Church in Wales This popular course has withstood the passing of time, perhaps not as long as Christianity has been around but some years at least. The course is based on eighteen modules but the course leader may use the course in a different sequence or even use the parts needed leaving out sections that do not fit in with the overall plan. Some sections could be taken in conjunction with others thereby shortening the course. This updated printing has introduced colour and an improved lay-out, however Publications would be very pleased to receive opinions and suggestions for further improvements. It should be understood that the literature referred to, i.e the Catechism, and the Alternative Eucharist are available from Church in Wales Publications. Bibles are available from all good bookshops, in the shops run by the SPCK (Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge), and from the St. Asaph Resource Centre, Wrexham. There are SPCK shops in Cardiff and Chester, and they will accept mailorders. The Bible version preferred is the NRSV as most of the modern services use material from this version but depending on parish usage other versions may be used. Modules 17 and 18 should be used mainly with adult instruction as they highlight the Ten Commandments and vocations. The course leader may photocopy the sheets as needed without seeking permission from Church in Wales Publications. © Church in Wales Publications 2002 No part of this course may be stored in a retrieval system or transmitted in any form, using computers or other electronic equipment. Church in Wales

The Church requires that people tobe confirmed have been baptised, and are sufficiently instructed in theChristian faith, are penitent for theirsins, and are ready to confessJesus Christ as Saviour and to obeyhim as Lord.

Let us look at theserequirements for a moment: 1. As well as your name, addressand date of birth, if you have beenbaptised, your priest or instructorwill need to know the date andplace. You may have a baptismcertificate, but if not you or yourparents should write to the Churchwhere you were baptised for areplacement certificate.

2. The purpose of confirmationpreparation is to make sure you aresufficiently instructed in theChristian Faith This is not hardwork, but a unique and excitingopportunity to learn about theChristian faith and to ask all thequestions you want. You shouldattend ALL the sessions; but if thereis a reason (e.g. sickness) why youare unable to go, you should tellyour course leader.

3. A priest can baptise you andinstruct you in the Christian Faith, but only you can be penitent foryour sins, ready to confess JesusChrist as Saviour and obey him asLord. Do not think that if you simplyattend meetings, confirmation isautomatic at the end. If you areuncertain whether or not youbelieve in Jesus Christ, then thehonest thing to do would be to putoff confirmation until a time whenyou are more sure. No one will thinkany the less of you if you decidethis.

What About the Work Sheets? In preparation for each session there will be asheet to complete. Give yourself enough time todo this. Begin by being quiet and asking for God’shelp, using a prayer of your own. Bring thecompleted sheet with you, and then everyone cantalk about their answers. The work isn’t like schoolhomework - you won’t get a mark, but it will helpyou understand more about the Christian Faith. Atthe end of the course, you can keep all your

sheets together as a recordof all that you have learned.

To complete eachsheet you will need:

• A pen or pencil• A Bible• A copy of the Catechism

Available from Church in Wales Publications ( tel 029 2034 8259) - £3.50 incl PP)

You will also need to know how to look up a versein the Bible.

HOW TO LOOK UP A VERSE IN THE BIBLEThe Bible is divided into two parts: the OldTestament and the New Testament. There are 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 inthe New Testament. Some Bibles also include asection called the Apocrypha which comes betweenthe Old and New Testaments.Decide first whether the text you are looking for is inthe Old Testament, the Apocrypha or the NewTestament, find the page number on which therelevant book starts, and find that page.Look through the book for the chapter wanted andthen find the right verse. They are all numbered e.gGenesis 1: 2-4 means the book of Genesis chapter1, verses 2 to 4. (Genesis is the first book of theBible). Remember that some books have a numberbefore the title (i.e 1Kings or 2Corinthians), thissimply means that the book of Kings comes in twoparts and that St Paul wrote two letters to theCorinthians. The modern bibles also have an index in the frontwhere you will be able to find the starting page ofany book. Computer bibles work similarly.

What does the word ‘Pentecost’ mean?

