THE USEP PALARO 2014 held last August 12 to 16 saw the absence of the external campuses name- ly Bislig Campus, College of Teachers for Education and Technology (CTET) and College of Agriculture and Related Sciences (CARS) in Tagum-Mabini Campus, and College of Governance and Business (CGB) in Mintal Campus. Only the colleges residing in Obre- ro Main Campus participated in the event. Through an official statement written by the University Sports Director, Jolly J. Laboy last August 11, the holding of the maiden intercampus USeP Palaro was cancelled. It was approved by the University President. However, their absence did not constitute closure of their partic- ipation in future holding of the same Palaro. An effort is needed to revisit the necessary activities to be conducted particularly by the colleges in the external campuses prior to the Palaro and review the budgetary require- ments and their sources to expect a better arrangement of the future hold- ing of the USeP Palaro. Furthermore, USeP assures an equitable selection of potential athletes to create the University Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools (MASTS) Team, USeP-Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) National Socio-Cultural Team, and USeP-National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Team. Despite the cancellation, the CGB-Mintal Campus, the nearest external campus from Obrero sent their candidates for Ginoo at Binibini ng USeP for they have already spent money for the pageant’s expenses. This was to compensate the efforts exerted by the candidates during the pictorial and talent night. Still, the five-day Palaro ended successfully in spite of the last min- ute cancellation. WITH A STUNNING 17 GOLD, 4 silver and 8 bronze medals in their hands, the CEd let all the odds be in their favor as they delivered them- selves to domination in the Sports Events of the USeP Palaro this year. In the minor sports, Thunders garnered the first place in Lawn Tennis in singles, Blazing wolves in doubles. While in the women category, Bulls got both the singles and doubles. Warriors governed in Table Tennis in both singles and doubles in men category while Bulls in women’s singles and dou- bles. Thunders grabbed the gold in Dart in men’s division and Bulls in women’s division. Sepak Takraw was ruled by the Thunders and the Amazing Race was finished first by the Bulls. While in Word Facto- ry, Pirates became the champion. However, in the major sports, Bulls conquered the volleyball court in men’s division and Pirates in wom- en’s division. In softball, Thunders ramped to the top in men’s division and Bulls in women’s division. While in football, Bulls were the champion. Nonetheless, Bulls were also the king in the basketball court in men’s division and Blazing wolves in wom- en’s division. Despite some mishaps and the tough competition, the essence of camaraderie and unity still prevail in the hearts and minds of the USePians, accepting the downs yet celebrating the ups as the events concluded to its end. EIGHT ASPIRING PAIRS repre- sent their colleges, including the Mintal campus, ramped through the runway over the deafening crowd. It was a night to remember for the candidates competing for the crown of “Ginoo at Binibini ng USeP” 2014. From the production number, re- gional attire, and formal wear, they brightened up the dome with their smiles and tried to prove that they are worthy of the title. At the end of the night, Mr. Ernest Aristotle Pru- dente of CEd and Ms. Jacinta Eve Sevilla of CAS, proved their wits as they were crowned this year’s Ginoo at Binibini ng USeP to represent in the Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools (MASTS). The first runner-ups were Mr. Vel- rick Alibiano of UEP and Ms. Jennica Alexis Siocon of CEd and Mr. Jenisse Dowell Medel of CE and Ms. Gene- vieve Victoria K. España of CGB as 2nd runners-up, while Mr. Adonis Alladin of CGB and Ms. April Joy Obenza of Mintal came as 3rd run- ners-up. In comparison to the previous years, this year was obviously different be- cause of the integration of technolo- gy in giving score to the candidates. But some students commented that the atmosphere was dull because the ambience of the event was not as festive as the usual. Overall, the event was dubbed successful. Though the prestigious event ended up with a blast, it was very evident that there were lots of changes in this year’s pageant. But are those changes effective? LITERARY EVENTS PROVED the creativity and talent of the USePians during the USeP Palaro 2014 on August 13-15 at the Universi- ty of Southeastern Philippines with the theme: “Educate and Inspire: Sports and Socio-Cultural towards ASEAN competitiveness”. As a part of the socio-cultural events of the USeP Palaro, the literary competitions were participated by the eight colleges of the university. CEd won first in Oratorical Speech, Extemporaneous Speaking, Storytelling, while CE got it in Smart talking and inter- viewing, Dagliang Talumpati, Jazz Chant, Pagsulat ng Sanaysay and PRP. In addition, CE together with CGB and SAEc won the Debate. Whereas CAS dominated in Essay writing, CGB in Timpalak sa Pagkukwento and last- ly, UEP conquered Handang Pagtatalumpati. Cheers and yells for their respective college representa- tives flooded the venues where the events took place espe- cially during the awarding at the USeP dome where the CE Bulls were acknowledged as the over-all champion for liter- ary events with seven gold and two bronze medals. The CEd Falcons grabbed the second spot with three gold, five silver and three bronze medals while the CGB Warriors got the third place with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals. For the USePians, it’s great to have activities that will show their talents not just in sports but also in socio-cultural side. These so- cio-cultural events aim to promote ASEAN competitiveness among USePians. Everybody hopes this goal will be achieved. USEPIANS ARE INDEED HOLISTIC individuals as they showcased their calibre in the artistic arena and proved their wit and intelli- gence during the Visual Arts Competition and Quiz Bowl which took place at the Social Hall last August 15 as one of the events of the USEP Palaro 2014. The Blazing Wolves emerged as cham- pion in Charcoal Rendering followed by the Falcons and then the Pirates. For the On the Spot Painting Contest, Blazing Wolves were also declared champions, while the Fal- cons won the 2nd place followed by the Invincible Dragons. Meanwhile, in the Short Film Making, the Pirates bagged the gold medal; Bulls seized the sil- ver medal and the Warriors became the bronze medalists. Whereas, Bulls dominated the Quiz Bowl with 180 points, Falcons with 175 points as the 2nd placer and Erudite Owls with 135 points for the 3rd place. Indeed, USePians are not just athletic and performers but also artistic in their fields of expertise.
