Heaven The idea that the soul lives on after the death of the body.

Hell A place where Catholics believe the soul goes after death to be purified.

Immortality A place of paradise where God rules.

Purgatory The belief that after the death of the body, the body stays in the grave until the end of time when it will be raised.

Resurrection Unexplained things that are thought to have spiritual causes, e.g. ghosts and mediums.

• For Muslims life is a test so they believe there must be a judgement in the next life to make sense of this test

• Life after death encourages them to do the right thing

• Life after death makes suffering the effects of evil easier to bear

HEAVEN

Strict Christians such as Catholics believe that people go here straight away if they are perfectly purified. Some Christians believe that only Christians can get to Heaven whereas some believe that all good people (regardless of religion) can get to heaven

PURGATORYCatholics believe that people go here if they die with unforgiven sins. They remain here until their souls are cleansed and then they go to heaven.

HELLCatholics believe that people go here if they die with unforgiven mortal sins and have totally rejected God. Christians believe hell is for all eternity. Some Christians believe that anyone who is not Christian will go straight to hell. Other Christians do not believe in hell at all so everyone will eventually go to Heaven.
