Development updateSports Pitch DevelopmentsFollowing the granting of planning permission for the two new sports pitches at the west end of campus some preparation works to the site have taken place. The main construction work will start in the spring. The actual start of work will be determined by the weather and the conditions on site.

University LibraryA major project is underway to refurbish the Library on campus. The project will see an increase in the number of study spaces and significant enhancements to the general environment.

The majority of the work is taking place inside the building but the external cladding to level 4 will be replaced and the main entrance will be remodelled as part of the project. The timing and details of this work have not been confirmed as yet. The majority of the work to transform the library will take place over the summer vacation in 2013.

Health and Biosciences building and National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine The former Bridgeman Building has now been demolished. Work to construct the new building will begin this month (January). It will take approximately two years to complete.

East Park demolition projectsIn addition to the former Bridgeman Building a number of other buildings have been, or shortly will be, demolished. The Music Centre has already gone and the removal of Victory Hall is well underway. When this is completed the Dance Studio will also go. Plans are being progressed to regenerate this whole area of campus with a major landscaping scheme and further information on this will be available in due course.

Falkner Eggington hall of residenceWork to refurbish the Falkner Eggington hall of residence on campus is also underway. The refurbishment of the hall involves Ocon Construction carrying out a complete strip out of the existing accommodation, upgrading acoustics, installing new floors and ceilings and a complete redecoration of 521 student bedrooms. The project will be complete for the 2013/14 academic year.

University academic links up with

MP, Nicky MorganThe University’s Dr Elaine Yolande Gosling has taken part in the Royal Society’s Pairing Scheme 2012.

The pairing scheme aims to build bridges between parliamentarians and some of the best scientists in the UK. It is an opportunity for MPs to become better informed about science issues and for scientists to understand how they can influence science policy. Over 200 pairs of scientists and MPs have taken part in the scheme since it was launched in 2001.

Elaine swapped her desk at the Design School for the historic corridors of Westminster, when she visited Nicky Morgan MP at the House of Commons for a ‘Week in Westminster’ back in October. During her visit Dr Gosling shadowed Nicky to learn about her work. She also attended a House of Commons Science and Technology Committee meeting, Prime Minister’s Question Time and a meeting with Professor Sir John Beddington, Government Chief Scientific Advisor.

Nicky then visited campus to ‘shadow’ Elaine at work in the Design School.

Dr Gosling, part of the Design Ergonomics Research Group, has specific interests in how people use and interact with the design of the world around them. She has concentrated much of her research in the fields of inclusive design, user-centred design and user-product interaction. She is keen to see how her research can be applied to policy making at national Government level.

Donations Fund updateThe assessor panel for the Community Donations Fund met in November to consider bids to the Education Fund. As in previous years an impressive range of projects were submitted for consideration and the panel found it difficult to choose which good causes should receive a share of the £5k available to them.

In total nine projects were awarded money and the groups supported were: Loughborough CofE Primary School, Loughborough Cancer Self Help Group, The David Clarke Railway Trust, Warning Zone, Youth Shelter, Peter Le Marchant Trust, The Exaireo Trust, The PBC Foundation and Lovers of Literature

The next round of funding will be made available in March and details of how to apply are available by logging on to www.lboro.ac.uk/community

Vice Chancellor patrols with police The University’s new Vice Chancellor spent a Saturday night on patrol with police in Loughborough back in October.

Professor Allison was invited to spend a night with the police by the local policing unit commander Inspector Johnny Monks.

He joined officers at 9pm. Following a briefing with Inspector Monks, he went out on patrol with Sergeant Shaun Gosling and other officers. They took Professor Allison into the town centre; and around areas where a lot of students live alongside local residents before going to the Students’ Union on campus. Professor Allison went home in the early hours of the morning.

Sergeant Gosling said; “It was an exceptionally quiet night in town but Professor Allison witnessed a number of incidents including a group of young people throwing bottles from a balcony, a very distressed woman who had become separated from her daughter and we dealt with a young person who had become ill through drinking too much. Although not the busiest of nights Professor Allison still got to see the depth and breadth of the issues we deal with in our line of duty.”