It is a Greek word meaning ‘the 50th Day’ and isalso the Greek name given to the Feast of Weeks. So called of course because the Holy Spirit cameupon the Apostles and people as described in theBible, on the 50th day after the Passover.See Acts 2:1 - As the Holy Spirit descended thisday, the name was applied by the Church to thefeast celebrating it and popularly calledWhitSunday. In much earlier times (c.300-400AD) the wordPentecost was also used for the whole periodbetween Easter and Whitsunday, i.e Easter time.

The Feast of Weeks was (is) a celebration of thecompletion of the grain harvest. It was held on the50th day after the offering of a barley sheaf at theFeast of Unleavened Bread (usually late spring, early summer) - hence Pentecost. This Jewish feast was later regarded ascommemorating the Giving of the Law to Moseson Mount Sinai.

Interesting to follow the meaning of words - andsometimes we find that at other times they meantsomething different!

Background Information

Jesus was born before the death of the Kingnamed Herod the Great (4.B.C) but not more thana few years before. The history books do not have much informationabout the person of Jesus. The main ones are a history written by a Romanhistorian named Tacitus and a Jewish writernamed Josephus. Both comprise no more than a few lines but wemust not think that Jesus was not an importantperson because of the few bits of information. The Roman Empire knew many problems and itmay well be that the revolts in the Holy Landwere not all that important compared with others.

Jesus’ story is a story of a struggle as old ashumanity. But much more than that, a struggle tomake humanity understand the implications of sinand a new start.A new beginning for all through the death of aninnocent person who literally took upon Himselfthe sins of humanity. We have been given a chance to make adifference, a difference to the world. We may not have to die on a cross but Christiansare to be a witness to one of the great events, ifnot the greatest, this world has known.

Yes Lord,Yes Lord,I believe!I believe!

The CREEDSYou can find the Apostles’ Creed at the start of SectionII of Christian Belief - page 3 of the Catechism. From the beginning of the Church, Christians have usedcreeds to list the main things they believe. TheApostles’ Creed is probably the oldest one we have, and though it was not actually written by the apostlesthemselves, it includes all the most important thingsthey taught. This creed is said in Morning and EveningPrayer (Matins and Evensong) and the Nicene Creed(which we shall study later and which comes next in theCatechism) and is used in the Holy Eucharist). You should try to learn the Apostles’ Creed by heart.

The Holy TrinityThe chief thing we learn from the Creeds is theDoctrine of the Holy Trinity. The word Trinity is madeup of two shorter words: tri (which means three) andunity. It means that we believe in one God who is inthree Persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. If you look at the Catechism you will see that theApostles’Creed is in three sections. In each we begin by sayingthat we believe in one of the three persons of the Holy Trinity, and then list some of the things we believe:I believe in God, the Father And in Jesus Christ I believe in the Holy SpiritAs Christians we believe in all three persons of the Trinity; andyet we believe they are only one God. Do not worry if you findthis difficult to understand.No-one has fully understood it. It is just the best way the Churchhas found of expressing what Jesus taught about God.

Look up the following verses in the Biblewhich tell us about the Holy Trinity and fill inthe missing words:

Hear 0 Israel, the Lord our God is ............... Lord Mark 12:29

I and the Father are ........... John 10:30

Now the Lord is ........... 2 Corinthians 3:17

Apostles’ Creed - A statement of faithonly used in the Western Church. It falls into three sections - concernedwith God, Jesus Christ and the HolySpirit. By the early Middle Ages theApostles’ Creed was widely employedat baptisms and during the early 9thcentury found its place in the dailyoffice. Creeds are used as a bindingformulary of faith. In churches where Evening Prayer isstill used, this Creed is said (BCP 1984)

The word ‘Bible’ is derived from theGreek word ‘biblia’ which means

books.Indeed the Bible is a collection of

books or writings usually known asScriptures.

