TO BOOK, CALL YOUR CRUISIN’ SPECIALIST...

Welcome...FEATURED INSIDE

Hi, I am Christina Astill, your local award-winning independent GoCruise holiday and cruise specialist.

As a real cruise addict I make sure I’m up to date with all the

new ships as well as any changes being made to the existing

ones. This year I have already stayed on P&O’s new flagship, the

very British Britannia and Royal Caribbean’s innovative Anthem

of the SeasSM, as well as cruised the Scottish Highlands and

Islands on Fred. Olsen’s Boudicca.

River cruising is also of great interest to me, I love to see how

these ancient route ways are so important to a country; last year

I cruised the Yangtze and was amazed by the volume of hi-tech

goods transported down the river interspersed with colourful

fishing junks. A journey down the Rhine to visit the Christmas

markets was another highlight of the year.

Of course I don’t just arrange cruises - prior to becoming part

of GoCruise I worked as an expedition and Safari guide in East

Africa, Morocco and Egypt, and each year (September) I take a

small group out to Kenya to watch the Wildebeest migration. If

you are interested in joining me please give me a call.

More people seem to be combining a cruise with a hotel stay at

the beginning or end of their holiday. When cruising from Venice

why not have a few days prior to the cruise exploring this watery

city, or in Barbados, relax for a week after your cruise; you could

even stay in New York and indulge in some Christmas shopping

then cruise back with no restricted luggage allowance!

My passion in life is to travel and I love to share my experiences

with others and use my knowledge and expertise to put

together holidays that dreams are made of…..

I am proud to have been arranging clients’ holidays for many

years; everyone is different and I always take the time to listen

to what you want and work hard to put together your personal

holiday - I am available even outside of normal office hours.

2015 is proving to be an exciting year for cruising so far, thanks to new ship launches, innovative onboard features and new itineraries. There is plenty more to look forward to this year and next, so here is our roundup of what is happening in the fastest growing sector of the travel industry.

The first of a new class of ship for Holland

America Line, the 2,650-guest ms

Koningsdam sets sail in April 2016. She will

not only be the first to bear that name, she

will usher in a new era of Pinnacle-class

cruising. “Koning,” means king in Dutch—

and is a salute to King Willem-Alexander,

the Netherland’s first king in more than 100

years. And “dam,” because, after all … this is

a Holland America Line ship, and the “dam”

naming convention dates back to 1883.

MS Koningsdam...

Arriving April 2016

Amadeus River Cruises have announced

that they will be upgrading their product

offering from next year. Guests will be

able to enjoy free-flowing quality red and

white wines from Europe’s famous wine

regions, beers and soft drinks with every

lunch on board as well as with dinner as is

currently offered.

We are counting down to the launch of

Regent’s new ship, set to launch in the

Summer of 2016. Billed as the most luxurious

cruise ship in the world, Seven Seas Explorer

will boast one of the highest space ratios and

staff-to-guest ratios ever seen in modern

cruise ship design. The 738-guest, all-suite,

all-balcony ship will be classic and timeless

utilising exotic stonework, polished woods,

sophisticated lighting and rich fabrics; with

ultra-elegant public rooms, a wide-range

of gourmet dining options and a museum-

worthy art collection ensuring guests a new

standard in luxury cruising.

Seabourn is partnering with UNESCO to

promote sustainable tourism at World

Heritage properties; helping to identify,

safeguard and promote unique cultural and

natural heritage around the world deemed

to possess outstanding universal value for all

humankind. This means that when you travel

with Seabourn, your trip will be enhanced by

deeper insight and information about these

intriguing destinations while supporting

their conservation.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ 880-guest cruise

ship, Boudicca, will be operating her first

cruise season from the Port of Falmouth

in Spring 2016. Fred. Olsen will be offering

guests in the South West of the UK a

choice of two sailings: a 12-night ‘Canaries

& Portugal’ cruise – for adults only; and a

10-night ‘Around the UK’ sailing.

Star Clippers is set to add a new addition to

its fleet of Tall Ships. A fourth ship, joining

Star Flyer, Star Clipper and Royal Clipper will

be launched in the Summer of 2017. The new

ship, yet to be named, will be the biggest to

date, carrying 300 passengers, measuring

8,770 tons and will be powered by more

than 6,350 sqm of sails. She will be modelled

on the France II square rigger. In addition

to this, Star Clippers have also announced

exciting plans for a range of Asian itineraries

due to start in December 2017 and continue

through to April 2017. This marks the line’s

return to the region for the first time since

March 2010.

