THE GIFT OF PEACE “There arose no little dissension and debate.” Did that happen at work this week? Most of us can recall run-ins with coworkers, even with the boss. Did it happen while socializing with friends? Go easy on politics, religion . . . even sports. At home? Even the most peaceful household experiences a little “give and take” now and then. So where was it that “there arose no little dissension and debate”? That tumultuous conflict occurred among our first Christian ancestors, disrupting the community life of the early church. But today’s Acts of the Apostles shows how beautifully the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus in today’s Gospel, helped the church achieve a grace-filled resolution. What evolved was that “reconciled diversity,” often encouraged by Pope Francis and even envisioned in today’s Revelation passage; and a wondrous experience of Jesus’ promised Gospel gift: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” Copyright © J. TREASURES FROM OUR Why is it still Easter? The lilies have long since faded. The roots of our tradition of fifty days of rejoicing from Easter to Pentecost lie in the seven-day rhythm of the Jewish week, drawn from the six days of creation plus a Sabbath day. A favorite name for the Lord’s Day among our ancestors in the faith was “The Eighth Day,” mean-ing that in Christ a breakthrough to a new humanity was achieved. With that inner architecture, it makes sense to see Pentecost as a week of weeks, forty-nine days plus one, again signaling that a new age has begun in Christ and the outpouring of his Spirit. The Jewish appreciation for Pentecost gave rise to the Jubilee year, the fiftieth year, when debts were released and prisoners set free. Today, the character of our Easter Sundays is conveyed by joyful Alleluias and the rite of sprinkling at Mass. Long ago, people expressed this joy by suspending all rules of fasting and by never kneeling at liturgy. These customs all point to our conviction that time is holy. There is an elegant balance to the Christian year: forty days of Lenten fast and discipline give way to fifty days of unrestrained rejoicing. misa de las 9:00 am TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El primer día de mayo es reconocido como el día mundial del trabajo y conmemora seis mártires de Chicago, quienes fueron fusilados en 1886 cuando la policía trató de impedir una pelea campal durante una huelga de obreros. Curiosamente esta fecha no es reconocida por los Estados Unidos pero sí por muchos países latinoamericanos. En 1954, el Papa Pío XII apoyó los derechos del obrero incluyendo a san José Obrero en el calendario cristiano. Esta fiesta celebra y recuerda la doctrina social de la Iglesia católica, una doctrina que insiste que: “El mensaje cristiano no aparta a las personas de la edificación del mundo, ni les lleva a despreocuparse del bien de sus semejantes, sino que les impone esta colabora-ción como un deber” (Gaudium et Spes 34). Es justo conmemorar a san José como obrero en el día mundial del trabajado, porque este santo varón nos recuerda que al trabajar uno colabora con Dios en la creación continua del mundo y de la humani-dad. KHO TÀNG TỪ TRUYỀN THỐNG Sao vẫn còn Phục Sinh? Hoa huệ đã tàn rồi. Gốc rễ của truyền thống mừng Phục Sinh trong 50 ngày, từ lễ Phục Sinh cho đến lễ Chúa Thánh Thần hiện xuống phát xuất từ nhịp sống 7 ngày của người Do Thái, từ sáu ngày tạo dựng trời đất và một ngày nghỉ ngơi của Thiên Chúa. Tổ tiên chúng ta đặt tên cho ngày đặc biệt là ngày “thứ Tám,” nghĩa là Đức Giêsu đã mở đường mới cho nhân loại. Với cái nhìn đó, ta có coi lễ Chúa Thánh Thần hiện xuống như một tuần trong những tuần, 49 ngày cộng thêm một ngày, thể hiện một thời đại mới bắt đầu từ Đức Kitô tuôn đổ ơn Chúa Thánh Thần xuống. Ảnh hưởng của Do Thái giáo cũng dẫn đến năm Toàn Xá, cách nhau 50 năm, nợ được xoá và tù nhân được thả. Chúa nhật hôm nay chúng ta thể hiện sự vui mừng bằng những câu hát Alleluia và nghi thức rảy nước thánh. Trong quá khứ, giáo dân thể hiện sự vui mừng bằng cách ngưng ăn chay và không quỳ trong thánh lễ. Những tập tục này dạy cho chúng ta rằng thời gian được thánh hoá. MÓN QUÀ HOÀ BÌNH Có một cuộc tranh luận không nhỏ. Có phải điều đó dã xãy ra ở nơi công sở tuần nầy không? Hầu hết chúng ta đều có xích mích với đồng nghiệp hoặc cả với sếp. Nhưng trích sách Tông Đồ Công Vụ hôm nay cho chúng ta thấy Chúa Thánh Thần tuyệt đẹp như thế nào, được Chúa Giêsu hứa qua bài Phúc Âm hôm nay để giúp Giáo Hội triển nở đầy ơn Thánh. Những gì phát triển đạt đến sự “chấp nhận đa dạng” như Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô thường khuyến khích, cũng như lời trích từ sách Khải Huyền hôm nay, và trải nghiệm tuyệt vời với lời hứa của Đức Giêsu trong Phúc Âm: “Thầy để lại bình an cho các con, Thầy ban bình an của Thầy cho các con.” Copyright © J.