Encompassing the Old Testament,New Testament and sometimes the

Apocrypha ( a small collection ofwritings received by the early

Church as part of the Greek versionof the Old Testament but not

included in the Hebrew Bible). (Apocrypha = Hidden)

The Old Testament describesoccurrences as far back as

c.1200BC and depicts the struggleof the Hebrews (Jewish people of

ancient times) to come to terms withthe idea of a single God, this is

known as ‘monotheism’. The NewTestament describes the life (in

part) of the Messiah - Jesus Christ, and the early days after the

Crucifixion .Also important are the writings of St

Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles.(Gentiles - people of non-Jewish

origin, usually meant the Greek world).

The Christian life is a growing friendship withJesus Christ. For a friendship to grow, the friendsmust speak to each other. We can speak toJesus in prayer. He can speak to us throughprayer, through other people and through hisWord, the Bible. Every Christian should set asideat least a few minutes every day for prayer, and toread a short portion of the Bible.

The Bible, containing the Old and the NewTestaments, is really a library of books giving us arecord of the relationship between God andmankind over hundreds of years. The Old Testament contains a large part of thehistory of the race, nation or people from whichJesus came. The very earliest history of these people is notknown, so the writer of some of the books in theOld Testament tried to explain the things thatpuzzled them. For example, they were certain thatGod had created the world, but they did not knowhow this had come about, and so we have thestory of the creation as they thought it hadhappened in the book of Genesis. After the time of Abraham, the story of God’schosen people becomes more of an historicalaccount. The Lord’s PrayerThe Lord’s PrayerPeople of the Old Testament prayed. Jesus foundit necessary to pray. You almost certainly knowthe prayer he taught his disciples. Look for it inMatthew 6:9-13. It is also in paragraph 39 of theCatechism. You ought to know it off by heart.

Three ways of PrayingThree ways of Praying1. Personal (Private) PrayerIt has been said, “They pray together best whofirst have prayed alone” Personal prayer amountsto prayers in the morning, thanking God for apeaceful night, and at other times of the day, suchas the evening. It is something between you andGod. You can also pray privately, quickly at anytime of the day and in any place; such as whenwaiting in a queue, sitting in a waiting room(without getting on your knees). Pray for thepeople around you (much better than gettingimpatient). Also you can use Arrow Prayers:“Please God, help!.” or “Father I’m sad, help meto cheer upl” These prayers work!Write down a few examples of Arrow Prayers thatyou could use. Make them simple and to thepoint.

2. Group PrayerJesus said, “Where two or three are gatheredtogether in my name, there I am in the midst ofthem.” More Christians these days are finding thevalue of praying in small groups - house groups. To the group they bring their needs, thanksgivings, fears, joys. The small group is alsoa place where problems (or joys or sorrows) of lifecan be discussed against the background ofprayer.

3. Public PrayerThis is with the Church gathered together forworship - the Holy Eucharist, or Morning orEvening Prayer. It is vital that the Church praystogether in public worship. See Hebrews 10:24-25 and Acts 2:42.Copy out one of these verses and discuss later.

1. ADORATIONWe adore God. We love him greatly because he is God and onlyhe is worthy of praise.Thumbs up! He is great

2. CONFESSIONLord, I am sorry. We feel awkward in God’s sight because of thewrong thing we have done and the good things we failed to do because oflaziness or shyness. The next finger is the one most difficult to control., like ourselves. It reminds us of our weakness.

3. THANKSGIVINGWe say thank you to God for what he has done for us in creation,in keeping us and all things, and for all the blessings of life. Our forefinger points to God, the giver of all good things.

4. SUPPLICATIONWe ask for ourselves last of all.Our little finger reminds us of our littleness, not of our greatimportance. May our requests be simple.

5. INTERCESSIONWe ask God’s help for others. This takes up quite a lot of time inprayer. The middle finger is the biggest finger and reminds us of the hardwork of intercession.

The PromisesWhen you were baptised yourparents and godparents madepromises for you. In confirmationyou will make these promises foryourself. When a soldier joinsthe army he has to makepromises of faithfulness to theQueen and to his officers. Theconfirmation promises are offaithfulness to Jesus. If a soldierbreaks his promises he is inserious trouble. It is even moreserious to break promises toGod. You should not make thepromises of confirmation unlessyou fully intend to be an activecommunicant Christian.