The beautiful Cinque Terre is a

charmingly rugged area of the Italian

Riviera close to popular cruise port-of-

call La Spezia. Known as the ‘Five Lands’

the Cinque Terre comprise five villages

which are connected by the Sentiero

Azzurro walking trail; winding across

relatively flat terrain, walkers are treated

to stunning views of the coast as well as

terraced hills, vineyards and olive trees.

Unsurprisingly, its location means that it

is known for fantastic seafood with local

specialities including anchovies, pesto

and focaccia. The area and its National

Park have been named one of UNESCO’s

World Heritage Sites.

Many cruise lines offer excursions to Cinque Terre National Park from La Spezia or Livorno including Royal Caribbean International®, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas and Oceania.

Cinque Terre, Italy‘The land of gods and heroes’, Taormina is

packed full of remnants of its ancient history,

from portions of its ancient wall still visible,

to fragments of ancient buildings scattered

across the town and the remarkable ‘Teatro

Greco’ theatre – one of the most preserved

ruins in Sicily. The theatre is famous for

its stunning location atop a hill, offering

stunning panoramic views across the sea.

Also visible from the theatre is Mount Etna,

Europe’s most active volcano and one of

its star attractions. Day trips from Taormina

to the volcano are aplenty, with fascinating

walking tours of the crater and summit

offering a chance for you to learn about

volcanic activity and enjoy the stunning

views of Etna Park. Less active visitors can

opt for a ride in the cable car up to 2,500

metres, with a 4x4 ride the rest of the way.

Take a cruise to Taormina with Azamara Club Cruises, Star Clippers, Holland America Line, Silversea and more.

Taormina, SicilyKnown as the ‘Gateway to Olympia’ the

scenic town of Katakolon has long been

popular with visitors wishing to explore the

birthplace of the Olympic Games over 2,700

years ago. Here you can walk in the footsteps

of ancient Greek and Roman athletes

and visit the Archaeological Museum of

Olympia for a fascinating insight into the

history and culture of this iconic destination.

Choose from an organised tour or make

your way there yourself by train – just a

45 minute journey from the port. Closer to

Katakolon itself however there is more for

visitors to see and do, including a trip to the

Mercouri Winery for wine tasting amidst the

stunningly landscaped working farm.

MSC Cruises, Princess, P&O Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Azamara Club Cruises and many more stop at Katakolon, with most cruise lines offering guided tours to Olympia.

There’s a reason why the Mediterranean is still a firm favourite for cruisers; easily accessible from

the UK and on fly-cruises, its sun, sea and varied culture have proved hard to resist since the dawn

of the cruise industry. Let’s take a look at some of the fantastic Eastern and Western Mediterranean

destinations that keep cruisers enthralled year after year…

• The Mediterranean coast runs past

22 countries.

• The Romans called the Mediterranean

“Mare Nostrum” (Our Sea).

• Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, Corsica and

Crete are the five largest islands in the

Mediterranean, and you can visit all of

them on a cruise holiday!

• The hotel scenes from 1996’s epic love story

‘The English Patient’ were not set in Cairo

as depicted in the film, but were actually

filmed in a hotel situated on the Venice Lido.

• La Grand Hotel in Rome was featured in

both ‘The English Patient’ and

the ‘Talented Mr Ripley’.

• The Suez Canal links the Mediterranean

Sea with the Red Sea in Egypt, in the

south. Many cruise ships pass through this

fantastic feat of engineering, which is now

one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

• In Turkish, the Mediterranean is known as

The White Sea (Akdeniz ) and in Arabic it

is known as The White Middle Sea.

• The Mediterranean diet is said to be one

of the healthiest, and particularly good

for your heart! Cuisine varies by region but

is largely based on vegetables, fruits, nuts,

beans, cereal grains, olive oil & fish.

• Mayonnaise was created in Menorca. Whilst

fighting on the island, the Duke de Richelieu

from France, invented a new sauce to serve

to his troops which was an instance success!

Its name became ‘mayonesa’ in Spanish and

Mayonnaise in English.

• Homer, poet and author of the classic

stories Iliad and the Odyssey was born on

the island of Chios, the fifth largest of

the Greek islands; also said to be the

birthplace of explorer Christopher

Columbus.

• According to Greek mythology, Athena

and Poseidon agreed that whoever

gave the city of Athens the best gift

would become guardian over the city.

Though Poseidon gave the gift of water,

Athena’s gift of an olive tree was deemed

by the other gods to be more valuable.

