DECORATEA TREE FOR

The Christmas season is upon us. Lights are hung, indoors

out, trees are trimmed, the halls are decked and food is prepa

Families and friends gather to share the spirit of the season. It

time of excitement and anticipation.

Amidst all the frenzied activity of preparing for the season why

take some time and add a few outdoor decorations for the bird

is easier than you may think. The following are just some o

many ways to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to our fine feathefriends.

A string of unsalted and unbuttered popcorn, stale popco

works best, can be draped around a tree. For something a litt

bit more colorful why not make a string of fresh cranberrie

or alternate cranberries with popcorn. Do you have stale

bagels? Dont throw them out. As long as they are not

moldy tie a ribbon around them and hang them out for

the birds. Whole grain or fruit bagels would be best. If

you have a grapefruit for breakfast save the rinds, poke

three holes around the edge, thread with colorful yarn

or string, fill with bird seed or suet and hang. Thick

slices of oranges, dried apple slices, and many other

fruits either fresh or dried, can be hung for the birds toenjoy. Unsalted peanuts in the shell can be strung

together or sprinkled on the ground. Pinecones

rolled in peanut butter, that has been mixed with

coarse corn meal or oats, are easy to make and

to hang. Suet balls can also add to the festive

touch and will attract woodpeckers to your tree.

Having a variety of food available will attract a

wider range of birds to your yard. Whatever

you choose be sure that it is as natural as

possible and when hanging your bird treat

decorations try to use cotton or wool strings

and yarns. In the spring the birds can use

them to build their nests.

Decorating a tree for the birds is a great

family activity but dont stop after the

decorations have been put up. Take

some time to sit and watch the birds.

identification book would make

a wonderful Christmas gift for

yourself or others. The Nature

bank, so you fill out the application. Cathy was doing fine

until she came to the space for Name of your former bank.
