Small Groups Rev. Sean Devolites [email protected]

As we prepare to adjust our new Worship Schedule

beginning next month, we also wanted to let you

know that we are planning to begin 2018 with two

Adult Sunday Morning Small Groups during the 8:45

Worship hour.

We are excited to offer these opportunities for folks

to be in a small group and worship in the style of

their choice on Sunday mornings.

We have more specific details forthcoming that we

will share on the Small Groups webpage

(braddockstreetumc.org/small-groups) as well as in

the weekly bulletins. If you have any questions or

are interested in being a part of a new Small Group,

contact Pastor Sean!

W ith all that goes on during the holidays, it

is easy for the hustle and bustle to become

a bit overwhelming amid all the many things we

may be feeling.

For that reason, Braddock Street UMC will once again hold a

Quiet Christmas Service on Monday, December 11,

at 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary.

It is an opportunity for us to take a step back and find

God's peace in the midst of everything we are sensing

outside and feeling inside.

We will have contemplative, acoustic music and walk

through some of the Psalms that help speak to

God's presence in the midst of such seasons of life.

Join us for a time of prayer and reflection in the middle

of the Advent season.

Join us as we return to El Centro on Monday, December 18, at 7:00 PM for Cantina Carols! Invite a friend as we hang out, sing carols, and talk about what our favorite carols say about God.

It is a great opportunity to connect a neighbor to our church community in a friendly, low-stress way. We look forward to seeing you there!

If you have any questions or would like to help out, contact Pastor Sean at sean@braddockstreet umc.org.

The weekend of November 11-12 was a busy one for Troop 3. We collected food for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank as part of the Scouting For Food campaign. It was a bright, sunny and very cold morning. Most of these scouts also camped over the weekend at Kernstown Battlefield where they helped the Association with a conservation project of clearing brush. This was the same weekend that temperatures plummeted to 15-degrees F. overnight. The bonfire kept everyone quite warm.

The Troop will be holding a lock-in during December and will travel to Camp Rock Enon for Winter Games in January. The scouts will be helping with Jubilee Kitchen on Saturday, December 23. This is a special service project for the troop to help serve our neighbors in need for the Christmas holiday. On behalf of the troop, I’d like to sincerely thank Braddock Street UMC for over a century of loving support you have provided the scouting program! A Merry Christmas to all!

M ission and Service

Upcoming Mission Trips On Wednesday, December 27, we will be sending five team members to Bo, Sierra Leone, to be with the people of the Child Rescue Centre and Mercy Hospital. They will be returning on January 5. The team members will be from several partner churches. Our members are Jill Barker, Jeff Buettner, Liza Buettner, Allie Kitts, and Marinda Reames. On Sunday, January 28, we will be sending five more team members to Baldwin, Louisiana, and the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s (UMCOR’s) depot, Sager

Brown. They will be checking kits that will be sent throughout the world for many kinds of relief efforts. They may also get the opportunity to work out in the community around the Depot. The team members are from three Virginia churches. Braddock Street UMC members are Sue Boltz, Joanna Dietz and Becky Sherman. We thank you for your support of our missionaries and invite you to pray for them!

SCRIP for Christmas! Gift cards make excellent Christmas gifts. You can also use gift cards to purchase Giving Tree gifts and to do your everyday shopping. A percentage of your purchase goes to support Adult Mission trips. We are offering $10 gift cards to Panera, Starbucks, Buffalo Wild Wings, Dunkin Donuts and Bath and Body Works. These $10 gift cards are great teacher gifts or stocking stuffers. Please stop by the Scrip table to purchase gift cards and support Adult Mission trips.

Shepherds Run

C hristmas is coming and many are ready to

celebrate the birth of our Savior! But some will need to work as public servants on Christmas Day and will be unable to be with their families. These people include police, fire fighters, hospital workers, nursing home workers, and even convenience store workers. So, like the shepherds from long ago, we are once again inviting you to herald the good news of Jesus’ birth to those who cannot be with their families.