One difference between children andadults is that children do not makeimportant decisions - where they live, when to get up or go to bed. They aremade for them by their parents or whoeverlooks after them. Adults decide things likethese for themselves. We call the timebetween being a child and being an adultadolescence. During these years we beginto make important decisions for ourselves.

One decision you should make for yourself is tobe confirmed. It is a big decision, and it isimportant to understand the promises you willmake and what is involved. It is wrong to beconfirmed because your parents want it orbecause your friends are being confirmed. It is nottheir decision, it is yours.

Here are the questions you will be asked by theBishop:

Do you turn to Christ? I turn to Christ.

Do you repent of I repent of my sins.your sins?

Do you reject evil? I reject evil.

Do you believe and I believe and trusttrust in God who made in him.you and all life?

Do you believe and I believe and trust trust in his Son in himJesus Christ who redeemed you and all mankind?

Do you believe I believe and trust and trust in his in him.Holy Spirit who gives life to you and all the people of God?

Confirmation means deciding tofollow Jesus Christ. In Luke 14:28-30 Jesus tells aparable to those who are making uptheir minds whether to follow him. What lesson do you think thisparable should teach us?

Here are some questions to see how wellyou understand these promises:

What does it mean when we say that weturn to Christ?.........................................................................................................................................................................................................

What does repent mean?......................................................................................................................................

What is the difference between believingand trusting?......................................................................................................................................

Once you have made your promises the Churchaccepts you into full communicant status. Thismeans you are welcome to receive HolyCommunion. The Bishop confirms you to showthat the Church into which you have beenwelcomed is not just the local Church, but thewhole Church of Christ throughout the world, ofwhich he is the representative. You will be confirmed one or two at a time. Youwill come forward and kneel before the Bishopwho will lay his hands on your head as he says:Confirm, Lord, your servant (name) with yourheavenly grace, that he/she may continueyours for ever, and daily increase in your HolySpirit more and more until he/she comes toyour everlasting kingdom.

What is achieved by the sacrament of the HolyEucharist is that we are able to meet with Jesus in avery special way and are able to share in his life - thenew life he promised to all who follow him. Before we receive the Sacrament, it is only right that we prepareourselves for this special meeting with our Lord. Part of thispreparation is done in silence before the service begins.Yourpriest or instructor will give you some help on how best to usethis time. Within the service we prepare ourselves by confessingour sins, receiving God’s forgiveness and by hearing God’sWord. However, paragraph 55 of the Catechism tells us that part of ourpreparation starts before we set foot in Church, by making surethat we are ‘In love and charity with all people!’ When we cometo Communion we must not only be at peace with God, but also,as far as possible, at peace with other people. The Catechismfollows the teaching of Jesus. Look up Matthew 5:23-24 and fillin the gaps below. The wine is poured into a CHALICE, and there is amatching plate on which thebread is placed, known as aPATEN. When there are a lot ofpeople to receive HolyCommunion, we use a kind ofcup with a lid for the bread, whichlooks a bit like a chalice. This iscalled a CIBORIUM.

Some priests wear specialgarments, or vestments for theEucharist. They first put on awhite tunic style gown called anALB. What does a prophet do, at whichuniversity do they study? The prophet Amos was a farmer and shepherd, andothers were not much higher on the social ladder.Yet all played a large role within Israel and advised(even told off!) kings. The story of King David and the prophet Nathan issuch a tale - 2 Samuel 11 and 12.

Could such a thing happen today, we may well ask.One thing is clear - Prophets do not necessarily havedegrees in Science or even Performing Arts but they dospeak as God commands them to do.

Do you recognise prophets today?

The first thing to rememberabout them is that they are

not man-made.

Now read EXODUS 19:16 to20:21, then fill in the gaps in

the sentence below:

The TEN COMMANDMENTSwere delivered by .................to .............. on Mount ...........

