What is Pre-painted Steel?
12
Pre-painted roof sheet steel is generally composed of a
steel substrate protected by a corrosion resistant metallic
coating, a surface treatment, a primer and a topcoat.

Quick facts on the paint system
14
• The steel substrate is hot-dip galvanized.
• The zinc layer gives a first protection against corrosion in Z200 for Chromadek® and >Z275 for Chromadek Ultim®.
…the substrate?
• The surface treatment is the first step in coil coating.
• This is a very thin layer of a few nanometers to ensure the adhesion of the organic layer to the substrate enhancing the corrosion resistance.
…the surface treatment?
• The role of the primer is to promote adhesion ensuring the corrosion resistance of the top or bottom coat application, usually applied from 5μm.

More facts on the paint system
• The topcoat provides the required surface characteristics, such as final appearance (colour, gloss & texture), hardness, resistance to ultraviolet and resistance to abrasion.
…the topcoat?
• Similar to the top coat with less harsh exposure and most importantly to guard against opportunistic corrosion derived from moisture and condensation (in certain instances the back coat is unwashed and this presents an opportunistic area for failure), this is where Chromadek Ultim® is superior.

Heat reflective roofing solutions
An exciting development in Heat Reflective roofing solutions
Four of the colours of the Chromadek® range (See Data Sheet C1.4),
Charcoal Grey, Dark Dolphin, Buffalo Brown and Aloe Green utilize an
advanced thermal technology paint system. This advanced paint system
incorporates a heat reflective pigment providing up to 8°C cooling and
improved durability. The durability of an exterior coating is measured
according to its capability of maintaining gloss, colour and film integrity.
How Heat Reflective Chromadek® works?
The heat reflective pigments present in Heat Reflective Chromadek® are
chemically inert and highly stable. Heat Reflective Chromadek® reflects
more of the sun’s energy to prevent the coating from absorbing energy
directly resulting in less heat build up resulting in longer life-cycles (less
fading).
It’s really cool!

Branding & marking: Know what you buy
29
• If it doesn't say Chromadek®, it won’t last like Chromadek
®.
• Not all colour roof sheeting is Chromadek®.
• Chromadek®, is marked on the reverse side at intervals of approximately.
900mm, parallel to the length of the strip, about 25mm from the edge.
• The letters are approximately 5mm in height and of the dot-matrix type.

Gentle care for Chromadek®
30
• Walking on roofs (avoid abrasive contact, soft contact)
• Scheduled roof maintenance (regular and important)
• Roof location (avoid adverse conditions)
• Roof pitch (< 5 degrees is a flat roof)
• Different metal compatibility
Correct type and class of fastener
Special fixtures for fitting solar panels
• Cutting:
- Avoid Swarf and Sparks from angle grinders
- Suggested alternatives, circular saw and nibbler cutting

Key considerations for Chromadek®
Considerations when caring for
Chromadek®
31
• Damage to paint coating • Repainting of roofs
3 interacting aspects
cause
effect
guidelines
Do’s and dont’s for Chromadek®
• Metal deposits: Loose fasteners, pop-rivet mandrills, metal
drillings/objects increase the risk of corrosion and should be
removed.
• Damage to paint coating could increase the risk for corrosion if
considered to be severe. Cleaning and touching-up with
appropriate paint should be considered. In areas where edge
corrosion is evident - (i.e. overlapping sheets and sheet ends),
the corrosion will spread unless treated in good time. Clean the
corroded edge thoroughly and repaint.
• Repainting of roofs:
If the need should arise to repaint a Chromadek® roof, it can be
done with an appropriate roof preparation method and a suitable
paint system. ArcelorMittal can be contacted for advice and
referral to approved and reputable roofing refinisher(s).

3 aspects to keep in mind
33
Handy Hints for Chromadek®
• If Chromadek® sheeting has been scratched to the substrate, it should be repaired with approved touch-
up paint with a thin paint brush to minimise unnecessary over-painting. Light scratches are best left
untreated. (Contact AMSA fore more info or visit our datasheet, C1.4)
• Wash the underneath of eaves down with fresh water every six months.
• Abrasive cutting or trimming of Chromadek® sheeting on top of roofs should be avoided. However, if
unavoidable, the iron particles must be removed from the roof surface by means of a non-scratch bristle
brush or broom, as it is not easily washed down by rain. If left on the roof the iron particles will start to
rust, tarnishing the Chromadek® paint surface. See Slide for recommended cutting equipment.

Prevention is recommended, apply correct cutting & cleaning practices
34
Recommended cutting practice
To minimize & avoid swarf. (see video)

Alternative to angle grinder cutting
35
• The slope of the roof shall be such that water can drain freely from it without
forming ponds. The minimum recommended slope for Box Ribbed or S-Rib
sheeting is 5°.

Fasteners to be used
• Ensure that the correct class of fasteners are used for the
application. All fasteners used for fixing Chromadek® to be in
accordance with AS 3566 Class 3 (correct class of fastener to be
applied for marine and industrial applications).
• Make sure fasteners are also washed and inspected for signs of
corrosion. Replace if they show signs of failure, rust or
degradation of the waterproof membrane.
• For coastal or heavy marine you need to use Class 4 fasteners
(Chromadek Ultim® applications)
• Chromadek® warranty advises the above.
37
Incorrect fasteners are the preferential site for premature metal roof
failure
Ordinarily Class 3 for Chromadek® & Class 4 for Chromadek Ultim®
Claims handling
• Claims are investigated on a case by case basis.