H ow can you participate? We are looking for food

(homemade or store bought cookies, holiday bread, cheese and fruit) to be brought to the church the week of December 18. We will freeze the baked goods. On Sunday, December 24, we will be setting up tables with maps and plates of food for you to deliver. We hope you will come out to share the good news of Jesus’ birth with our neighbors!

Christmas Eve Offering Each year at Braddock Street we remember that Christmas is about gifts that we give to others in honor of the Christ Child, and so on Christmas Eve, our entire offering goes toward mission and service. This year is unique in that the fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve fall on the same day. So, we ask that you consider giving your normal Sunday morning offering and then use the envelopes in the pews for a second mile Christmas Eve offering. In this way, we will be able to determine what needs to go to our regular operating budget and what will be given away in mission. Each year, $10,000 goes toward our partnership with Helping Children Worldwide in Bo, Sierra Leone, with the Child Rescue Centre. We are also excited to announce our support for local organizations with funds going to the Evans Home and the Winchester Rescue Mission. We pray that you are moved to give this second mile giving, even though our services will be combined on December 24 to celebrate both the fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve!

WATTS will be hosted at Braddock Street UMC January 6-13, 2018. We will be able to provide refuge from the winter cold for up to 35 homeless guests! To volunteer, go to our web page, click on Events and then click on the red button “WATTS Week Sign Up.” A short training session will be held in the Fellowship Hall after each service on Sunday, December 17, for all volunteers. If you would like to support our WATTS week financially, please make your check payable to BSUMC and put WATTS in the memo line. These donations will be used to purchase food, supplies and gloves for our guests. One of the biggest challenges our guests face each year is having access to clean socks and underwear. To help, we will be collecting donations of new socks and underwear (men’s and women’s). Donations may be left in Room 134 or at the Connection Table in the Gathering Space. We will also collect $5 McDonald’s gift cards to give to any guests who are turned away because we are at capacity. This allows them to go to a warm place to get something to eat. Gift cards may be left in the church office. Any questions contact Barbara White at 540-678-0271 or [email protected].

WATTS Week at Braddock Street, January 6-13

O ur Giving Tree is up and running in the Gathering

Space. We thank everyone who has donated items for both our children and senior citizens! When we remember that Christmas is a celebration of Jesus’ birth and how Jesus calls us to care for one another, there is no greater gift we can bring to the manger than remembering those who are oftentimes forgotten.

W e invite you to come celebrate with us as we

wrap gifts for Operation Remember (the gifts for the elderly) on Friday, December 15. We will begin with a pizza dinner at 6:00 and then wrap gifts with the Mountain Movers, youth and any interested adults until we get it all done. We will have Christmas music playing and activities for smaller children who may be too young to wrap, but whose parents would like to participate, as well. All ages are encouraged to join us for the fun!

P lease email Anne at [email protected] if

you have any questions! Thank you for remembering the Christ in other people this Christmas season!

The Chocolate Festival It is not too early to start thinking about the Chocolate Festival, a major Braddock Street fundraising event. The Festival will take place here at Braddock Street on Saturday, February 10, from 11 AM to 2 PM. A lot of “mostly chocolate’” baked goods will be needed as well as items for the Silent Auction. Sign up to donate baked goods or Silent Auction items on the SignUpGenius website found on the church webpage or Constant Contact starting in early January. Additional help will be needed with set up of the Fellowship Hall, wrapping baked goods in cellophane and ribbon, manning the different areas during the event, and cleaning up afterwards. This is a great time for all ages to come together in fellowship! For more information, contact Jill Barker at [email protected].

Service Worship We invite you to come to worship and then join us in the Fellowship Hall to pack supplies for CCAP (Congregational Community Action Project) on Sunday, January 28.

The Winchester Area Temporary Thermal Shelter (WATTS) is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides a safe, temporary, overnight, cold-weather shelter for homeless

guests in Winchester and Frederick County, Virginia.