This picturesque island is the cover star of

this edition of Cruisin’ Magazine and for

good reason. Its beaches, medieval history

and gothic architecture are a huge draw for

holiday-makers and cruisers who are looking

for a variety of things to see and do during

their day on shore. Cruise ships dock right

in the heart of the town, and as there is no

terminal building, there is no waiting around

to begin your exploration. Why not take

a trip to the famous Hippie Market or visit

Dalt Vila in Ibiza’s ‘Old Town’ – this is the

highest part of the city where you will be

treated to fantastic panoramic views, and a

treasure trove of historical remnants; from its

Renaissance-era walls and artillery bastions

to secret tunnels. If you just want to relax,

take a walk by the harbour for a spot of

people-watching from one of the local cafes

or restaurants.

Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, MSC Cruises, Princess and Holland America all call into the port of Ibiza. You can either explore on your own or take a shore excursion.

Ibiza, Balearic Islands Istanbul, Turkey

Mediterranean

A hugely popular destination for cruisers

and holiday-makers alike, Athens offers

a fantastic mix of history, culture and

cuisine. Its port, Piraeas, is less than 20

minutes away, making a trip ashore to

explore this iconic destination a quick and

straightforward activity. Don’t miss the

Acropolis, also known as the ‘High City’,

complete with 2500 year old Parthenon,

Odean of Herodus Atticus and the Theatre

of Dionysus. An absolute must if you have

the time, is a walk up to the summit of

Mount Lycabettus where you will be treated

to a fantastic panoramic view of the city and

across the Aegean Sea.

Royal Caribbean, Cunard, MSC Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Princess, P&O Cruises and many more include the port of Piraeas on a variety of cruise itineraries.

East meets West in this exciting city; the

only one in the world to span across two

continents. Europe and Asia collide in the

city formally known as Constantinople;

named after Emperor Constantine the

Great who ruled during its time as capital

of the Roman Empire. Istanbul’s most iconic

attractions are without doubt its stunning

mosques; including the Blue Mosque

(Sultanahmet), Hagia Sophia and Sehzade

Mosque (‘Princes Mosque’); along with

the bustling Grand Bazaar and its 4,000+

stores. If you do find the need to escape

from the hustle and bustle of the city for a

while, consider taking a boat trip along the

Bosphorus to Prince’s Islands. Here, you can

enjoy a horse & carriage ride, tour medieval

monasteries by bicycle or simply enjoy a

picnic by the sea.

P&O Cruises, Cunard, Princess, Royal Caribbean and more all visit Istanbul, with some stopping overnight to give you plenty of opportunity to explore.

Postpone those post-holiday blues for a few extra days by extending your cruise with a land stay! Many cruisers are now opting to add on a city break once their cruise has ended, or most commonly before it even starts; here are our top three cities for extending your cruise…

Dubrovnik A stay in the fantastic medieval town of Dubrovnik is the perfect way to extend an Adriatic cruise holiday. Linger longer by the aqua-blue waters of this increasingly popular part of the eastern Mediterranean and marvel at the old-town architecture made famous by cult TV show ‘Game of Thrones’. You could even take a trip further inland to explore the Croatian countryside and indulge in some wine tasting or a walking tour.

Istanbul Take advantage of the number of cruise itineraries departing from Istanbul by adding a few nights’ stay before you embark. The ‘gateway to Asia’ is the perfect place to get you in the mood for a cruise and to immerse yourself into the hustle and bustle of the city without having to book a separate holiday. Visit the Grand Bazaar or take a ferry across the Bosphorus Strait to give your sea legs a head start.

Rome

Many cruise lines call into Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, however it’s not uncommon for those embarking a ship here to bypass the city altogether. The distance of the port from Rome also means that any time there is often short-lived, making a city break to the ‘Eternal City’ the perfect start to any cruise holiday. There is so much to see and do here from viewing iconic ancient sites such as the Colosseum to taking a food tour to sample delicious Italian cuisine.

WITH A CITY BREAK

In a bid to attract guests of all ages and backgrounds, many

cruise ships state that they have ‘something for everyone’.

However, there may be fewer vessels than you think that can

actually back up this claim, and boast a wide enough range of

facilities and public areas to bring a smile to the faces of children,

parents and grandparents alike.

Royal Caribbean International®

Royal Caribbean International® has always been great at offering

facilities for people of all ages, and their newest ships do this

better than most. Vessels such as Anthem of the SeasSM, Quantum

of the Seas®, Allure of the Seas® and Oasis of the Seas® have so

much happening on board that you can’t fail to find something to

keep you busy during those sea days.

