When we as a

discerning our relationship
with the ELCA, many of
you expressed an interest
in knowing more about
“Lutheranism”.
I am happy to announce
that I have discovered an
excellent resource for this
conversation and discov-
ery. The course is entitled:
“Lutheranism 101: THE
COURSE” and will be
taught on Sunday
mornings by Pastor Steve
during the Sunday school
hour in the fellowship hall.
Lutheranism 101 will
Christ. I was humbled and
honored to be in their
company. In life there are
ordinary men but in God’s
Kingdom there are giants
in faith. They simple
believe in God and His
Kingdom and are willing
to do whatever it takes to
share Jesus to those in
need. I was blessed to
hear Joseph D’Sousa
preach both Sundays at
the O M b a s e i n
Hyderabad. (I have
shared those learning in
my sermons on August 12
and 19). Joseph D’Sousa
is the head of OM India
and the head of the
Council of Christian
Churches in India. Both
his messages talked about
the lordship of Christ (not
just our savior but lord).
His first message reminded
us that Jesus must be Lord
of our community where
we are to “make every
effort to keep the unity of
the Spirit through the
b o n d o f
peace” (Ephesians 4:3).
Without a commitment to
maintain this unity the
community will fall apart.
He warned us that unity
will be destroyed if: (1) we
are jealous of each oth-
er’s gifts, (2) if there is idol-
atry (immoral, impure,
greed), (3) we don’t
control our tongue, and
(4) we don’t protect
guide marriage and
family life. On the next
Sunday, Joseph shared
that the “temple of
God” (church gathering)
is to be place of
“prayer” (Matthew 21:13)
above all else. When we
make church a place of
prayer where we pray
together, expecting God
to answer and heal, our
I recently returned from
my first mission trip abroad
where I accompanied my
daughter, Megan (and 12
others), to India to visit the
school which a group of
150-200 high school and
college students in the
Norfolk area raised funds
in 2003 to build a school to
educate Dalit children.
The Dalit are a group of
people in India who are
considered outside the
Hindu caste system (in
fact, they are considered
s u b - h u m a n a n d
“untouchable”). However,
the government has
declared the caste system
unconstitutional where if
Dalit people are ed-
ucated they can rise out
of their poverty and slav-
ery into the promise of
new opportunities in
society. OM (Operation
Mobilization) is a Christian
organization that is
bui lding educational
centers (schools) to ed-
ucate the Dalit chil-
dren. OM now has 106
schools and 25,000
children in these schools.
Slowly the Dalit are rising
out of hundreds of years
of cultural and societal
bondage. My daughter’s
heart has been captured
by the children in India
and continues to visit the
school she helped build in
Uddamarri as she brings
school supplies to share in
the class room and give
student/teacher resources
every year. Megan has
wanted me to go for years
so th i s summer I
accompanied her with
the Nebraska team
(people from Norfolk and
Lincoln). While I knew I
would enjoy the school
and the children (which I
did with great joy), I also
asked God to show me
what He wanted me to
learn in India. What I
learned came from the
adult Christian leaders in
India. The amount of faith
they have in God, their
absolute trust that God
will answer their prayers,
t h e i r u n f a i l i n g
commitment, and their
positive and contagious
joy is truly amazing. Each
day our Nebraska team
used the daily texts from
the Moravian church to
guide and encourage us.
Each day I wrote in a
journal my thoughts that
God brought to my mind.
My five senses were
heightened in ways I have
n e v e r e x p e r i e n c e d
before. (My brother, who
planned study abroad
programs for college
students for 25 years, told
me whenever you are in a
new environment, your
senses are a lways
heightened because you
are seeing, hearing,
smelling, touching and
tasting new things every
day).
M y g r e a t e s t
“heightenedness” (if that
is a word) came in my
c o n v e r s a t i o n s a n d
messages from the
leaders in OM (David at
Uddamarri , Binu at
Hyderabad, Raj at
Bangalore and Tangaraj
at Dharmapuri). All of
these leaders truly have a
servant’s heart and a gift
of hospitality. Rarely do
th e y co m p l a i n o r
grumble. They are men of
God who pray, live in
God’s Word, and daily
seek to live out the call of
being a disciple of Jesus

