Christine Brennan: Solo Exhibition at Brumields Gallery
8 June - 13 July
Christine Brennans irst solo show at Brumields Gallery in Boise, Idaho, coincidently marks the gallerys
one-year anniversary representing the California-based artist. Brennan approached the gallery because
she was a fan of some of the artists the gallery represented, and sure enough she was a good it for the
gallery owners taste for quirky and eccentric work. Christine Brennans work is dreamlike and enigmatic.
Never setting out to illustrate a speciic theme or story, the paintings are united by a feeling of enchant-
ment and whimsy. Working primarily in oil on paper or board, Christine Brennans artworks exude an
ethereal sensation, portraying characters and scenes that are both surreal and sincere. The work stands
as the artists independent visual statement and yet is meant to incite a relationship with each viewer thatis unique to them.
The audiences response to the work and their personal interpretation is an important dialogue for the
artist. She leaves narratives deliberately ambiguous and gives no titles that might lead the viewer in a
certain direction. She presents a plethora of symbolic and allegorical references that spin the intellect and
emotions, and we are left to ind our own orientation and wonder in whatever direction we like. She is
keenly exploring the unconscious mind. The richly lit, imagined narratives she envisions being evoked by
her imagery, but directed by each viewers personal stories and associations, are an important motivator
for this artists creative practice.

Brennan becomes quickly anxious when asked to
discuss her work, preferring that we conduct our
conversation with the work itself. For her, painting
is a non-verbal, silent process she uses to convey
thoughts and feelings that would otherwise be
inexpressible. If not for painting, Brennan can pic-
ture herself striving to write poetry in a continued
effort to channel a stream of consciousness. But
for now We can continue to be entertained asher imagination runs amok in this newest group
of paintings.
Christine Brennan studied at the Rhode Island
School of Design and earned a BFA in Illustra-
tion. Working out of her studio in Ojai, Brennan
exhibits across the country and has work in many
collections, including the Carnegie Art Museum,
and the City of Ventura Municipal Art Collec-
tion. Brennans list of private collectors is equallyimpressive - Drew Barrymore, Jonathan Winters,
Pat Richardson, and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Bren-
nan has earned several awards, such as the Direc-
tors Choice Master in our Midst Award from the
Carnegie Art Museum, the Best of Show award
from the Ventura County Assembly of the Arts,
and the Featured Artist Award for the Focus on the
Masters program.