Children will love areas such as the H2O Zone, where they can

splash around to their heart’s content; the SeaPlex, where bumper

cars, circus training, Xboxes, table tennis and other activities will

keep them happy for hours; and the FlowRider, where they can

ride the waves on a surf or body board. Also, exclusive to their

Oasis class ships, kids can meet their favourite DreamWorks

characters and pose for photos with Shrek, Fiona, Kung Foo

Panda and other famous faces.

Adventurous adults can have a go at indoor skydiving in the

RipCord by iFly simulator, or shoot from one side of the ship to

the other via Zipline (Oasis class only). If you just want to take

it easy for a while though, there are plenty of areas in which to

relax as well. Whilst the younger cruisers chill out in the Living

Room, an interactive space for children 17 years and younger;

the solarium, Central Park (Oasis Class only), and the spa area all

beckon you to unwind and enjoy the quiet life.

It’s important to spend time as a family too, and so Royal

Caribbean’s ships offer a range of activities that bring everyone

together. Take a trip high above the waves in the fantastic North

Star viewing capsule, before you refuel with a meal at Jamie’s

Italian. Afterwards, you can settle into the unique Two70° venue

or the stunning Aquatheatre to watch one of many spectacular

showpieces.

AmaViola, AmaWaterways

Luxury river cruise line, AmaWaterways, is turning river cruising

into a family affair with the launch of their newest ship, AmaViola,

in 2016. Whilst the vessel will offer the 5* cruise line’s usual

elegance in the form of spacious staterooms, refined dining areas

and relaxing lounges; there will also be some new additions to

ensure the whole family can sail together in style.

The most notable additions will be six sets of inter-connecting

staterooms, which allow large families to be close to each other on

board. This is a first for the industry and will mean children have

even more space to come and go as they please. These will also be

complemented by other staterooms and suites that can sleep three,

four and five guests, as opposed to the standard two.

As well as facilities such as a heated swimming pool, lounge, and

Sun Deck with retractable roof, kids can bring along their personal

devices and log on to the ship’s complimentary Wi-Fi as much as

they like. And, when the parents decide it’s time to do something a

little more productive, the fleet of bicycles that the ship will carry

will allow for in-depth explorations of each destination or a leisurely

ride along the riverbank.

Additionally, AmaViola will spend longer in port, sailing mostly

overnight, so that you can enjoy an extended time together. What’s

more, there is room for the inevitable flexibility that is so often

needed when you travel with kids, as you can wait until you’re on

board to confirm your place on any of the shore excursions.

Pullmantur Cruises

Pullmantur, an as yet relatively unknown cruise line within the UK

market, brings the European resort experience that many families

will be familiar with to a cruise ship. This makes them a great choice

for groups taking their first cruise together and who are perhaps

MULTI GENERATIONS

Let’s take a look at some cruise lines

a bit apprehensive about what to expect. They have five ships:

Empress, Sovereign, Monarch, Horizon and Zenith, all of which

are packed with facilities that people of all ages will look

forward to.

The children’s facilities are at the forefront, ensuring that they

have plenty to keep them entertained, and there is a dedicated

youth activity team available should you wish to leave them with

the ship’s staff. There is both a kid’s club and a teen’s club so

that younger children and teenagers can take part in activities

that are suited to them, as well as meeting other people of the

same age. Away from the guided activities, kids can head to the

arcade, play by the pool, attempt to conquer the rock climbing

wall (Empress, Monarch and Sovereign only), or get active on the

sports court (Monarch and Sovereign only).

Whilst the children are off enjoying themselves, adults are free

to take it easy in a number of different ways. You could head

to the spa for a pamper session or simply enjoy the excellent

views from one of the lounges. There’s also an expansive casino

if you’re feeling lucky, a night club where you can dance ‘til

you drop, and the whole family can come together to watch a

performance in the Broadway Show Lounge. Finally, mealtimes

will be a breeze with both buffet and a la carte options available

and, due to the Spanish tradition of large families holidaying

together; you’ll be joined on board by like-minded people.

Britannia, Aurora, Azura, Oceana and Ventura – P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises’ fleet includes three ships that are exclusively for

adults. However, the other five are perfect for multi-generational

families looking to sail together. The biggest ship built for the

UK market, Britannia, is the name on everyone’s lips following

its launch earlier this year, and this is a great place to start.

Teenagers can hang out in their very own outdoor deck area,

whilst sports fans can watch the big match, or participate

themselves, in the Sports Arena. Older cruisers may enjoy the

dance and bridge lessons that are offered on every cruise, and

anyone looking to take it easy will love Britannia’s extensive

choice of lounge areas.

