WELCOME To all of our new members and visitors we welcome you and pray you will find Love Hope and Faith as you spend time here at HTK. We believe that God created all people for friendship with him and being made in his image we express the same creativity and love that he does (although not quiet as huge obviously). For those of us here at HTK our frailties and struggles only provide further room for Gods strength and love. Please don’t hesitate to contact me on 0419287414 or [email protected] if you would like meet with me personally. I pray that the peace which God has given so abundantly to me and my family would rest upon you all. God Bless, Stuart, Senior Minister HTK HTK Vision for 2015

In 2014 the HTK family felt lead to ‘sit at the feet of Jesus’ and learn. Consequently we grew the number of small groups and the number involved in active bible studies. Lecture series were conducted throughout the year on ‘The Holy Spirit’, ’How to read the Bible’ and the ’1st century Church’. We also saw the development through Lakeside Publishing of two new studies and a devotional series the ‘HTK 28 day challenge’. Team nights were also held Thursday evening to offer discipleship to our 10am music and creative teams. A number of preaching series were also conducted on Sundays to encourage our members to intentional discipleship. So where to in 2015? What has God been saying to the leadership of the church, and where is He leading us as a people? The theme which we feel lead by God to guide us this year will be… ‘The year of Evangelism -go the extra mile’ We read in Matthew 28:16-20 that God has given to us the privilege of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with the world in which we live. We are to teach and make disciples of all who receive our message, and baptise them into Jesus Death and resurrection. This is only possible when we understand we are a team. It requires the whole body ‘The Church’ to achieve this mission. Sadly within the Anglican tradition we have tended to see this role as belonging to the Priest. Maybe this is why Anglican churches around the country are closing their doors. We have become private about our beliefs, often fearful of rejection or cowered into silence by our societies prevailing cynicism towards faith. This cannot continue if Christianity is to have a future in this country. In 2015 we are going to equip the church to rise above their fears, to find their courage, and gain the tools needed to confidently live their faith publicly. One of the tools which we intend to equip the saints with is ‘to go the extra mile’ . In Matthew 5:41 Jesus uses the Roman law requiring civilians to carry a soldiers pack (30kg) when asked. He does this to teach his followers the call of a servant heart. We are to always go the extra mile, go above and beyond in serving others. Whether it’s in our work place, our home, our friends and even strangers we are to demonstrate the love of God through action. This then becomes the point of evangelism, the point at which people see our care and concern for them. When we seek to love people in action, God will provide opportunities for us to share our life and faith with them. In 2015 I hope you will join me in praying for HTK and our ministry to our world. Pray that our God of Abundance will guide and strengthen us. Pray that God will meet our financial needs, grow our faith and add to our number. Pray that it will be our hearts desire to make Jesus known to a lost and hurting world. Stuart

Angels Fr Robert Chippendale is leading a series of talks on angels.

These are held at HTK on Tuesday mornings from 9am (sharp) to 10am.

Guardian Angel By Dee Lister

Angel so bright,

Over me leaning, Held in the light

Of heavens above. Visions so holy

Cover me slowly, Filling, distilling

The Essence of love.

Now under the moon You can still hear the tune

Of choirs celestial That wait for the noon, When bright as the sun

Your glory will come And heaven will open

And your work will be done.

Safely I hide Here in your presence

Knowing my Guide Is holding my hand.

Love me forever Through all endeavour,

Peacefully, tenderly You understand.

PANCAKE’S GALORE

Pancake Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday (in French, “Mardi Gras”) all refer in some way to the practice of eating up the day before the commencement of repentance, fasting and obligations associated with Lent, which started the next day, Ash Wednesday. The description, Shrove Tuesday, come from the word “shrive” meaning to absolve. Pancakes became the way to use up some of the more rich foods such as eggs, milk and sugar before a time of fasting and eating simpler foods. The time of fasting and self-denial in Lent is a reminder of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting and prayer in the wilderness following His baptism., and prepare us for holy week and Easter. At HTK, Shrove Tuesday activities were organised by Prime Time and the Youth Group. Pancakes aplenty and every imaginable topping provided the sustenance for a group of more than 50 parishioners ranging in age from one to well into the 80s. Father Stuart spoke to the group about Shrove Tuesday and Lent. Games for all ages involving pancakes were then organised by Scott. For the younger ones, relay races flipping pancakes and sword fighting while holding pancakes set the scene. For all ages, the pancake eating competition was the hit. This involved eating a pancake on a plate with your hands firmly behind your back. The older members were happy to join in this game too. Thank you to the Prime Time committee and Scott for the organisation of the afternoon food and activities.

