Where did summer go? All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth,
rebuking error, correcting faults and giving instruction for right liv-
ing, so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified and
equipped to do every kind of good deed. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 My brothers and sisters in Christ,
Dee and I sat at the table for breakfast and
commented, “Where did summer go?” As I write,
most of the children start back to school this week, our
young adults head back to college, and even Carl is
getting ready to start seminary. With Labor Day, the
unofficial summer comes to a close.
Where did summer go? Well, at Christ UMC
[CUMC] it was invested in many excellent ways with
some wonderful memories. With summer we said
farewell to Dave and Abby and welcomed Carl
[CUMC’s 4th Pastoral Assistant] —an important time
of transition. We celebrated the graduation of college
and high school seniors and saw several of our college graduates move out of state for their first
jobs [as a side note, why don’t you drop Allen Daugherty & Steve Flinchbaugh a note.] We nearly
tripled our attendance of VBS as we moved to morning VBS and had 44 helpers—that is a Praise
the Lord!! Two weeks later we sent a team of 33 to War WV on our annual mission trip and did 8+
jobs including a couple of roofs and added a family dinner on Thursday night. We could do that
because of your generous and faithful support of the team. We rounded out the summer with a
gorgeous day for Community Fun Day and have ideas for how to make it better for next year
already being discussed. This year the Yorkana Fire Dept joined us and had their rescue truck on
display for kids young and old to check out. Well—you add your own family activities and outings
and that’s where the summer went.
As we begin fall, I want to encourage you to get back into our normal routine. Wednesdays at the
Well begins Sep 10th with supper at 6pm and 2 different Bible studies at 7pm. Carl will be leading
Disciple Fast Track—an excellent 24 week bible survey course. Participants will be doing the Old
Testament between now and Christmas and then study the New Testament in the new year. I will
be leading a traditional Bible study each week.
My friends and partners in faith, please don’t neglect the opportunity to stay grounded in your
faith and grow closer to the Lord. Please make the time to join us for Bible study. I’d love to have to
offer a 2nd Disciple Class because I believe it is absolutely the best course available and now has
been tailored to better integrate into our busy lives. Please join us as we seek to be equipped to
serve the Lord and share our faith.
Thanks for visiting with me. I hope you have had a great summer and look forward to seeing you
in worship on Sundays and at Wednesdays at the Well for a mid-week boast.
In Christ’s service,
Pastor Doug

There’s an app for that!
These days, there’s a smartphone app for just about
everything. But what about spiritual concerns? Where
can you turn?
♦ Depressed? Try the joy app. Isaiah 51:11
♦ Tired? Try the renewal app. Isaiah 40:30-31
♦ Unsettled? Try the peace app. Philippians 4:7
♦ Unloved? Try the love app. Romans 8:38-39
♦ Worried? Try the refuge app. Psalm 46:1
♦ Fearful? Try the power app. 2 Timothy 1:7
♦ Guilty? Try the forgiveness app. Colossians 1:13-14
♦ Praying? Try the prayer app. 1 John 5:14-15
The scriptures are God’s storehouse of meaningful ap-
plications for what we face every day. Think of the Bible
as the iTunes Store of spiritual apps. Best of all, every-
thing’s free! -Timothy Merrill
