DearEpiphany,
Whatisspiritualformationandwhyisitimportant?Whyshouldwecare?Whyshouldwecome?SpiritualformationissimplythepatterningandstructuringofourcharacterintotheimageandlikenessofGod.Thatisnottosaywewillallgrowlonghair,straponsandals,andwanderthehillcoun-tryofGalilee;rather,itislivingintodisciplinesthatallowustobeandbecomethatpersonGodhopedforusatourinception.AsGodsaidtotheprophetJeremiah,“BeforeIformedyouinthewombIknewyou,andbeforeyouwerebornIconsecratedyou.”(Jer.1:5a).TrueforJeremiah,andtrueforyouandmeaswell.SpiritualformationistheartandpracticeofknowingourselvesasGodknowsus,ofbeingandbecomingthatfull,whole,complete,andhealthypersonGodcreatedustobe.ThatistheGoodNewsJe-suscametospread.Then,wegiveupseekingtocreateourownkingdom,andinsteadlearntoliveasGodmadeustobeintheworldthatGodcreated;then,wearehappiest,mosthopeful,andgenerallyfullofjoy.TheofferingsdescribedinthefollowingpagesprovidesometoolsthroughwhichtorecalibrateourrelationshipwithGod.Someofthecoursesareintellectualinnature.Othersareinformative,whilesomearepractices.Allseektobuildcommunity,forinthekingdomofGod,relationshipsareprimaryandallelseisderivative.MyhopeisthatwebegintoconsiderSundaymorningatEpiphanyasbothachancetopraiseGodandachancetoexplorewherehopeandjoymeetGod’sgreatestintentforus.
OurChristianEducationHourwillrunfrom9:15amto10:15ameverySundaymorning.Theadulteducationprogram,calledTeach-ingtheEssenceofChristianity(+TEC),offersmultipleclassesforadults,andwewillalwayshavechildcareforinfantsandtoddlers(ages0–4),activitiesforchildren(gradesPreK–5)andadiscussiongroupforolderstudents(grades6–12).PleasetakeamomenttoconsiderwhichofEpiphany’sfallofferingsmightedifyyourspiritu-aljourney.

LastmonthIhadtheopportunitytotraveltothebucoliccampusofSaintJohn’sAbbeyandUniversityinCollegeville,Minnesota,inthecompanyofCarmenHoffman.WeweretheretoattendaworkshoponthepresentationoftheHeritageEditionofTheSaintJohn’sBible,aineart,museum-qualityreproductionofall1,150pagesofelegantscriptandspectacularilluminationsthatmakeupthepricelessorigi-nalvolume.Epiphanyisfortunatetoreceiveonloantwobooksoftheseven-volumeseriesinmid-September:Pentateuch,the irst ivebooksoftheBible,aswellasGospelsandActs.Thisissuchaspecialoccasion,we’veevenplannedapartytocelebrate!
ThosefamiliarwithTheSaintJohn’sBiblehaveauniquepassionfortheproject.FromtheelegantNRSVtexttothestrikingilluminationsgildedwithgoldandsilverleaf,everypageservesitsmission“toig-nitethespiritualimaginationofallpeoplesthroughouttheworld.”Forthoseunfamiliarwithit,somebackgroundwillbehelpfultopiqueyourinterest.
Bylongtradition,monasterieshelpedpreserveknowledgeandcul-turebyprotecting–andcommissioning–handwrittenandilluminat-edbooks.ManyofthesebookswereBibles,ofcourse,butthetradi-tionofwritinginscriptbyhandfellbythewaysidewiththeinventionoftheprintingpress.Itwasn’tuntil1998thatthemutualvisionofworld-renownedartistcalligrapherDonaldJackson,andthebrothersoftheOrderofSaintBenedictatSaintJohn’sAbbeyandUniversity,unitedtorevivethetraditionandmoveitforwardintothe21stcentu-ry.
Jackson,whoselifelongdreamwastocreateaBiblewithcontempo-raryimagery,workedwiththetheologiansofSaintJohn’sAbbeytoincludemodern-dayvisualreferencesintheilluminations.SomeoftheseincludethedoublehelixofDNA,thetwintowers,andrepresen-tationsofadvancesinscience,technology,andknowledgeofglobaldiversity.Gonearethetimewornimagesofelderlybeardedmen,tat-teredanddustyinthedesert.Intheirplacearevivid,relatablepic-turesthateachofuscanidentifywith,andthatbringthewordofGodinourlivestoday.
WhileTheSaintJohn’sBibleisanoriginalvisionforanancientart,thiskindofforwardthinkingistypicalfortheOrderofSaintBenedict,

whosechapelfeaturesaMarcelBreuer-designedbelltowerthatmakesastrikingmodernstatementinitsruralsetting.LikeTheSaintJohn’sBible,itisaspectacularsymboloftheircommitmenttomakethewordofGodrelevanttoourtime.Butwhiletheartworkre lectsacontemporaryviewpoint,thematerialsandmethodsrepresentan-cienttraditions.Eachpageismadeofcalfskinvellum,andwasem-bossedusingturkey,goose,andswanquillspreparedbyeachscribe.TheblackinkfortheoriginalscriptwasmadefromararecacheofChineseinksticksfromthemid-19thcentury;illuminationswerecre-atedfromhand-groundpigmentsofvermilionandlapislazuli,aswellasgoldandsilverleafgild.Gold,symbolicofGod’spresenceintheworld,takesmanydifferentformsthroughoutthe160majorillumi-nationsintheBible.Insize,thebooksaremajestic:fullytwofeettallandthreefeetwide.Thegrandscaleofthepageslendsdramatoboththeoriginalscriptaswellastheilluminations;acombinationoftextandimageintendedtoinvitethereaderintorelationshipwiththeHolySpirit.
Toreachaswideanaudienceaspossible,andtopreservetheoriginalmanuscriptunderidealconditions,Jacksonandthebrothersworkedtogethertoproduceamuseum-qualityeditionoftheBible.This ine-artreproduction,calledtheHeritageEdition,isprintedoncustom-maderagandburnishedinthesamegoldleafandsilvergildastheoriginal.Madeonthesamegrandscaleastheoriginalmanuscript,bothbookshaveastrikingpresencethatnaturallykindlescuriosity.
TheSaintJohn’sBiblewillbeavailableforviewinginthechurchdur-ingbothservices,andbyarrangementintheChristieHouselibrary.Aseriesofsmallstudygroupsisformingforthefall,andothereventsareintheplanningstage.Fornow,markyourcalendarforaspecialpresentationbyFatherEricHollasofSaintJohn’sAbbeyandUniver-sityduringa+TEC(TeachingtheEssenceofChristianity)presenta-tionat9:15amSunday,September15th.Anall-parishpartywilltakeplacethatevening,withaspecialexhibitofartfromtheBible.Inthespring,artistcalligrapherandVashonIslandresidentSuzanneMoorewillcomeandgiveapresentationonherexperiencecreatingillumi-nationsincollaborationwithJacksonathisscriptoriuminMon-mouth,Wales.
