleansed inside and out.

*Communion—We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord every Sunday (“first day of the week”) through a time of communion known as the Lord’s Supper. The “unleavened bread” represents His body and the “fruit of the vine” (cup of grape juice) represents His blood shed on the cross. As our guest, you are welcome to

participate, though you are not required to do so. *Giving– We are challenged to be good stewards of God’s blessings by supporting the various ministries of the church through a weekly collection that is taken during our worship time. You are welcome to give, but

please do not feel as though you must.

EDUCATION NEWS

Our spring teaching quarter ended with the end of June. A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who taught for the last three months. Teaching God’s Word is an essential and serious endeavor (James 3:1).

One cannot overstate the importance of Bible study. We offer classes for every age. Let’s make a com-mitment to become involved in weekly Bible Study this quarter. Below are the class offerings and teachers be-ginning in July: Sunday Wednesday Youth Classes: Youth Classes: Nursery - Sarah Scott Nursery - Sarah Scott Preschool - Karen Langston Preschool - Cindy Stubblefield K-2 – Danielle Almon K-2 – Angela Shoulders 3-5 – Kenneth Ashby/Eric Seasongood 3-5 – Ronny Stubblefield 6-12 – Casey Nash 6-12 – Casey Nash Adult Classes: Adult Classes: Auditorium – Quincy Stevenson Auditorium – Summer Series Young Adult Class – Ronny Stubblefield

GET TO KNOW CASEY AND KERI… Casey and Keri have now been with us over a month. During this time we have had a VBS and other summer

activities. They are leaving Sunday, taking a group of our youth to Horizons at Freed Hardeman University for

the week. When they return, we will have a sign up list to “get to know Casey and Keri.” Once a week, for ap-

proximately 5 weeks (excluding camp week) we would like for one of our families to have Casey and Keri over

for a meal and get better acquainted. Look for a sign up list on the bulletin board. Also, we haven’t had a

“pounding” for them yet. Now that they have moved into a house, we want to “pound” them with basic house-

hold products or whatever you would like to give. We will present our “pounding” on Sunday morning, the 26th.