Recalling his experience of the night, Professor Allison, said; “I have always had great admiration for the police and the time that I spent with them reinforced this. I observed the officers that I accompanied deal with a range of issues, often involving people who had consumed a large volume of alcohol. I was most impressed with the tact and diplomacy used by the police to manage difficult situations.

“My overwhelming impression is that the police in Loughborough are a highly professional and dedicated group of officers. They have the best interests of the community at heart and deal with a range of difficult issues. I am particularly grateful to them for how they interact with students and local residents alike and congratulate them on undertaking difficult work on behalf of the town’s community.”

National Poetry Day In the run up to National Poetry Day the University’s Student Outreach and Recruitment team organised a poetry competition with local schools.

The aim of the competition was to raise aspirations and attainment through English and promote the idea of studying English and Drama at higher education level.

The challenge, aimed at students aged 11-13 in the East Midlands, was to create a 20 line poem with the theme ‘Stars’. Some fantastic entries were received and the judges really enjoyed reading all the poems.

The winning entry, revealed on National Poetry Day (4 October), came from Chris Hancox from Castle Donington Community College. The winning poem is reproduced below.

Stars They’re magnificent, shining brightly,We can’t begin to understand.Always there, shining nightly,The sky is alive, above the land. They hover over London town, Celebrating, having fun. Then the sun comes above the ground,And you hear the starter’s gun.Off go Ennis, Farah, BoltRacing to their gold’s.Murray serves no double faults, Leaving Roger cold.Ainslie sails out at sea,The rowers pull their weight. The crowd cheers for Team GBHoy wins medal number eight. But when the sun is lost from view,And darkness falls so black. The stars come out and dance for you,Then see the world dance back.

Social event success for Kingfisher EstateThe student and permanent Loughborough residents of the Kingfisher Estate came together for a social in early December. The event, organised by Rachel Chambers, community development officer at the Students’ Union, was an opportunity for neighbours to get to know each other in an informal setting. Around 30 residents of the estate shared a take away meal in the common room of Kingfisher Hall, kindly provided by the warden. They were joined by community warden Louise Doherty, PC Suzie Jackson and other members of the Students’ Union Executive.

Page 12: Christmas tree festival - lboro.ac.uk · MOZART String Quartet in D, No.20, K.499, Hoffmeister BRITTEN String Quartet, No.3, Op.94 SCHUBERT String Quartet in G, No.15, D.887 Royal

Rachel commented: “Everyone seemed to be mixing well and talking to each other which was great. Most seemed keen for the event in some form to happen again, so I have thought of maybe making it a termly event with different food or doing something for charity that will help bring the Kingfisher community together.”

Can you help with University research?Volunteers are required for two important research projects.

The first is a diabetes study. Male participants are required for a study looking at the influence of short duration exercise on reducing the risk of ‘type two’ diabetes. Volunteers must be within the age range of 18-50 years old and have a body mass index of above 27. They must also be able and willing to exercise for short periods of time at high intensities and have no history of any cardiovascular/metabolic diseases such as diabetes. In addition they must be a non-smoker, not taking any anti-inflammatory medication and not be generally active.

All travel costs will be reimbursed and volunteers will receive a detailed health screening and a full comprehensive assessment of their personal fitness.

Anyone interested in taking part should contact Ben Kelly at the University by emailing [email protected], or by calling 01509 226352.

The second project is for the Leicester-Loughborough Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity Biomedical Research Unit (BRU). The Unit, which incorporates expertise from University Hospitals of Leicester, focuses research on improving health by increasing physical activity, reducing sedentary behaviour and improving diet.

The Unit is looking to recruit volunteers to take part in a number of focus groups to help BRU identify research priority areas. These focus groups could include subjects such as exercise/physical activity/sedentary behaviour or chronic disease including diabetes, heart disease and obesity. The Unit is also looking to provide workshops, public lectures and seminars concerning such issues so that findings can be made public.

Anyone interested in further information about these opportunities can visit the BRU website: www.II.dlpa.bru.nihr.ac.uk and click on the link ‘Get Involved’.