From the Church Office

Hospital Visits: If you know of a church member who is in the hospital, please call the church office. Due to HIPPA regulations we can no longer receive notification from the hospital about members who are in the hospital. We care about our members; we want to visit them! Let us know.

Pew Pads: Do you sign in each week? If you do, we thank you! The pew pads help us to keep track of members, those who attend regularly and visitors. Signing in is really important. This may seem unnecessary, but it truly is helpful. Simply put, if you don’t sign in, your attendance record looks like you never come to church! We may even contact you to see if you are okay. So, please sign in and help us out. Thank you. Attention Members: Members, if your address, name, cell phone, home phone, or email changes or if there is a birth in your family, please notify the Church Office so we may keep up with you! Next Newsletter - The next newsletter is the February 2018 issue and is scheduled to be published by Sunday, January 28.

SAVE THE DATE! SPRING WOMEN’S RETREAT: In September, the Braddock Street UMW sponsored a women’s retreat at Camp Overlook. The women who attended left with a deep desire to “do it again” soon. And that’s just what we are planning. We have reserved the Blessings Lodge at Camp Overlook for March 9-11. That’s two nights instead of one! The cost is $130 for two nights and $85 for one night, which includes meals. For those interested, we do need a $50 deposit for our down payment. Please make checks payable to “BSUMC UM Women” and leave them in the church office. The planning committee hasn’t narrowed down the program focus yet but all will be revealed soon. One thing for certain, there will be LOTS of laughter!

CHOCOLATE LOVERS…READ ON!! Divine Chocolate bars in six varieties (3 Milk Chocolate and 3 Dark Chocolate) are available for pre-order by signing up in the Narthex during Sundays in November. Each 3.5 oz. bar is $5, will make wonderful stocking stuffers, and will be delivered in time for Christmas giving! The Divine Chocolate Company is a Fair Trade company from Ghana, Africa. Inside each wrapper is information about the men and women who are cocoa farmers and other interesting information about the company. The UMW will use the proceeds from this fundraiser to help make year-end donations to the 10 missions it supports. There is a list of these missions at the sign-up table in the Narthex.

CHRISTMAS DINNER MEETING – SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10 All UMW members, spouses or friends are invited to attend the dinner meeting in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, December 10, at 6 PM. Darry Milanov will be preparing a delicious roast beef dinner complete with mashed potatoes, green beans, bread, jello salad and dessert. Wayne Corbett will be playing Christmas Carols for a sing-a-long following the business meeting. We will install officers for 2018, present UMW Recognition Pins, and hold the annual Candle Burning Ceremony. The cost of the dinner is $13.00 and reservations may be made by calling Becky Sherman at 681-242-2395 or email to [email protected] by Monday, December 4. Prepayment is required and checks may be dropped off in the church office. (Please do not call the church office to make your reservation.) We hope to see you there!

HELPING HANDS FOR THE BACKPACK PROGRAM The Deborah-Ruth Circle had some helping hands from seven members of Girl Scout Troop 14024 with the Backpack Ministry Program in early November. Jennen Adcock (a member of Deborah-Ruth Circle) and Lindsey Anderson are the Girl Scout Leaders of these third grade girls. The troop members brought in needed supplies, stocked the shelves in the Mission Room, and then filled 44 bags for students at Redbud Run Elementary School. Deborah-Ruth Circle members appreciated their help! Many hands do make light work!

Nurture News

Where’s My Church Directory? Don’t despair! Our new church directory is on its

way to completion with 180 families gracing its pages. Nurture folks are working on the layout and choosing pictures that represent the mission, fellowship, and worship of Braddock Street. Directories should be ready for distribution by January 2018.

Lenten Reflections: The Nurture Committee invites the congregation to help create a booklet of daily

reflections and sacred stories to be used during Lent. The format is simple: a Bible verse, a brief reflection or

memory from your faith journey, and a short prayer. The deadline for submissions is February 9, 2018. The booklet

will be ready for the congregation on Ash Wednesday, March 1. Submissions may be sent to [email protected].
