Travel Grant Program (1)

• All bargaining unit members holding appointments of .50 FTE or higher, in fixed-term, tenure-track or tenured appointments, are eligible to apply for and receive funds through this program.

• Per the current contract, the Faculty Development Committee shall not approve travel requests unless the request is matched by $150 in department, grant, contract, or personal funds.  Further, for requests over $750, a match of 20% of the total travel cost is required. Each travel request must indicate all sources of funds to be used in the requested professional travel.

Page 11: Christof Teuscher Portland State University Portland State University November 2011 Faculty Development Program Information.

Christof Teuscher www.teuscher-lab.com Portland State University

Travel Grant Program (2)

• Travel must include presentation of scholarly work, such as a paper, workshop, or seminar. Preference will be given to applications that are most clearly related to a faculty member's scholarly agenda or which clearly demonstrate that the travel will have a significant impact on the professional development of the faculty member, particularly of junior faculty.

• The committee will only fund one professional travel request per person each fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).

• Documentation of conference registration fees, estimate/quote for transportation and lodging costs is required for committee's review. Undocumented items cannot be funded by the Committee.

applicant?" Reviewers rank on a 0-5 scale.

Travel Grant Program: Dos and Dont’s (1)

• This grant is about your career!

• Tell us how/why this trip contributes to your career development, professional development, or scholarly agenda!

• The trip may benefit students, PSU, etc, but first and foremost, make the case how it benefits you.

• We don’t read between the lines, tell us what we need to know.

• Don’t focus on the science, focus on your career.

• We like to fund new lines of research.

• If you go to the same conference every year, tell us why this still benefits your career.

Page 16: Christof Teuscher Portland State University Portland State University November 2011 Faculty Development Program Information.

Christof Teuscher www.teuscher-lab.com Portland State University

Travel Grant Program: Dos and Dont’s (2)

• If you are a senior faculty, be extra careful to justify the benefits to your career.

• Tell us what the consequences are of not attending.

• Tell us how important the event is compared to other events.

• Document all budget items with a quote or confirmation. We cannot fund undocumented items!

Travel Grant Program: Dos and Dont’s (3)

• A bad example”

– “I’ll be attending the 5th Annual Knitting Symposium. My presentation is about the influence of circular needles on decorative stitches. The presentation will allow me to present my work to a bigger audience.”

Travel Grant Program: Dos and Dont’s (3)

• A good example”– “The 5th Annual Knitting Symposium is the premier conference

in the field with about 1,000 attendees. I will be presenting my new research on the influence of circular needles on decorative stitches. The paper presents a key piece in my longer-term research vision. I am considered an expert on circular needles and it is very important for me to present this new research to the community to further strengthen my expert status in view of proposing a special session for the next edition of the conference. Becoming an organizer of a special session would directly benefit my professional development and represent an important piece for my tenure application in 2012. In addition to presenting a paper, I have organized professional meetings with two of my potential tenure reference letter writers. Not attending the conference will negatively affect my upcoming tenure application.”

Faculty Enhancement Program (1)

• Program is currently being revised. Additional uncertainty because of the collective bargaining.

• Call for proposals will be issued before the end of November.

Page 20: Christof Teuscher Portland State University Portland State University November 2011 Faculty Development Program Information.

Christof Teuscher www.teuscher-lab.com Portland State University

Faculty Enhancement Program (2)• Funds are intended to further the career of the faculty member, not

develop new programs or institutions at PSU.

• Proposals that primarily benefit the institution rather than the individual will not be funded.

• This includes proposals to create new programs, centers, or institutes; provide office support; found museums; expand curricular offerings; construct PSU web pages; and launch new organizations.

• Faculty must provide strong justification for how the proposal enhances professional development.

• Proposals should specifically address the scholarly import and context of the project.

• The Committee will fund travel for research related activities such as data collection and fieldwork, but not for the sole purpose of presenting a paper or attending a conference. These requests should be submitted to the Professional Travel Grant Program.

Faculty Enhancement Program (3)• Summary: We are willing to fund almost anything as long as you

can make a strong case that it benefits your professional development.

FE Program: Evaluation Criteria• The Committee will judge applications on the basis of the scholarly or

creative merit of the project, and on the ability of the applicant(s) to complete the proposed project.

• The Committee will also consider the history, nature, and sufficiency of past and present funding received by the applicant(s).

Page 23: Christof Teuscher Portland State University Portland State University November 2011 Faculty Development Program Information.

Christof Teuscher www.teuscher-lab.com Portland State University

FE Program: Dos and Dont's (1)• The body of the proposal must contain a separate, clearly labeled

section justifying the budget request.

• The rationale for each budget item must be specified.

• Avoid jargon.

• Tell us what the outcomes will be.

• If you fund students, tell us what they will do.

• Be realistic and specific. Less is often more.

• Tell us how this work fits into your scholarly agenda and why it is crucial for you to get the funding.

• Senior faculty should make an extra effort to justify the benefits for their professional development.

• The Committee likes to fund new lines of research that lead to proposals.

• Tell us what we need to know, we don't read between the lines.
