CLC Social Ministry and Mission December 2018

ELCA Mission Partners/Urban Partners Congregation Program December’s Social Ministry emphasis is to provide monetary support for Bethel Lutheran Church, a diverse, urban ELCA congregation in the Miller neighborhood of Gary, Indiana (http://bethelmiller.org and http://facebook.com/bethelmillerbeach). Bethel welcomed a new Pastor in September 2017, the Rev. Joy Heine, and Greg Bueltmann continues as Director of Music. Bethel means "house of God," and members believe strongly “that the God of Jesus Christ truly is present as they regularly gather in fellowship around his Word and sacraments.” CLC has partnered with Bethel over many years in multiple ways, and it is wonderful to continue our relationship with a sister congregation in the City of Gary. CLC began as an ALC mission congregation almost 50 years ago. The ELCA I-K Synod Mission Congregation program has refocused on the needs of some urban, rural, and diverse congregations. Examples of congregations in the Synod which CLC has supported in the past and that no longer need our support are Grace and Peace Lutheran in Evansville (IN) and Prince of Peace Lutheran in Russell Springs (KY). Our goal is to provide at least $2000 in funding (envelope giving + budgeted amount), which will help support the needs and ministries of Gary’s Bethel Lutheran Church within the Northwest Indiana Conference of the Indiana-Kentucky Synod. Use your weekly worship service envelope and indicate “Bethel Urban Ministry” on the line marked Social Ministry with the amount you wish to give in addition to your regular giving. Thank you for supporting monthly social ministry needs.

A Message from Pastor Tim

Two things happen every December: we move into the dark, and into the mad scramble to sell us as much as possible. The first is obvious, of course, as we creep toward our longest night, the winter solstice on the 21st. Every night grows a little longer, sunset earlier and sunrise later. But the dark can also be subtle: for our beloveds with a tendency toward depression, the increasing darkness can make it increasingly harder to avoid spiraling downward. For our beloveds who grieve the season can be one of sadness, mixed with or in place of joy. For our beloveds who feel alone, the ache of this season can be intense. For all of us, as we strive to be faithful in the midst of year-end mania, as we look for the beauty of Advent’s preparation and anticipation, hope and prayer, finding space for reflection can become harder and harder to find -- which is, itself, a darkness, a poverty.

At the same time we move into the mad scramble of sales flyers, Black Whateverdayitis, better-hurry-up-and-buy pressures of our businesses’ end-of-year desperation. This becomes the season to sell us as much as possible, from decorations for the season to gifts to give to... well, I’m not nearly clever enough to come with all the permutations on “sales-worthy” our panicky economy generates. That’s why decorations go out so early (“in case anyone is desperately looking for a Christmas ornament in September”) and why sales flyers get progressively more shrill as we draw near the end of the month. For us who want to experience Christmas as it really is -- the birth of Christ, the gift of God-with-us -- in the midst of a culture’s mania and pressure, it is frankly bewildering to negotiate such polar opposites. And exhausting!

So it is no coincidence, and no surprise, that our Stewardship team chose this month to remember God’s gifts of “Time, Talent, and Abilities.” That first gift seems like the most scarce gift of all this season, doesn’t it? Time. Oh, not that we don’t have plenty of voices hollering about it (usually saying things like “this many days left for shopping!”). But what we need is Time as a gift, a vehicle for experiencing the presence of God, time to dwell in God’s mercy and bask in his grace. This is the gift we maybe need most, time to dwell in God’s light, even here in our darkest month of the year.

In the midst of this busy and pressured season, our community offers moments of time: Wednesday evening Taize’ services to slow your breathing. A Longest Night service on the 21st to acknowledge that Christmas isn’t only joy -- it can also mean heartache, and grief, and depression. Sunday services with brothers and sisters who are also feeling the same conflict of mad scramble and desire for devotion. Christmas Eve services where we will once again hear the old, old story; light candles against the dark; and treasure the words of the angels.

My prayer is that you will receive the gift of time this season, time to dwell in God’s light and feel as loved as you are. Pause just for a second. Breathe just for a moment. Step into the dark, where the light blossoms. Experience God’s grace -- because that’s what December offers. Together, we are moving into the dark, where God’s light shines brightest.

-Pastor Tim

Youth Ministry Newsletter From Clint Mullet, Director of Youth Ministries

[email protected]

As we recover from Thanksgiving and prepare for Advent, the youth here at Christ Lutheran Church have been great examples of joy and hard work. We’ve completed three service projects for our church community, had some great discussions in youth group, and will be wrapping up our Silent Auction fundraiser soon! Service Projects

Bread Baking: Our Confirmation Class took time from their studies to bake pumpkin bread for senior, elderly, and shut-in members of Christ Lutheran Church. The confirmands also wrote holiday cards to go along with the bread loaves. CLC teens and their families delivered the bread loaves and cards as well! This good work helps remind these people that their church family loves them, cares for them, and they are known among us.