worship will then explode
into praise and cel-
ebration. God re-
vealed to me what I
needed to bring back to
the church in America -
maintain UNITY and
create church where
PRAYER is central to all we
do.
As a result of my trip I
am inviting you to join me
for weekly prayer in the
worship area. We will be
meeting on Wednesdays
at 6:30 pm for prayer. We
will be seeking God with
our whole being, uplifting
our petitions and listening
to what word He brings us
as we gather. Each week
we will be praying the var-
ious names given to God
in the Bible. We will study
the character of God
through these names and
let God reveal to us who
He really is and how He
has acted in the past and
how He has promised to
lead us in every time of
need. We will use
scripture to guide us. We
will listen, pray as God
leads us and pray for any
need that comes before
us. I invite you to join me
and others each week. If
you have never prayed
like this, come and learn.
No one will be required to
pray aloud but as the
weeks pass I believe you
will discover that your
prayer life will change
and mature.
May the unity we have
in prayer “heighten” your
senses in the knowledge
of knowing the living God
in the risen Christ through
the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Pastor Matt’s Letter those who are his disciples
and tells us we WILL be his
witnesses at home and
throughout the world. Will
we be disciples? A chal-
lenge was laid before us
to raise funds for assis-
tance and we have
moved 2/3rds of the way
there. From advent we
are sending $230 to work
in support of families
ravaged by AIDs. Through
VBS and the gifts of 3 peo-
ple we are sending 6 chil-
dren to school for a year,
while also making sure
they have shoes, clothes,
and food. I am proud
and honored to be deliv-
ering this care to these
people who are going to
partner with us, but I also
challenge us not to as-
sume we have done a
great thing, but a good
thing, lest we take Jesus’
direction as a minimum.
At Christ the Servant we
have been blessed to be
a blessing. The hardest
part of that blessing is to
really hear what Jesus is
saying, “you will be my
MARTYROS, in Jerusalem,
in all Judea and Samaria,
and the ends of the
earth.” Did you catch
the word – we are to be
martyrs - sacrificial givers,
and those who give their
life to others for the sake
of the spread of the Good
News. We find that
strength when we under-
stand that Jesus has been
martyred for us to show us
the true depth of the King-
dom of God’s grace. It is
an awesome challenge
and blessing to be the
disciples and children of
God.
As I am away school will
start, the summer will be
rolled up and put behind
But you will receive pow-
er when the Holy Spirit
has come upon you; and
you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, in all Ju-
dea and Samaria, and to
the ends of the earth."
Acts 1:8
I actually am writing this
letter at 3:15 a.m. the Sun-
day before my depar-
ture to Tanzania. Again I
find this trip intimidating
as I am going to travel
alone, around the world,
to be with the people of
the Msaranga Mandaka
Lutheran Parish and
Mchungaji (Pastor) Dalem
Lyattu to begin to unite
our congregations in min-
istry together. This often is
called a mission trip, but in
reality it is not what most
would call mission; but I
am a man on a mission.
For a very long time God
put these people on my
heart. Finally being
blessed to travel to Tanza-
nia in 2009, I found a land
of wonder and of trage-
dy, joy and sadness; all
that I had expected and
feared. There are so
many things I wish to tell
you and to show you of
the land and the peo-
ple, but more im-
portantly I prayerfully
keep imploring the Lord to
give to this congre-
gation a heart of love for
them as well.
The people of this parish,
nearly 2000 strong, walk
for miles to come and
worship God, for all his
blessings in a land that
most in America would
never even consider trav-
eling to see. They give in
coin, and bills, and even
in bananas and chickens,
offerings to God for His
love of them through the
life, death, and resurrec-
tion of His Son, Jesus. And
they pray for the gift of a
bottle of water before it is
opened, because it may
be their last. They offer to
us in the develop-
ment of this partnership –
the gift of faith, hospitality,
understanding of steward-
ship, and a hand to grasp
to with work through life
together in ministry.
What we have to offer are
resources, ideas, support,
and prayer because we
have been so over abun-
dantly blessed. But yet
when I say that, I know
people will think – but I
don’t have much com-
pared to most. That is be-
cause too often we com-
pare ourselves to others in
the wrong direction; we
look to the Trumps, the
Jordans, the Buffetts and
say I certainly am not rich;
and that is true. But if we
were to look in the right
direction, we would see
that we are the Trumps,
the Jordans, and the Buf-
fetts. Our hearts are more
easily than desired to be
acknowledged hard-
ened and closed to the
real and deep need
around us. If I am poor or
homeless here . . . there is
a place to go and have
(because we have so
much). If I am poor and
homeless there . . . where
can I turn. Think about
such things the next time
you do something as sim-
ple as opening your
refrigerator stocked with
food or turning on the
spigot to get a drink of
clean water.
Jesus doesn’t ask us in
Acts, but rather speaks to
Page 3 September 2012 Newsletter
us, life will tighten up and
we will move once again
to the harvest and hear-
ing of the Kingdom of
God. In that time I pray
that you think of the peo-
ple of Msaranga Manda-
ka Lutheran Parish, and
me, as we work to gener-
ate ideas as to where to
head together in ministry,
but also of all those who
have no harvest this year
because there has been
no rain, and the children
who won’t be able to at-
tend school because they
have not been sent, and
the faith of a people
who look to God as the
source of all help in the
midst of each days chal-
lenges in this world; peo-
ple who have nothing
and yet everything.
Then ask, “Who is richer?”
Mungu akipenda tutuo
nana tena.

