However, it is also true that by using the ad orientem posture, the priest turns his face toward God. This, too, is undeniable. When the Catholic Church sets forth rules, when the Church says “no” to something, she is often criticized because someone inevitably feels bad, or isolated, or otherwise unloved and generally in the wrong. Setting aside whether or not the person actually is in the wrong (and if the Church speaks the Truth, that’s something that must be explored), it is helpful to consider what is the the good thing the Church is trying to defend. For every “no” she utters, the Church is trying to say an emphatic “yes” to something else. For example, her “no” to abortion is an emphatic “yes” to the dignity - the very humanity - of an un- born child. Her “no” to the divorced and civilly remarried receiving Holy Communion is an emphatic “yes” to the public and indissoluble reality of marriage, as well as the truth that the Eucharist makes the Church. I find this sort of thinking very helpful when inviting others into the depths of the Church, beyond the most immediate experiences of the Catholic religion, and I find it even soothes my own heart when the Church says “no” and it makes me angry. AD ORIENTEM - A CHURCH WHO SAYS “YES”

One of the common criticisms of the ad orientem posture is that the priest, to use it, must turn his back on the people. This is undeniable. However, it is also true that by using the ad orientem posture, the priest turns his face toward God. This, too, is undeniable.

These two undeniable facts about the one posture make a good analogy for a common struggle in Catholicism. For example, her “no” to abortion is an emphatic “yes” to the dignity - the very humanity - of an un-born child.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Matthew Crane