They are the instructions or rulesthat God gave to his people. Indoing any worthwhile job in ordinarylife it is important to follow rules andinstructions. In the spiritual life it is even moreimportant. God did not make thesecommandments for his own good, but for the good of his people.

Your main task this week is to learnthe Ten Commandments by heart. You can find them in paragraph 28of the Catechism.

Look up Matthew 22:37-40 and youcan read Jesus’ summary.

Try to find out what our duties to God are andwhich are our duties to our neighbour.

Who do YOU think your neighbour actually is?Please feel free to discuss.

When we have seen something we think is great -a good film or television programme - we like totell our friends; call them so that they can enjoy ittoo. So with faith, when we have learned to loveJesus, we cannot keep this to ourselves but mustshare it with others. In a court of law, a witness iscalled upon to say what happened, to tell thetruth. Read what Jesus told his disciples in Luke24:44-48 and discuss. The body of believersgrew and people around them soon took note ofthem. We too are called to bear witness to Christ, both by our words and by our lives. This is notalways easy.

If we witness something wrong, how will we dealwith that? If we see a friend of ours doing wrong,a parent, a brother or sister?Perhaps the persons we witness doing somethingwrong, do not much care about our opinions?Care less about our faith?Read the following letter sent to an Agony Aunt ofa popular magazine and comment on yourfeelings and opinions:

I’ve been a Christian for six months, but the others inmy class just don’t understand. Whenever they use badlanguage or steal things from school I tell them howwicked they are, but they don’t take any notice. When Itell them they are miserable sinners and that they willgo to hell they just laugh, and when I write Bible verseson the board during break the teacher rubs them offwhich makes me annoyed. I read my Bible and praymost days and I am generally quite a good Christian, but they are all too stupid to see. Isn’t there anythingelse I could do to make them understand?Sylvia.

The word is taken from the Latinword ‘voco’ meaning I call, so whenwe speak of vocation we arethinking of how God calls us. Godhas a purpose for us - for YOU.Some are called to do spectacularthings which attract publicity in theworld. Most of us are called to servein ordinary things. What are you going to do when youleave school? That question is oftenasked. It is something whichinvolves God very much, and yourrelationship with him. For theChristian the question is What doesGod want me to do? But how can Ifind that out?

1) BY PRAYERMention it in your prayers. Askfriends to pray for you. What aboutgoing on retreat or on a pilgrimage?God will let you know as he thinks you are ready, one step at a time.

2) BY FINDING OUT WHAT GIFTSYOU HAVEDon’t be shy. Whatever you haveGod has given you, so you are notshowing off. So try and fit the giftsto available jobs.

3) BY LISTENING TO OTHERSIt’s surprising how often God usesother people to advise you on whatyou should do. You don’t alwaysneed to take their advice, but dolisten. Test it and weigh it up foryourself. What if you get two conflictingpieces of advice? Pray and ask forGod’s help to make the rightdecision. If you don’t get a job, oryou lose your job, ask how you canserve God in what you do. Howdoes this fit in with vocation? Westill have a responsibility to use ourtime and talents as best we can forGod.

Some are called to theordained ministry. It is clearthat God needs people whocan give all their time to hismission. You don’t usuallyhear it suggested at CareersEvenings in schools, butpeople are called in this wayand we must support themwith our prayers. To find out

about the work of the ordained ministry, look inthe Catechism, paragraphs 22-24, and thencomplete the following:

The Ministry of a Bishop is: ...................................

The Ministry of a Priest is: .....................................

The Ministry of a Deacon is: ..................................

Together with all the other possibilities, you oughtto give consideration whether God is calling you inthis way, so what do you think you can be?

1) Speak to your parish priest. He will know youwell, and he will pray for you as you continue inyour prayers.

2) When the time is right, he will arrange for youto see the Warden of Ordinands, and the Bishop.

3) Later, you will be invited to a selectionconference, where the Church tests thegenuineness of your call.

4) If you are accepted and still feel the same way, arrangements will be made for your training.