Pastor Matt wrote his letter
prior to leaving for
Tanzania. Upon his arrival
there, he learned of Pastor
Dalem Lyattu passing the
Friday preceding his arrival.
Please keep the Msaranga
Mandaka Lutheran Parish
and his family in your pray-
ers as they continue to
grieve this loss. Pastor Matt
arrives back in Norfolk on
August 30th. He will be in
worship on September 2nd.

Hunger Day
Saturday October 6th
at the Cox Activity
Center on Northeast
Community College
Campus.
Last year CTS
sponsored and manned
one table at two
different shifts to help
package meals for this
event. (These packages
are very similar to those
that are packed a the
Mercy Meal office at 7th

up of 10-12 people,
7 years of age or older.
There are 3 shifts
available–
9:00 am
11:00 am
1:00 pm
Each shift is two hours
long. A minimum
donation of $100 per
team is being asked of to
reserve a table.
If you are interested in
participating, there will
be a sign-up sheet
located at the back of
the sanctuary. Please
indicate which shift (s)
you are available to
work. This will help in
planning how many
teams we can submit on
behalf of CTS.
Monetary donations
are also being accepted
to help sponsor a team.
Reservations must be
in by Sept 15th, so please
check your calendars
and sign-up soon!
I would like to offer a
personal thanks to all

Why It’s Dangerous: Losing
touch with your body’s nat-
ural hunger and satisfac-
tion signals can lead to
chronic overeating and
unhealthy extra pounds
that can lead to diabetes,
heart disease, and other
serious conditions. If it’s junk
foods you snack on, you’re
also flooding your body
with unhealthy ingredients.
Why You Should Stop: With
determination, anyone can
fix bad eating habits, and
get to a healthier, more
natural weight. By paying
attention to your hunger
signals and switching to
healthy snacks, you can
boost nutrition, control
cravings, lose weight, and
avoid energy slumps. Your
weight will fall to a healthi-
er level, and you’ll replace
unhealthy trans and satu-
rated fat, sugar, refined
carbohydrates, and extra
sodium with more nutritious
fare.
Revers e the Hab i t :
*Reacquaint yourself with
hunger: Wait to eat until
your body is physically

Bad Habit: Snacking non-stop, even when not hungry.
Fall—a Great Time to make
healthy resolutions:
1-Eat Healthy-remember
fruits & vegetables
2-Watch your weight
3-Start a daily
exercise program
4-take time for Self
5-Daily Devotions
Even if you’re not sure it’s
a heart attack, don’t wait
more than five minutes to
call 9-1-1 or your emer-
gency response number.
Every minute matters! It’s
bes t to cal l EMS
(Emergency Medical
Services) to get to the
emergency room right
away. EMS staff can
begin treatment when the
arrive-up to an hour soon-
er that if someone gets to
the hospital by car. EMS
staff are also trained to
revive someone whose
heart has stopped.
Patients with chest pain
who arrive by ambulance
usually receive faster
treatment at the hospital,
too.
What to do:
Heart Attack
craving food.
*Stop eating before you’re
stuffed: Finish when you feel
just a little bit full, you’ll eat
less this way.
*East for the right reason:
Because you’re hun-
gry—not because you’re
stressed, bored, angry, or
sad.
*Stop mindless eating: If
snacking is an old, bad hab-
it, ban unhealthy food from
your home.
Cardiac arrest is reversible
in most victims if it’s treat-
ed within a few minutes.
First, call 9-1-1 for emer-
gency medical services.
Then get an automated
external defibrillator if
one is available and use
it as soon as it is available.
Begin CPR immediately
and continue unti l
professional EMS arrive. If
two people are available
to help, one should begin
CPR immedieately while
the other calls 9-1-1 and
finds and AED.
What to do:
Sudden Cardiac Arrest
September is
Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
As America wrangles daunting issues, no challenge
is more urgent than protecting the health and
wellbeing of our children—now, and as they grow.
Over the past several decades we have witnessed
childhood obesity grow to epidemic proportions.
More that 23 million children and teenagers are
obese or overweight. That’s roughly one child in
every three. Some groups are disproportionately
affected.
These youngsters risk developing serious health
problems in adulthood, such as heart disease, type
2 diabetes, stroke, and several types of cancer. The
financial impact is a sobering $14 billion per year in
direct health care costs alone. The psychosocial
consequences can hinder these kids academically
and socially.
The effort begins at home. Parents have enormous
influence over their children’s lifestyles by the
example they set and the decisions they make. By
modeling healthy eating and physically active
lifestyles, we can set our children on the road to a
lifetime of good habits.
The fight against childhood obesity gains
momentum in September, and the results can last a
lifetime. All children deserve a healthy start in life; it’s
our responsibility to make that possible. Learn more
at www.COAM-month.org.