Perhaps P&O Cruise’s best family-friendly feature, found across

all the ships mentioned above, is the Reef. This kid’s club is split

into four different sections so that children of various ages can

take part in activities that suit them perfectly. There’s Splashers

(2-4 year olds), Surfers (5-8 year olds), Scubas (9-12 year olds),

and H2O (13-17 year olds); each of which has a range of different

things that include soft play areas and interactive games for the

younger children and pool tables, movies and computer games

for the teenagers.

Whilst the kids are off enjoying themselves, adults can take a

well-deserved rest in the Retreat. This exclusive part of the ship

will allow serenity to wash over you, as you don a plush robe and

slippers, relax in one of the many cabanas, and indulge in some

fresh fruit and other health food options. And speaking of food,

a range of fantastic dining venues on all of the ships, including

Britannia’s enviable list of food heroes, will ensure the whole

family dines out in style.

If you would like to take your entire family on a cruise, there are plenty of wonderful options that we can guide you through. Call today for some excellent recommendations and to book your multi-generational trip.

iWatch (travel apps – citymapper, calcbot) Apple’s latest piece of tech - the iWatch provides a wealth of new opportunities for app developers with some really nifty free apps already out there. Citymapper will ensure you are never late returning back to your cruise ship. The app will navigate you through some of the world’s most prestigious cities; providing directions that will take you from your location to your chosen destination. App developer Tapbots brings the excellent Calcbot calculator to Apple Watch. It also does unit conversion between

temperatures, lengths, weights and more...

Nokia Treasure Tag Heart in mouth moment. You’ve misplaced your laptop

levels are going through the roof. Thanks to modern

technology, this is no longer a problem. Virtual luggage

tags, such as those made by Nokia, can be attached to

items of your choice and will wirelessly connect to any

item using Bluetooth 4.0. If an item is left behind, the tag

Smartphone Projector Obviously, to take a conventional projector onto a cruise ship may be not only excessive but impractical. Likewise,

trying to crowd as many people as possible around a tablet or a smartphone is also difficult. The solution? A smartphone

Royal Caribbean Wow Bands Radio-frequency identification has a range of benefits when it comes to

the world of cruising. Royal Caribbean have already made full use of it with their WOW Bands on board their Quantum Class ships. The band allows passengers to access their staterooms and make on board purchases all

via the swipe of a wrist. But the potential for RFID extends much further. It could be used by stewards to establish whether guests are present in each

stateroom prior to cleaning; or to locate any missing passengers.

There will always be the option to go off and explore on

your own, but if you want to really immerse yourself in

the culture of the places you visit, and get the ‘inside

track’ on each destination, shore excursions led by extremely

knowledgeable, local guides, could be the way to go. Offering

something for everyone, there are activities to suit a variety of

different ages, interests and levels of fitness.

So what are the best excursions on offer from cruise lines

today? Here are just a few of our favourites.

Fabled Machu Picchu – Norwegian Cruise Line Machu Picchu is one of the seven modern day wonders of the

world and something that features on many people’s bucket

lists. Norwegian Cruise Line is offering travellers the chance to

embark on a three day adventure that not only incorporates

a visit to the ancient citadel itself, but also includes a look at

other religious architecture in the Cusco region of Peru.

As the ship docks in the Chilean port of Arica, you will be

transferred to the airport, where you will fly to Cusco. After

spending your first day acclimatising to the altitude and

exploring Sacsayhuaman Fortress, day two will be full of

ancient wonders. You will travel from your hotel to Aguas

Calientes where you will make your way up the winding road

to Macho Picchu in a minibus. At the top, an expert guide will

give you a tour of the site and help you get an understanding

of what this awe-inspiring place would have been like when the

Inca people lived there.

After another night in your hotel, you will be flown back to

meet up with the ship again.

Sultan for the Day – Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises offers a range of shore excursions that are

categorised as Celebrity Exclusives. These include experiences

that you would not be able to take part in elsewhere, and

becoming a Sultan for the day is definitely one. This is your

chance to really indulge and see what it’s like to live the

highlife – for 24 hours at least. Taking place in Istanbul, your

‘Sultan for the day’ experience will start with a morning cruise

of the Bosphorus Strait aboard a luxury yacht. You will take in

unique views of this magnificent city as you are plied with local

delicacies and refined cocktails – and that’s before you’ve even

sat down for breakfast. Your morning meal will be taken in style

when you arrive at Sait Halim Pasha Mansion for a traditional

Turkish feast fit for the Sultan you have become. Once you have

had your fill of the fantastic food and the views on display (if

that’s even possible), climb back onto your yacht and cruise

down to the Old Town for an authentic Turkish Arts performance.

