The passageway connecng the library with Minster Yard opens out into a recepon area. Beyond the recepon area is a lobby, where

periodicals can be found, as well as oering electronic catalogue services, and presents an open view of the surrounding site as well as

downhill Lincoln. There is also staircase that allows access to the second oor situated above the lobby area that contains another smaller

seang area, and oers more open, sweeping views of downhill Lincoln, as well as Lincoln cathedral. Situated to the right of the lobby area

is a lounge area, where people vising the library can either sit and read or socialise. To the right of the lobby area is the rst library space,

containing material relang to the recent history of Lincolnshire. Beyond this library space is another l ibrary space, containg material

relang to the medieval history of Lincolnshire. Seang areas are present in both spaces, where people may sit and read whilst admiring

the views of the site through vast walls of glazing. For those needing more privacy when studying, there are study cubicles located at the

end of the second library space, or they may go upstairs to a mezzanine oor where more study cubicles are

located. Between the library spaces and the Roman wall is a long corridor; a transional space that allows access to both library spaces

from the recepon, as well as oering access for the sta to the sta oces at the east end of the rst oor.

The ground oor consists of two more library spaces. The rst houses material relang to Lincolnshire’s history from the Paleolithic up

to the Iron age. branching o of this space is a room for the temporary storage of books on this oor. The next library space is for more

specialist, limited books, as well as maps. The material housed in this library space is not for borrowing; instead those wishing to study

material from this space must take the books/maps to the seperate reading space. There is also an exhibion space on this oor, where

the Magna Carta will be displayed for a limited period of me each month. Other historic arfacts from Lincolnshire’s history will also be

exhibited in this space. Situated to the le of the exhibion space are the archives, archive viewing space, an oce for the keeper of the

archives, and a delivery bay for the delivery of new literature and material, as well as serving as a place for the disposal of refuse. The

archive area is accessed via the lobby area.

Magna Carta Display

On the ground oor of the library is a display area where Lincoln’s Magna Carta amongst various other historic arfacts, will be displayed, when not on

display at Lincoln castle.

The Magna Carta was issued in Lan in June, 1215. It was sealed under oath by King John at Runnymede, on the bank of the River Thames near Windsor, England, on 15 June 1215.

Magna Carta was the rst document forced onto a King of England by a group of his subjects, the feudal barons, in an aempt to limit his powers by law and protect their rights. The charter is widely known throughout the English

speaking world as an important part of the protracted historical process that led to the rule of constuonal law in England and beyond.

The 1215 charter required King John to proclaim certain liberes and accept that his will was not arbitrary—for example by explicitly accepng that no "freeman" could be punished except through the law of the land, a right that sll

exists to this day. The name Runnymede may be derived from the

Anglo-Saxon 'runieg' (regular meeng) and 'mede' (mead or meadow), describing a place in the meadows used to hold regular meengs. The Witan, Witenagemot or Council of the Anglo-Saxon kings of the 7th to 11th centuries was held

from me to me at Runnymede during the reign of Alfred the Great. The Council met usually in the open air. This polical organ was transformed in succeeding years, inuencing the creaon of England's 13th century parliament.

When King John agreed to the barons’ demands for peace at Runnymede in 1215, copies of the charter were made and sealed. They were distributed to sheris, cathedrals, and important religious houses throughout England. Lincoln

Cathedral’s Magna Carta is one of only four surviving originals.

The Bishop of Lincoln, Hugh of Wells, was present at Runnymede, along with Lincolnshire’s Cardinal Archbishop Stephen Langton. 12th century Lincoln was a place of learning and quite possibly where Langton’s ideas took shape. Langton

is credited with inuencing the terms of the charter.

Originally housed in Lincoln cathedral, Lincoln’s copy of the Magna Carta was transferred to Lincoln castle in 1993, where it can sll be seen today.

Descent to the Magna Carta display area

The Magna Carta will be situated in its own display room, located

directly under the entrance to the site in the Roman wall, which canonly be reached by taking a short ight of stairs from the artefact

dispay area down into the lowest level of the library. This ancient,

priceless document wil be contained within a glass wall, through

which the bare brickwork of the foongs of the Roman wall will be

visible

Situated above the recepon/lobby area will be a large, open reading

area that canlevers out from the main facade of the library, over thecarpark below. Here people vising the library will be able to read

or study in relave peace and quiet, with sweeping south views out

over the site, the ruins of the Bishops palace and downhill Lincoln,

whilst also being oered views north, up over the Roman wall to the

Cathedral above

Historical Artefact display area

This area is dedicated to the display and exhibion of valuable

historical artefacts relang to the history of Lincoln and Lincolnshire.

This area projects out furthest from the facade of the library and

canlevers over the driveway below. At the end of the display area is

a large sheet of glazing, direcng the aenon of those inside out to

ruins of the medieval Bishops Palace; another historical artefact

important to the history of Lincoln.