PRIME TIME TRIP TO MARY CAIRNCROSS PARK

WEDNESDAY 18 MARCH

Leaving HTK by car at 11.15am Enjoy a short easy walk in the rainforest (the track is wheel-chair and walker friendly) Bring your own lunch or take advantage of the cafe Mary Cairncross Park, near Maleny,

comprises 55 hectares of sub-tropical rainforest overlooking the Glass House Mountains. There are BBQs and toilets and some tables. Sign-up sheet at the back of the church. Please indicate if you need transport or if you can provide transport.

Arts and Crafts Allan Taylor We must wonder from time to time what the children get up to when they leave the main congregation at our 10am service and disappear to their period away from us in their Sunday school. I for one certainly did, so I dropped in briefly earlier this month to see for myself. Michele and a bevy of mums and helpers were, after a brief moment of prayer, keeping the children busily involved in their project of the day, learning and then applying themselves to some craft work related to what they had been learning. Some glimpses of this and the later presentation and

explanation of their results to Fr. Stuart and the

congregation are pictured here.

CAN YOU HELP WITH THE MAGAZINE?

Our parish magazine provides an important role in communication within our parish and

to our community as well. It forms an important part of our outreach at HTK.

Would you like to help to spread the load in producing this monthly publication? There are opportunities to contribute to its production. Could you:

Write articles or take photos at events

Design the cover in conjunction with Fr Stuart

Produce the centre pages with the calendar, readings, birthdays etc

Do some desk-top publishing when Dianne is not available

Do the printing and stapling .

If you think you have the skills, or are keen to learn the skills, including use of

Microsoft Publisher, please see the editor, Dianne Henderson, email her [email protected] or call her on 0418 879 582

PARISH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Parish held its Annual General Meeting on 22 February. The full document of reports, financial statement and budget for 2015 is available from the parish office. We will not reproduce this in the magazine. Some highlights:

We have seen significant growth in both Sunday congregations More bible studies have commenced Children’s ministry and Sunday School have increased Sarah Windred has been appointed Children’s Minister Lakeside Publishing has reached out within and beyond the parish to increase our knowledge and faith Pastoral Care to those in need is provided by a wide variety of parishioners, including retired clergy and Fr Stuart

for those in hospital. Youth and Young Adults ministry is growing. A communication between HTK and the University of the Sunshine

Coast has developed through the provision of food to needy students. This is a spin-off from relationships developed at the Farmer’s Market between David and Rae Reid and Shambhala Farm who now donate produce for us to distribute.

Youth Church for Grade 6 to 9 has commenced on a Sunday morning. Prime Time ministry to over 55s is also a growing ministry. Financially HTK spent more than it earned in 2014, costs reflecting a focus on growth in the parish. The budget for 2015 also reflects a focus on growth. Dana Paxton has agreed to act in a community liaison role for the parish. The election and appointment of positions in the parish resulted in:

Wardens – Andrew McVittie, Janet Dyke and Don Henderson Parish Councillors: Terry Strath, Flo Johnson, Bridie Evett, David Reid, Mike Jessop, Dana Paxton, David

Mitchell, Allie Roser With 3 new parish councillors there are now 4 men and 4 women and a broader age range, making it more representative of our congregation.

Congratulations to Dana, Allie and David becoming Parish Councillors at HTK for the first time. They all have great gifts to share with the parish and we look forward to their input.

During the sermon at the 10am service, grades 6 to 9 spend their time with Scott in the ”Youth Shed” having teaching designed for their age group. It is planned to upgrade the amenities in the shed, including insulation and lighting.