Your time of ruling over Istanbul is not over yet however, as

you continue with a tour of the ancient cisterns that exist under

the city. As your eyes are opened to this hidden world, you will

return to the surface and have some time to explore the Grand

Bazaar, before heading back to meet up with the ship. This is the

perfect place to find some treats befitting of a Sultan.

Hobbiton Movie Set Tour – Princess Cruises

Everyone knows New Zealand as the setting for the Lord of

the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. And, whether you’re a fan of

the films or not, a visit to one of their key filming locations is a

must whilst you’re on North Island. Guests arriving in the port

of Tauranga will have the option to take the one hour coach

journey to visit the fictional place where Bilbo, Frodo and Sam

lived; Hobbiton.

The set was originally taken down after filming had been

completed for the three Lord of the Rings movies. However,

when Peter Jackson returned to bring the story of the Hobbit to

life, the set was rebuilt and turned into a tourist attraction. You’ll

get the chance to see inside Bag End, Bilbo and Frodo’s hobbit

hole, as well as visiting the mill, bridge and gardens.

As your guide shows you every nook and cranny of this

magical place, they’ll also share some tales about what

happened during the filming of these iconic blockbusters. Your

tour will end with something to eat and drink at the atmospheric

Green Dragon Inn and a browse around the gift shop. Be wary of

any old jewellery you may find lying around however!

A Shore Thing Our pick of the best shore excursionsWhen you embark on a cruise, whether by river or ocean, the ship is only part of the overall

experience – albeit many of today’s ships really are quite an experience! What ultimately

makes a holiday an enjoyable one are the cities and towns you visit along the way and all the

wonderful things you get to experience. And the best way to do this during a cruise is by

taking part in one of the many fantastic shore excursions on offer…

Page 25: Christina Astill Cruisin' Magazine June 2015

‘What are the best excursions on offer from cruise lines today? Here are just a few of our favourites.’

A Magical Evening At Binh Quoi Village – Azamara Club Cruises

Amongst Azamara’s shore excursions, there is a selection of

immersive experiences known as Azamazing Evenings℠. These

activities give you the opportunity to see what a destination is like

after the sun has gone down and usually include traditional and

cultural pastimes.

Situated just outside of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Binh Quoi

Village has been designed to reflect what life would have been

like in the Mekong Delta region during times gone by. In beautiful

surroundings that feature coconut trees, thatched buildings,

and serene creeks, your evening will be filled with culture and

tradition. Music, dance and other visual arts will take centre stage

as you’re entertained by the rituals and stories that make this part

of the world so vibrant and mysterious.

Guided Bike Tours – AmaWaterways

Luxury river cruise operator AmaWaterways is known for

carrying a fleet of bicycles on their European ships to help

guests explore each destination in more detail. To a certain

extent, time is often limited and so it’s a lot quicker to get

around when travelling on two wheels as opposed to two legs.

Many of AmaWaterways’ itineraries offer guided bike tours,

either along the riverbank or through the heart of a town, but

there’s also the option to explore on your own. And the best

thing is, regardless of whether you choose to be led or become

the leader of your own adventures, use of the bicycles is

completely free.

Regent Seven Seas Canyon Ranch SpaClub

The Canyon Ranch SpaClub is featured by many different cruise

lines, but is perhaps at its best within the luxurious surroundings

found on a Regent Seven Seas cruise. The treatments on offer here

focus on getting you actively involved in your own wellness, whilst

learning about what makes you feel most relaxed. From facials

and tension-relieving head massages to pedicures and orthotic

assessments, every inch of your body will be looked after and made

to feel brand new.

Before you begin, or perhaps after your treatment, be sure to

make use of the wonderful aromatic steam room; the steam is

infused with plant extracts to create a sensory experience like no

other. Simply choose a relaxing or stimulating scent, depending on

your preference, and then sit back and do nothing at all.

Seabourn The Spa at Seabourn If you’re sailing on board Seabourn Odyssey, Quest, Sojourn or,

from 2016, Encore, you will have access to the fantastic Spa at

Seabourn. The relaxing smell of rosewood will drift over you as you

contemplate which treatment to have from the varied selection.

But, if you can’t decide, the therapists will be happy to custom-

make an experience that suits you perfectly. All products contain

the use of natural ingredients so your mind will be eased as much

as your body.