Leaf Raking: We raked 5 yards this year! The kids worked hard and had a great time! A special thank-you to them, their parents, and the volunteers who helped out when the work was tougher than expected!

College Care Packages: We have mailed our college care packages! We mailed 13 packages to former youth currently away in school. This past summer, the money raised from the Rummage Sale was designated for service projects. This decision was made by our high school youth! Portions of those funds were used to pay for mailing these packages. I am very proud of our high schoolers’ initiative and their passion!

In December: After spending the month of November focusing on our church family, we will be hopping back into the community for our December service opportunities. We will be volunteering with the Northwest Indiana Food Bank Distribution on December 8th. We will be volunteering at a fundraising event with the Humane Indiana Wildlife Rehab Center on December 15th. Silent Auction

Our Silent Auction for our Summer Missions Trip has been exciting so far! It’s always fun to watch bidding wars start up, see young children placing bids, and the small conversations that start at the tables between people in our church family! Most of all, it’s a joy to see the commitment and passion for our young people displayed through your participation! We have 90 items donated to the auction with bids on over 75% of the items. The auction will wrap up on December 9th! We are looking forward to the end result. Our high schoolers helped with set-up, made posters, and some have donated their own items/services to the auction. I am grateful for their help. Without it, the Silent Auction wouldn’t be the success it has been this year. Reminder for those who have bid: We are instituting a new rule this year for the Silent Auction. If you have the winning bid on a physical item, we will contact you on December 9th. You will have 24 hours from that contact to either pick up your item or make arrangements to pick it up. If we don’t hear from you after 24 hours, you forfeit the item! We will move on to the next highest bid!

News from your Council…. Our Indiana-Kentucky Synod and our denomination (the ELCA) have for many years

encouraged congregations to offer their pastors periodic sabbaticals: an extended period of time for study, personal growth and renewal without the demands of daily parish responsibilities. Last year, recognizing that we have missed the opportunity to offer this renewal in the past, our Council developed and approved a Christ Lutheran Church Sabbatical Policy and Procedure that offers our pastors sabbatical leave of 12 weeks after having continuously served the congregation for 6 years. Sabbatical proposals are to be developed by the pastor in conversation with council, congregation members, and fellow staff.

This year Pastor Tim worked with members and staff to propose a sabbatical focused on “Exploring the diversity of global Lutheran expression through music,” a chance to dive deep into his love for music, especially church music, and broaden his experience and knowledge. The Council approved his sabbatical for May 2019 through August 2019, and they authorized a team to work with him to develop a proposal for the Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program for Indiana Congregations, a competitive grant program that assists congregations in Indiana wishing to provide their pastors with sabbatical opportunities.

We have recently been informed that we have been awarded our grant! These resources will allow us to join Pastor Tim’s exploration of global Lutheran music by inviting speakers and musical groups, learning new hymns and songs, and more. It also allows us to provide Pastor Tim the opportunity to travel to “Bachfest” in Leipzig, Germany; to travel with his family to visit sites related to Bach and Martin Luther; and then to travel with his family and parents to Arusha, Tanzania to meet congregations, musicians, missionaries, and more.

This is a great honor for us as a congregation and an incredible opportunity for Pastor Tim and his family. There will be much more to share as plans develop, but for now please give a “Thanks be to God!” for this incredible blessing and opportunity!

An invitation to be a cheerful giver and help with the CLC Roof Project

At the Annual Meeting of Christ Lutheran on November 11, we learned that we need some extensive repairs to our church roof next year. CLC members were asked to make contributions to that roof project in addition to their weekly offering. Here are two somewhat painless ways you might be a cheerful giver in the next few months. First, if you have a greatly appreciated investment, you may be able to transfer all or a portion of that investment to CLC. Withdrawing funds can have negative tax consequences; however, making the withdrawal a charitable contribution can often be done tax free. Second, if you are over seventy years old and have an IRA, you have an annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) each year. You can have a portion of that RMD sent directly to CLC, and neither you nor CLC will be taxed. I think that some of us can quickly fund the CLC Roof Project, just as we raised the funds to purchase our new and beautiful pipe organ. Contributions from a group of our members can solve our roof repairs. If I can be of help to advise you on one of these two methods to contribute to the Roof Project, please feel free to contact me via phone, e-mail, or personal contact. 219/462-3636 [email protected]. If you have any questions, please contact Jen at the preschool (462-6660 or [email protected]). LLP will host an Open House on Sunday, January 27th from 2pm to 4pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the entire staff and view the classrooms. Please call Jen Gottlieb at 462-6660 ext.14 if you would like to schedule a tour or have any questions. We would love to have you become part of the LLP family!

Extended Day Program Little Lamb is rolling out a new and exciting program! We will begin our extended day this upcoming spring semester. Fifteen children, from our morning Pre-K and Young 5 classes, will extend their day until 1:30. During their extended time they will eat lunch, provided by Valparaiso Community Schools, and participate in classroom activities. Please pray for this new addition to our program.

