TEACHING ACTIVITES:
1. Since the completion of my postgraduate and fellowship training in October 1994, I have maintained university appointments and involvement in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as a Lecturer at Flinders University, South Australia from October 1994 until December 1999 and at the University of Adelaide, South Australia from October 1994 until June 2010. My teaching responsibilities varied throughout this time and involved lectures, tutoring, mentorship and clinical supervision.
2. I served as an examiner for undergraduate medical students in surgical specialties from January 2006 until December 2009.
3. Through my involvement with AOSpine, a not-for-profit educational body linked to the AO Foundation, I have maintained a role in the education of spine surgeons internationally since 1994. Following my election as Chairman of AOSpine Australia and New Zealand in October 2003 and my appointment to the Asia Pacific Board, I took on the role of Education Committee Chairman for the Asia Pacific region. This involved the coordination of educational activities, faculty support and training for Asia Pacific, with activities undertaken in 14 countries including India, China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. I also served on the International Education Commission during this time. I stepped down from this role in December 2005 when I was elected President of the Australian Medical Association (SA), after which my focus for the term of this appointment was to represent the Medical Profession in South Australia in both the political and professional arena.
4. In January 2010, I was approached to stand again as the Education Committee Chairman for the Asia Pacific region. This was an open election with candidates nominated from five different countries. My focus since returning to this role has been faculty development, standardization of course content, and syllabus design for both faculty training activities and course content throughout the region. Through involvement in AOSpine in this capacity, I have assisted in training and mentoring over 100 surgeons in the Asia Pacific region. I have also participated in training activities to increase my own understanding of educational principles. These principles include the identifying knowledge gaps and the learning needs of course and program participants and then applying this to course design, faculty selection and content. This process is commonly referred to as “backwards planning”. I have also been involved in the formulation of a comprehensive AOSpine curriculum for lifelong learning, and developed an international syllabus for AOSpine Principles Courses, targeted at the level of knowledge required for residents and fellows.
The skills and knowledge I have obtained through these activities has had a marked effect on my understanding of educational processes, the effectiveness of various forms of educational activities. I have also become more skilled in relation to the provision of constructive feedback to medical students, residents, fellows, training course participants and faculty.
These skills, knowledge and experience have great relevance to my role and practice in my University practice and educational activities.
Undergraduate:
I have been involved in the supervision and mentorship of medical students since my appointment to both Flinders University and the University of Adelaide in 1994.
While practicing in Australia, I delivered lectures relating to the practice of spine surgery to medical students two or three times per year.
Since my appointment as Associate Professor, University of Colorado I have acted as mentor preceptor for the medical students MSK III orthopedic program. This involves regular, usually weekly, preceptor interaction with students in my clinics and intermittent lecturing relating to core curriculum topics their observation of my activities in the operating room.
I am also involved in the redesign of the Core Curriculum as it relates to spine pathology and the development of an online resource to students to access to undertake self-directed leaning in spinal disease and disorders.
Postgraduate:
I have been involved in postgraduate training in the field of orthopedics and spine throughout my career and continue to be involved in this activity through my appointment to the University of Colorado and working with residents in the UCDHSC Residency program.
Since July 2012 I have taken on responsibility for the University of Colorado Orthopedic Resident Core Curriculum program in spine. I have discussed the needs of the residents with the resident group and our Spine Fellows, to develop a program over 2 years that addresses their learning needs and knowledge gaps. There are a total of 13 lectures covering a wide range of spine disorders and their management, two bio-skills sessions to learn approaches and practice surgical techniques and spinal instrumentation. There is also an annual quiz session to assess their knowledge and knowledge gaps to enable modification of the program content and focus for the coming year.
I coordinate the Spine Service Journal Club, held the first Monday of the month. There are usually 11 such journal club meetings through the year that cover a wide range of spinal pathologies, research topics and techniques.
I have also been involved in the supervision of post-residency Fellows since 1994. Two clinical/research Fellows were appointed to the spine service of the Royal Adelaide Hospital annually, and one of these Fellows would spend two days per week under my direct supervision.
The Spine Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, and Adelaide Spine Clinic were recognize as the first AOSpine Centre outside of Europe and the USA in 1996 and we hosted and supervised short term AOSpine Fellows from Asia and the Middle East on a regular basis.
My involvement in the supervision of Fellows continues having moved to Colorado, with one ACGME accredited Fellow appointed to the Spine Service annually. This program recently underwent review and has been accredited through 01/01/2018.

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES:
Up until June 2010, when I ceased practice in Australia to take up the post as Associate Professor, University of Colorado Denver in the Department of Orthopedics, my clinical activities were divided between my private practice and a Government hospital/University practice.
Approximately half of my clinical time was spent working as a Senior Visiting Medical Specialist in the South Australian Government hospital system. I held two appointments, one at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, a Level 1 trauma hospital, and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. At the Royal Adelaide Hospital my involvement over in the 5 years prior to my move to the US was principally in the management of spine trauma as a member of the Spinal Injuries Unit. At the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, I was the senior spine surgeon involved in the assessment and treatment of pediatric spine disorders and deformity.
Since taking up my appointment at the University of Colorado in October 2010 I have built up a comprehensive spine practice focusing on the assessment and management of adult deformity and degenerative conditions of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. A large proportion of my cases are more complex deformity or revision cases. Another significant area of my practice involves anterior exposure and instrumentation of the spine, and I am also taking on an increasing amount of access work for my colleagues.
RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP:
1. Doctorial Thesis:
"Assessment of spinal cord blood flow and function in sheep following antero-lateral cervical interbody fusion in animals with and without spinal cord injuries" This research was conducted through the University of Adelaide in South Australia. Supervisors: Professor Robert D Fraser Professor Donald Howie Degree: Doctor of Medicine (Equivalent to PhD in USA) awarded October 1993
2. While working as a member of the Spine Unit of the Royal Adelaide Hospital, affiliated with University of Adelaide, the Institute for Medical and Veterinary Science and The Adelaide Centre for Spine Research, I collaborated and acted as co-investigator in a number of research projects resulting in the publications listed below.
3. Clinical Research
Clinical and research activities as Principle Investigator: I am the principle investigator for a research project in collaboration with the
