Transcript of Christian Message Title
• The Word “Christian” only appear three times in the whole Bible.
• Acts 11:25-26 “Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”
[Cristiano/ß: one associated with Christ.] • First-century Christians didn’t call themselves
Christians. Outsiders call them Christian, it was a derogatory term.
• The disciples were called Christians at Antioch. Acts 11:26
• So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly. Acts 6:7
• In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha…she was always doing good and helping the poor. Acts 9:36
• Follower of Jesus was called a Disciple: mathetes: learner, pupil, apprentice, adherent, follower.
The real question for each of us to ask is not, “Are we Christians?’” but, “Are we disciples?”
So, What is a Disciple of Jesus?
John 1333 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.”
• "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:33-35
Approximately 55 years after Jesus said that
• 1 John 4 • 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for
love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
• 9 This is how God showed his love among us:
He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4: 9-10
• 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
• 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 1 John 4:11-12
