More specifically, it would be a discussion of close reading--how do you determine an author's intent, the reliability of a character, and make it universally appealing? It would be taught by Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes in the BBC's "Sherlock.” He is an amazingly well-rounded man who has played a number of Shakespearean characters as well. He takes a well-known story and revives it to capture the interest of modern day audiences, which is a skill that anyone who wants to teach literature should know.

If you could take any course from anyone alive in the universe, what would the course be and who would teach it?

I would want to take a course taught by Kurt Vonnegut and Charles Bukowski on how to write with poignant intensity --as they do in their writing. It would probably be a very difficult class and they would be bitingly harsh in their criticism of the students' work. I would expect nothing less from two of the greatest writers of my time, though. Learning to write in the style of my literary idols would drastically improve my writing technique and lend itself to a broadening of my style and voice as a writer. The title of the class would be "Life, Love, Death, Writing" and it would include analysis of Kurt and Charles' most famous works, as well as weekly assignments where the students would demonstrate their own versions of the two genius' pieces.

While geek and nerd tend to have negative stigmas, I like to view it the other way--geeks and nerds are crucial in making the world go round. Geeks and nerds are stigmatized because others envy their intelligence. It's an honor to be considered a geek and nerd.

It's interesting that there is even a distinction between a geek and a nerd. The difference is probably that geeks are extremely "nerdy" in specific matters, while nerds have a disposition toward general "nerdiness." Disregarding this absurdity, I simply consider myself an intelligent, introspective democratic socialist. This should suffice to describe my personal and political philosophies. In fact, I don't really describe myself under any blanket terms unless they are political in nature. Whether or not I am perceived as a geek or nerd is irrelevant. I know I am disciplined, motivated, and loyal in all my pursuits, academic or otherwise.

Being a nerd, being a geek, it just means that you love something and are really good at it. Which in the end, is what we all want from life, isn't it?

That book was what piqued my interest in genetics and particularly epigenetics and was what led me to choosing my major and ultimately the University of Iowa.

I was fascinated with Skloot’s book and would love to learn more about HeLa.

He knows how to satisfy large egos, while still commanding respect; coached both Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, winning numerous championships. Jackson helped his teams reach their full potential--exactly what great leaders need to do."

I chose Ned Block as the instructor for the simple fact that he seems to hold some sort of reductionistic identity theory of mind, and that position is incredibly fascinating to me.

Although I am technically an only child, Mori is like a sister to me. We received pictures, artwork, and letters from her several times a year. I really want to meet her someday, and when I do, I hope to learn about her and from her. Mori survived years of poverty, as well as a tsunami. She is an inspiration to me and my family. It would be a humbling honor to meet and learn through the eyes of my sister.

The class would talk about the implications of Chomsky's theory of universal grammar on second language acquisition, the process of learning a second language. Universal grammar, the idea that language is innate and not necessarily learned, has great implications on the field of linguistics and applies directly to subfields such as psycholinguistics.

Thomas Müller has the most envied skill – he always scores effortlessly, because he is always at the right place at the right time on the soccer pitch to kick the ball into the net. Other than competing with him in being hilarious, I really hope that I can learn from him how to be the right person to kick the ball to score, at the right place at the right time - it is usually called "good fortune" but it is actually more than that.

The title of the course comes from a lecture Kaufman gave at the 2011 BAFTAs in which he declared, "we all have wounds... this is the thing that is tap danced over five times a day... but it is the thing that wants to live." In his course, he would guide us through the process of uncovering our personal wound to its transformation into a "screenplay, novel, or philosophical treatise." Kaufman work ignores conventions because it draws so purely from this wound, and it is this ability to address and embrace his own vulnerability that results in the some of the most creative and beautiful screenplays in the history of cinema.

Organic lab was a lot of work but I really enjoyed setting up complicated glassware and synthesizing molecules. Watching solutions boil over and change color was cool, but the real excitement in the class came from understanding the reaction and its importance in industry and medicine. Ned was an awesome professor. He challenged our class to think, but never seemed antagonistic like some difficult professors can.

I strive to not simply go along with the status quo and conform in life. As Sarah Palermo once said, Being 'weird' is one of the most best complements you could ever give someone. If no one in the world was weird, everything would be normal, and that's boring. Be different. Stand out. Be the sore thumb that got hammered a couple times by a heavy mallet. Be that sole bird that's flying in the exact opposite direction everyone else is and hasn't a clue it's winter. My hobbies include spending ridiculous amounts of time making caloric behemoths, engaging in reckless social activities such as Snow Kabbadi, and marveling at the 8-foot inflatable Santa in my living room.

Science communicators, like Dr. Tyson and Carl Sagan, are truly unique individuals that understand how important it is for our entire society to understand and work to further a scientific understanding of our world and universe.

The course he would teach is "The Future of Education.” Coming from a small high school in a small town, I didn't learn proper study habits until I came to college. The types of lessons and motivations that he provides to the user is unparalleled in the education realm today and gives the user a desire to listen to the next lesson. I believe Salman Khan has opened a myriad of doors to people of all ages and deserves recognition for his current and future efforts to increase the productivity and efficiency of our education system.

The course would be titled The History of Tortall: A Legacy, which would depict the foundation and development of the country of Tortall, featured in all of Tamora Pierces novels.
