Sunday Reflection
"They shal l name him
Emmanuel, which means 'God is with
us.'" No other religion makes such a
radical claim. To be Christian is to
believe that God is truly with us, in
the most personal, intimate way
imaginable; he is one of us! What a
remarkable reality. Through the
Incarnation, God became human and
lived among us to love us, to guide
us, to heal us, and to strengthen us.
Three days from now, we will
celebrate this extraordinary gift that
came to us on the first Christmas Day.
All other Christmas gifts, no matter
how exquisite or precious, pale in
comparison to the gift of Jesus Christ.
All the joys and festivities of the
season, all the love and generosity
that go into our beautiful holiday
traditions, can be all the more
meaningful when we keep this in
mind.
Although secular celebrations
of Christmas ignore the significance
of the holy day, the church gives us
Advent to help us keep our focus. In
these weeks of yuletide preparation,
we stop to remind ourselves what it
means to be Christian, in case we
have begun taking it for granted.
We reorient our hearts and minds to
recall, once again, the mysterious
glory of the Incarnation.
We have been praying
throughout this season of anticipation,
"O Come, O Come, Emmanuel." The
real magic of Christmas is that we
get exactly what we prayed for!
Jesus has come. God has answered
our prayers and given us what we
truly desire in the depths of our
hearts: himself, Emmanuel, God with
us.

Stewardship In today’s Gospel we hear of the coming of Emmanuel, which means
“God is with us.” We celebrate three Advents: the birth of Christ, his Second Coming,
and his presence in the world today. Our daily lives are attended by God’s presence.
Indeed, “God is with us.” The Good News of Christ’s Incarnation is that we are the sign,
“sacrament,” of Christ’s presence in the world. People are supposed to see us, see how
we love one another, see how we treat the stranger among us, give comfort to the poor
and afflicted, share the Good News with joy. They see how good stewards are the
light of Christ. And there can be no possible response except to say: “God is here!”

Christmas Dinner Prayer
Loving God and Father of us all, we joyfully
celebrate the birth of your Son, the eternal Word
who came to dwell with us and is born this day of
the Virgin Mary. May the meal we share on this
great feast satisfy us not only with the good food
you give us, but also grace us with the fullness of
your love, which you bestowed on our human
nature when your Son took on our very flesh. May
we come to share completely in your divine life
through the coming of your Son among us. May his
self-giving love be made manifest in our hearts so
that the joy of our Christmas feast may extend
beyond our family and home to touch the lives of
others with the love that makes this day holy and
makes us all children of one family in you. Amen.