HEY YOUTHIES Going the extra mile. That is what we are talking about this year. The idea that in everything we do we will do it well, and we will do it to the best of our ability. Whether that is loving people at school, at home, at sport or at church we are going to set a trend that says ‘people are important’. At youth group this year we want to encourage you guys to go the extra mile, and we want to go the extra mile for you. So at HTK Youth Group these are our values. This is what we are about: TO KNOW GOD AND TO MAKE GOD KNOWN RESPECT COMMUNITY FUN GOING THE EXTRA MILE KNOWING GOD We believe that there is nothing more important than you knowing God. God made you, loves you, and wants a relationship with you. If that is the only thing you ever learn at youth group we will be very well satisfied. But we don’t just want you guys to know God, but we want everyone to know God. So we will be encouraging you to make God known. RESPECT People matter , you matter , we matter . So at youth group we are going to respect ourselves, others and the environment that we are spending time in. What does this look like? This looks like being fully engaged when you’re at youth group, being quick to listen to Scott and I and expecting that we will be quick to listen to you. We are so blessed to have the hall, the youth shed (soon to be renovated!!), and the grassed areas to run around in! But it is also our responsibility to look after those areas, making sure we put our rubbish in the bin and always leaving those spaces in a better state than we found them. COMMUNITY Maybe the easiest way to explain what a community looks like is that we are a family. We look out for each other, we celebrate each other’s successes, and we build each other up with kind words. Youth group should feel like a safe and encouraging environment for you to come and be YOU, and where others should feel welcome and comfortable to come and be themselves. FUN!! We think having fun is super impor tant. So we want you to look forward to coming to youth group on Fridays, and we want you to expect to have fun! If you have great ideas about activities we can do at youth, send us a message and let us know! We love hanging out with you guys and are so excited for the year ahead as we learn together what is looks like to ‘go the extra mile’! God Bless, Sarah & Scott

BOOK LAUNCH – TELL IT LIKE IT IS

Have you ever thought about sharing your faith in you friend, Jesus, who is the Lord of Life and Saviour of the World but not known how to get started? If so, this new study book by Janet Dyke, published through Lakeside Publishing, may be a help. It is designed for use in small groups to help Christians of all ages to share their faith by trusting God and sharing their story. The book will be launched on Friday 10 April at 6.30pm at the Cafe by the Lake. Hope you can come!

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

This year the World Day of Prayer is being held on Friday 6 March at the Kawana Life Baptist Church

(just at the end of the Lake) at 9am.

This year the service has been prepared by the women of the Bahamas

This annual service of prayer and praise is an ecumenical and world wide event.

People all round the world use the same service,

the same prayers in their own language. It is truly coming together as Christ's body

in witness to the world.

The theme this year is from the familiar Easter story of Jesus washing the disciples' feet.

Look carefully at the bottom of the beautiful picture

which had the flamingos bowing at the feet of Jesus.

INVITATION FROM THE CRAFT GROUP Every Thursday afternoon you’ll find a group of happy and craft-loving ladies gathered at

the church to learn new skills and enjoy great fellowship (and afternoon tea. This month,

we’d love to invite you at come along on 26 March at 1pm when we’ll be making palm crosses for use in this church on Palm Sunday (29th). All skill levels welcome as instruction

will be provided. Also afternoon tea. Think of the satisfaction of seeing the crosses blessed and used in the Liturgy of Palms in the church service and knowing that you were

part of making it possible!

CRAFT GROUP Every Thursday 1pm - 4pm a happy group of ladies meet at the parish hall for craft and fellowship. Everyone

welcome. Bring a friend. Cost just $2 and includes afternoon tea and use of all equipment. Mostly we do

paper crafts but if you prefer to chat and knit as some do, please bring your work and join in. If you are a keen card maker or if you're a beginner you will have great fun with a super group of ladies from inside and

outside the parish. An easy way to invite and involve a friend perhaps? For further information contact Janet Dyke 0414 704 512

MARCH READINGS

Our Parish Prayer Renew in us, O God, the zeal of your love. Let our Parish come alive with the power of your Spirit. Where we have failed, forgive us. Where we have persevered, encourage us. Where we are in doubt, direct us. Help us to see new opportunities for witness & service for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord & Saviour. Amen. Prayer of Evangelism Heavenly Father, set our hearts on fire to go into the world in your name. Grant us wisdom, and the confidence to speak your word. Give us the strength & the will to continue through all circumstances. Help us take the good news to all who will listen, so that they may know Jesus as their Lord & Master. May we glorify your name in all we say and do. In Jesus name we pray. Amen Prayer—Youth & Children Lord, guide us as we minister to young people in this place. Send families & children to us that we can share with them your love for your children, that they may grow in love for you. We offer over to you our Kids’ Club & children’s church, the leaders & all those who attend. We ask your continued blessing upon our Youth and Junior Youth. Help us as we seek to nurture their faith, answer their questions, & above all, lead them into a deeper relationship with you. Amen. Pastoral Focus Prayer God our Father, grant us the skills to serve your church; the ears to hear the calls for help; the lips to speak your words of truth; the eyes to see the needs to fill; the feet to go to those in want; the mind to meet the doubts we find; the heart of love to share your peace; the hands to work without reward; we ask this only to do your will, through Jesus, our Redeemer & friend. Amen.

