Don’t Forget to Wish For the Best At one point in my teen years I really loved the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping! Being honest “hate” might be a nice word to describe my current desire for the mall madness, store trampling and physical shootings over a pile of stuff. This year I approached it a little differently. We used Amazon Prime! Everything sent to my doorstep and the cost was less then I would have paid for fuel! I did go in one store this Christmas season and had a flashback from my childhood. Right there in front of me. A Sears Wish Book. I hadn’t seen one in years and it brought back some memories. The first Sears Wish Book was printed in 1933. (I don’t remember that. I looked it up.) Over time it has diminished in size and was even discontinued at one point. It was revived in 2007, but the one I saw was nothing in size compared to the books I remember from my youth. Children today don’t really need one. They have the Internet and their high tech toys to cruise the information highway to identify their holiday “wants.” But “back in the day” the Sears Wish Book helped us answer the seasonal question: “If you could have anything for Christmas, what would you ask for?” Every year my brother and I would look through the catalogue and either dog-ear a page or circle our choices in pen. We didn’t want Santa to miss our requests. You may not need the Sears Wish Book today, but you have some wishes too, don’t you? Next Christmas how would you answer the question, “If you could have one thing in the world, what would it be?” Solomon had to answer that one. He asked for wisdom. And God gave it to him. But by the end of his life he had accumulated more and more: more gold, more horses, more wives. He had it all and wanted more. In the midst of all these gifts he lost sight of the Giver. He turned away from God and lost it all. Another King gave us another path to follow. He had it all and gave it all . . . for us. In the Christmas season, or any season for that matter, you can guard yourself from the tyranny of too much stuff by giving. Simply give so that others can simply live. That’s what the King born as a baby in the manger did. And my wish? That you visit the manger and find him. Page 3: Christian Visitor Weekly Newsletterstorage.cloversites.com/firstchristianchurchofgarnettks... · 2017. 1. 9. · OUR Legacy will continue this upcoming Sunday 5:00 “ Hey everybody!

Hey everybody! Hope you had a good Sunday and continue to have a good rest of the week.

Just have some announcements for you. We will have Roots this Wednesday from 5:30-7:00pm Legacy will continue this upcoming Sunday 5:00-7:00pm

At Legacy last night we talked about King David’s last charge to his son and future king, Solomon. After giving some general instructions over kingdom logistics, King David in essence tells Solomon, “be a man, and do what God says.” Solomon starts off his reign incredibly well, but it’s not about how you start it’s how you finish. The King started down a path, that all of Israel followed him on, and to this day has yet to recover from. After looking back over the course of his reign, and realizing the foolish things the “wisest king who ever lived” did, he writes some final words of wisdom found in Ecclesiastes 12: 13-14

“The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.” I found it strikingly ironic that this text that king Solomon wrote towards the end of his life is the same words his father uttered on his deathbed decades before. As Solomon peered over his tainted legacy, he’s haunted by the words that apparently rang in his head, after decades of not living up to the standard that his father set. What I found even more ironic is this. Most of you know my grandfather died November 14 of this past year, and months before he left us, he went to have the arrangements made for how he wanted his funeral to go. The last impression he wanted to make on his loved ones is the exact same text that Solomon left us with, Ecclesiastes 12: 13-14. It’s not how you start; it’s how you finish. My exhortation this week is this, “finish like my grandfather, not like Solomon.”