Before you settle into your pamper session, there are many ways

to prepare yourself for what’s to come. All three current ships feature

the Thermal Suite Lounge, where you can lay back on wood-lined

loungers and enjoy a sauna-like experience. Seabourn Odyssey

also offers a Hydropool with soothing water jets, whilst Seabourn

Quest and Seabourn Sojourn have something known as a Kneipp

Walk. Named after the founder of naturopathic medicine, Sebastian

Kneipp, the walk takes you through different baths in which the water

alternates between hot and cold. This not only helps with circulation

but also has calming and pain relieving effects.

In the Spa at Seabourn, you also have a choice of where your

treatment takes place. You could choose to venture into the

secluded Spa Villas, which offer comfort and privacy, or enjoy your

massage out on the deck with the wind in your hair.

The Best

None

The cruise ship life is pretty laid back as it is, but there is always the option to ramp the relaxation up a notch if you wish. With the wealth of treatments available in the various spas at sea, from massages to skin peels and everything in between, there’s a pamper session awaiting anyone who wants to take it easy for a while.

Here are just some of our favourite spas at sea…

SilverSea The Spa at Silversea

Voted number one spa at sea by readers of Conde Naste Traveler

in 2012, the spa on board Silver Spirit received a perfect score of

100 for its various treatments. Apart from Silver Discoverer and

Silver Galapagos, the delightful Spa at Silversea can be found

on all of Silversea’s ships. However, it is at its most extensive and

spacious on board Silver Spirit.

As well as a total of nine treatment rooms, and spaces to relax

both indoors and outside, you can also choose to unwind in

the outdoor whirlpool. Specific options range from standard

treatments like facials, body wraps, and skin peels to more

elaborate remedies such as aroma stone therapy. All of these take

place in an easy-going environment with stunning views via floor-

to-ceiling windows. If you do want to try something a little bit

different however, the adjacent Hammam chamber provides the

opportunity to enjoy a Turkish bath.

The Spa at Silversea also provides a number of options in the

restaurant that allow you to look after your body. The CruiseLite

menu includes delicious juices in the morning along with evening

meals that are lower in fat, carbs and sodium. You can also

Cruisin’ Magazine 33

Bridge – In cruising terms, the bridge is the part of the ship from which the captain operates the controls. Some vessels have an ‘open bridge’ policy, which means you are free to visit this area and see it for yourself.

Dynamic Dining – Royal Caribbean International® use dynamic dining to give guests the chance to visit a number of different restaurants during their cruise. You can select ‘choice’ dynamic dining if you wish to choose where you would like to eat each evening, or you can opt for ‘classic’ dynamic dining. This second option means you will rotate around the ship’s four main dining areas each night, with the option to book in at one of the signature restaurants instead on any particular evening.

Ex-UK – As an abbreviation for ‘exiting from the UK’, Ex-UK cruises are simply those that depart from one of the many ports around the United Kingdom. Choosing one of these eliminates the need to fly and means you can start your holiday from the moment you leave your front door.

Gala Dinner – There will usually be at least one gala dinner on every cruise and this is your opportunity to get glammed up. Often scheduled at the beginning or end of your itinerary, the gala dinner will be a formal occasion for which a special menu is supplied.

Maiden Call – A maiden call is a port which a ship, or cruise line, has never sailed to before. It could be an up and coming destination in the world or simply somewhere in a region that an operator has only just started sailing to. The term maiden call can also refer to the first port-of-call on any cruise.

Muster Station – The word muster, defined as ‘the assembling of people in one area’, is used in a variety of situations on a cruise ship. Your muster station will be the part of the ship you have to go to in an emergency and will be shown to you during a demonstration known as the muster drill. This will take place just before you set sail so that you are aware of all the emergency procedures. Muster drills are required each time passengers embark the ship, so if you happened to embark a ship mid-cruise, you will undertake a muster drill so that you don’t miss out!

Obstructed View (Obs) – Obstructed view, sometimes written as Obs in a brochure,

is used to determine a cabin which has its outside views blocked by something. This could be because it is situated in line with the lifeboats or because the cabin window is in line with some of the structural elements of the ship.

On Board Spend (OBS) – On Board Spend, often abbreviated to OBS (or OBC for On Board Credit) in brochures and on websites, is free money that cruise operators sometimes give to their guests to spend on board the ship. This could be part of a promotion or offered as a gesture of good will and can be used in facilities such as the onboard spa, restaurants, bars, shops and for shore excursions.