Jennifer is an inspiration Jennifer Hughes-Bystrom is spending a few weeks with us at HTK, and we expect to see her back for a month or so each year. Jennifer told part of her story to both services on February 8th. She operates an orphanage in Molo, Kenya and comes back to Australia each year on holidays. Her mission at the Springs of Hope Foundation is to care for the Rift Valley regions growing number of orphaned and abandoned babies and children by providing the best opportunity to grow up and thrive in a loving Christian family environment. Many of the children are innocent victims of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In a loving family home setting, the children learn to trust and attach to adults and the siblings in their family, thus growing up to feel the power of unconditional love. Jennifer first went to Kenya in 2008, just after the horrific ethnic clashes, and volunteered at a large Australian –run orphanage. It had a large budget and a large staff and Jennifer felt called to move to a location where the need for her services was greater. In 2009 she went to a new orphanage in Maralal in the Samburu region to help it get established as it was struggling with no electricity, running water or decent cooking facilities. Jennifer helped to raise money to get electricity connected, dig a bore hole and install tanks, build a proper kitchen and funds to pay for the monthly needs of the orphanage. In 2012, a large US church connected with the Maralal orphanage and took on all its financial needs.

This left Jennifer free to start up another orphanage in Molo. Molo was one of the worst hit areas in the 2008 strife and had the largest refugee camp. There are only two orphanages in Molo and the need is much greater. Currently she operates in half of a house, and can only accommodate twelve children. The girls sleep in the loft, the boys in the kitchen, the babies in the bedroom and Jennifer in the storeroom. She employs a full-time social worker and has house mothers to provide care for the children. The tenant who occupied the other half of the house has just left, and Jennifer is keen to rent that space as well, allowing her to double her number of children. The children come to her through Kenya’s Children’s Services department with whom she has a good relationship. Jennifer is looking for additional land and needs further funds to do that. Her goal is to also build a school as she sees education as the key to solving many of the social and poverty problems in her area. A number of our congregation have enquired about assisting Jennifer financially. There is information on the table at the back of the church. More information can be seen on her website : springsofhopefoundation.org

CAN YOU HELP? A widow, a hard working member of our parish, needs a place to live.

She needs to find new accommodation within the next 4 weeks. Do you have a spare room in your house?

Would you like to have someone living with you? If so, could you see Father Stuart for further details.

"HTK at Kawana Island Retirement Village (KIRV)

Outreach continues to expand, with Rev’ds Christine and Bob Woolner conducting an inaugural, Ecumenical Service at KIRV on Tuesday 17th Feb.

With the agreement of Village Manager, Russ Dunstan, we plan for this to become a regular 3rd Tuesday of the month activity, extending HKT outreach to many unable to regularly attend services at HTK.

On Shrove Tuesday, pancakes were on the menu as Christine and Bob met residents at morning tea before the Service.

Feed back from residents has been encouraging for continuation of this new program." Thanks.

Farmer’s Market Golly Gosh! We’ve broken one of the Farmer’s Market Rules.

We said that: rain, hail or shine, we would be there. Well. Marcia had other ideas.

As Rae and David were not on roster that Saturday, they almost let the stall continue, but conscience got the better of Rae as she saved our volunteers from a soaking.

HTK ….. CAFÉ BY THE LAKE

IS AN IMPORTANT OUTREACH MINISTRY

The café provides an opportunity for parishioners to “Go the extra mile” and invite their friends and any groups they are involved in to experience some HTK hospitality. We can cater for groups, although, if the group is large, it can be helpful for us to be advised earlier to ensure that there is sufficient food. We provide a quiet and enjoyable environment which is child friendly with activities to keep the children amused in safety. Staffing the café is tight, particularly when people are on vacation.

WE NEED MORE BARISTAS

If you would like to be trained in making coffee please speak to Father Stuart, or Scott and Sarah Windred.

Pastor Max Lucado tells of how our parents would react to someone coming to the door of our house. If a kid just showed up, there would be many questions and entry into the house would be denied pending the investigation. However, if the same kid showed up with us and we simply asked, "Dad, this is my new friend, can he come for dinner?" entry would be granted. Why? Because he was with us. It's the same with entering Heaven. By ourselves? Entry denied. But coming as the friend of Christ? Entry granted. When we are justified by faith through Christ, God see's His son and since we are with Him, we get to have dinner at God's table! What an awesome truth! Troy Knechtel -Kartoon Knuggets

ABM's Lent App and Appeal 2015

Welcome to ABM's Lent Appeal for 2015. This year we are supporting the following projects; Integrated Livelihood Program in Eastern Kenya, The Machakos & Makueni Diocese Leadership and Management Training in Kenya The Rev Gloria Shipp & NATSIAC. We are also excited to invite you to reflect on our mission theme “Together Towards Life”, the importance of mutuality in mission. To aid this reflection we have produced a number of resources: An ABM Lent App, which provides a reflection, prayer and listening action for each day of Lent. The 2015 Lent App can be downloaded for free onto any iPhone, iPad or Android device. If you haven’t already done so, you can download the Smartphone App for free from the Apple and Android stores. A special edition of Partners, which includes Bible Studies for each week of Lent Intercessions for each Sunday of Lent based on the Anglican Communion’s Five Marks of Mission. For details of ABM’s Lent appeal and to make a donation, and to access ABM’s Lent resources please visit our website. Thank you for your support and prayers. Yours in mission, Christopher Brooks Communications & Fundraising Manager

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS

A lunch after the 10am service on 22 February gave an opportunity for the parish to say thank you to all the

volunteers who make the running of our church possible. Almost all of our church family help in some way,

either in up-front roles or behind-the-scenes roles. Our church family is blessed by so many people who

contribute time, effort, prayer and finances to make HTK a loving, welcoming and spirit-filled church with a

passion for growth and outreach. Thank you to everyone!

My heartfelt thanks go to Fr., Stuart, Fr. Michael and all who prayed for me during and after my recent surgery.

Your prayers, visits, phone calls and cards were so gratefully received. Thanks be to God for my Quick recovery.

Love and blessings to you all. Lynnette Rew.

We wish to thank those who have supported us through this difficult time of grieving the sudden passing of Tony, father, friend and spouse of 28 years. Our despair was deepened by not having the close support of family nearby, and our own personal struggles in dealing with not having a funeral. There are several people who reached out to us from HTK. Your quick arrival, cards, letters of encouragement and sympathy and phone calls were comforting and reassuring. Father Michael presided over a private memorial to bring peace into our hearts and release Tony to God. His prayers gave us strength. We are slowly working through this one day at a time and feel those people should know our gratitude to them personally. They are: Father Michael Martin Charlie Martin Wendy and Norm Scott and Sarah Esther Nigel, Deb, Lucy and Ben Pearl, Paul and Tess Don and Dianne Carol and Terry Janet Myrna and all those who backed us in prayer May God continue to bless each of you in what you do for others. Sincerely Zoë, Hannah and Lissa Ware

Two Big Thank Youse The First. A very big thank you to all involved in the HTK Farmers Market Stall. During 2014, it seemed sometimes that our efforts were in vain. Small takings and desperation at roster time. BUT, over $7000 was added to the HTK budget, enabling things to be done that may not have otherwise been possible. Greater than the financial income was perhaps the outreach offered by those manning the stall on Saturdays. As a result, a number of people have become regular worshippers and fewer are now asking, “What Church?” Bakers, Crafters, Jam and Pickle Makers, Packers and Pricers have all added to the outreach that we have been able to offer. Well done all. Encourage a friend to join you. It really can be fun! The Second Another great thank you to the small band of men who try to keep the Rector away from the lawn mower. There have been many favourable comments on the general tidiness of the grounds that you have accomplished. The recent, much needed rains have created a challenge for those rostered following a rain event, but you have risen to the challenge. This year, two additional names have been added to the volunteer list, so things could get a little easier. There’s more to be done, before we have the grounds completely under control, but your efforts have paved the way. Well done!

THANK YOU

I would like to thank the pastoral Care group and all who signed the card expressing their support and comfort to me when I lost my sister. It was very much appreciated.