Open Seating – Some cruise lines will stipulate where you have to sit in their restaurants, whereas others will operate an open seating venue. This means that you are free to sit where and with whom you like. Larger ships may have a combination of fixed and open seating dining venues for you to choose from.

Outside Cabin – An outside cabin/stateroom is one which offers sea or river views. This may be through a picture window or porthole, or you may have the use of an open-air balcony. Whilst ocean vessels typically have inside cabins as well as outside ones, it is a rarity on a river ship.

Repositioning Cruise – A repositioning cruise usually occurs at the end of ship’s season and is where it transfers from one part of the world to another. The most common example of this is a ship moving from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean at the end of the northern hemisphere’s summer, or vice versa at the beginning of the warmer period in our part of the world. Repositioning cruises are generally cheaper than standard ones as there isn’t a return journey and some of the facilities may not be fully-operational.

Sailaway – Sailaway refers to the point at which the ship leaves a port. Many cruise lines will make a big deal of this, with music and celebrations on the top deck, especially when leaving the departure port.

Scenic Cruising – You may see the term scenic cruising written on a day-to-day itinerary and assume this means you are merely ‘at sea’ for that period. However, the term scenic cruising is only used when you will be passing close to a point of interest without stopping, so be sure to head towards the windows or up on

deck. You are most likely to see this on a Norwegian Fjords itinerary, river cruise, or an expedition cruise for example.

Single Supplement – Some ships will have a certain number of single cabins, which are perfect for anyone travelling on their own. However, where these don’t exist, are fully-booked, or if you would simply prefer a cabin meant for two, you may have to pay a single supplement. This is an extra fee which compensates the cruise line for you taking up a space that could have been sold to a couple. This amount will vary depending on who you are sailing with but can be as much as 100% of your original cruise fare.

Speciality Restaurant – Most ships separate their restaurants into main dining areas and speciality dining areas (sometimes called ‘signature’ dining areas or something similar). Whilst the main restaurants will usually be included in your fare, you will tend to pay a small surcharge for eating in a speciality dining venue. However, these usually offer a superior dining experience and are often branded as celebrity chef restaurants.

Tender – When a ship is too big to dock directly at a port, it will instead anchor just off the shore. In these situations, smaller ships will be used to ferry guests (and supplies) to the shore and back. This is known as a tender.

Virtual Balcony – Some of the newest, state-of-the-art ships have recently introduced virtual balconies. These hi-tech screens are found in inside cabins and are used to make up for the fact that there are no windows or external views. Operators like Royal Caribbean International® use these to display a live feed of what is happening outside, whilst Disney ships show messages from your favourite animated characters on their virtual balconies.

My favourite shore excursion is the Volcano Hiking and Swimming in Hot

Springs, on my favourite island, Santorini. This excursion covers so much - it

is great for exploring Santorini itself, surrounding Islands, and STUNNING

views! Perfect for the more adventurous, on this excursion you hike to the

rim of a volcano on the Island of Nea Kameni - and after that you can take a

dip in the thermal waters on another island called Palea Kameni. After all this

excitement there is time for shopping and a bite to eat at a local taverna.

This really offers the best of everything - an idylic island with boat tours to

Volcanos, Thermal Springs and a spot of shopping, all whilst drinking in the

glorious views of the most beautiful Greek Islands...

Before Anthem of the SeasSM heads to the States later this year, be sure to take advantage of her while she is

Ingredients50g butter

50g golden caster sugar

Half tsp ground cinnamon

6 medium Cox’s apples or Egremont Russet apples - peeled, quartered and cored

Packet fresh ready-rolled puff pastry

Method

Preheat your oven to 220C/gas 7/fan 200C while you melt the

butter in a 20cm tin over a medium heat on top of the hob.

Stir in the sugar and heat until starting to caramelise. Stir in the

cinnamon before piling in the apples and cook over a medium

heat for about 10 minutes. Stir regularly, ensuring that you

coat the apples in the caramelised juices. Once the juices have

become thicker in consistency, remove from the heat. Unroll the

pastry and prick it all over with a fork. Quickly lay the pastry over

the apples, before trimming away any excess pastry with scissors.

Be sure to allow a rim of about 2cm. Tuck the pastry snugly

round the apples down the inside of the tin.

Bake the tin in the middle of the oven for 20-30 minutes, until

the pastry is risen and golden. Once the tart has cooked, leave to

settle in the tin for 5 minutes or so. Run the blade of a knife round

the edge to dislodge any pastry that has stuck before inverting a

plate over the top and turning out the tart, along with any juices

left in the tin. Serve with cream and enjoy!