Fall Service Projects LLP has had three service projects this fall. Our first one was collecting soap for Lutheran World Relief. LLP was able to collect and donate hundreds of bars of soap! Hilltop Childcare was our next service project. We collected boxes and boxes of much needed arts and crafts supplies! Hilltop was thrilled with all the donations! The final service project of the fall is our most popular. We worked in partnership with Housing Opportunities to assist families with Christmas gift-giving. We do this through an Angel Tree. The outpouring of generosity among our families is humbling. We are so blessed to have such wonderful families at LLP!

Fundraisers We would like to thank everyone who participated in our Scholastic Book Fair. We hope you enjoyed the fine quality of the books as well as completed some of your Christmas shopping. We sold approximately $3500.00 worth of books, of which LLP will receive 25%! A special thank you to Mallory Raab for her hard work in chairing this successful fundraiser. We would also like to thank everyone who participated in Thrivent Choice and recommended some of their Choice Dollars to LLP. If you own a Thrivent Insurance policy and qualify for Choice Dollars, please consider LLP as one of your choices. Recommendations are only good for one year, so please consider beginning the year 2019 choosing LLP as one of your choices. LLP Restaurant Night is coming Monday, December 17th at Chipotle. Please support Little lamb Preschool while eating a delicious dinner with your family! Please watch for the special flyer insert, in your church bulletin, as the time nears.

Scholarships We have had several families in need this year of partial scholarships towards tuition. A huge thank you to everyone who has either sponsored a child or gave towards our general scholarship need. We are very blessed to have such a thoughtful and supportive relationship with Christ Lutheran Church.

Chapel Time All of our stories during the month of December center on the Christmas Story. The five older classes also practice daily for the Christmas program they present for their parents later this month. Telling the beautiful Christmas Story and sharing those special songs are powerful ways to spread the good news of God’s love with our preschool families. Please continue to pray for the LLP ministry!

Christian Mission Statement - Little Lamb Preschool, in union with Christ

2019 Annual Budget: So, Where Do We Go from Here?

At our annual meeting on November 11, we passed an annual budget that includes cash needs of $928,970. That sounds like a really big and scary number. How can we possibly make this happen? Let’s break that down a little.

First, realize that for the most part, we already are making this happen! Our budget for 2018 is $744,991, and our annual mortgage was $175,992. In 2018, our mortgage was paid from a separate source of funds (Just Imagine). This campaign concludes at the end of the year, but the mortgage does not – so it will need to become part of the budget. When you add these two “buckets” together, our 2018 needs were $920,983. That’s pretty close to the number we need for 2019.

Second, how does this impact YOU? There are many ways that you can help make this happen. Continue giving the same amounts that you’ve been contributing to the operating

budget and Just Imagine – except the entire amount will now go to the operating budget. We still need the same amount of money, but now it’s all in one place. There will be no separate mortgage fund, building fund, or Just Imagine in 2019.

Consider an increase in your giving. Consider supporting a specific ministry (which we call direct ministry support). This

provides a more tangible way to see how your contributions are supporting our ministries. Some examples of specific needs are altar flowers, wine, and bread. Another example is our Shingles Vaccine project, which will fund much-needed repairs to our 20-year-old leaky roof.

Limit giving to restricted accounts. Other than social ministry, our greatest needs are reflected in our operating budget. This is where we need the funds.

Setup electronic giving, either through the link on our website or through the church business office. Electronic giving consumes fewer resources and gives us a more consistent cash flow.

Direct funds from other sources to Christ Lutheran: Thrivent members can direct their Thrivent Choice Dollars to Christ Lutheran. If you

need assistance, talk to Heather Budnik in the church business office; she’ll be happy to help!

Thrivent members can apply for Thrivent Action Team grants. Each grant is $250, and each member can apply for up to two grants annually. These grants can be used to support specific projects that may be part of the operating budget, such as VBS projects, Trivia Night expenses, and Rally Day picnics.

Amazon users can use smile.amazon.com and set Christ Lutheran Church as the beneficiary.

Continue to serve Christ Lutheran Church and our community through your gifts of your funds, your time, and your prayers.

Advent worship - in December it seems the world is whirling nonstop - Taize worship 7pm the first three Wednesday in December will be a chance to slow

down, listen, and pray.

Gentle music, candles, and silence are all medicine when life is dizzying!

Save the Date—Friday, December 21

Longest Night- the holidays can bring everything into sharper focus - the good stuff like family and gratitude, but also all of the struggles we carry. December 21 is the longest night of the year, and at 7pm our worship service will be a chance to honor our griefs this holiday season and to put them in the hands of Jesus, God With Us.

Please remember that Jesus is the Reason for the Season! As a new tradition at CLC, we are taking up a collection for Christmas gifts for our CLC Staff. If you are interested in contributing, please either drop off your contribution to Jenny at the church office or place it in the offering plate with the designation “Staff Christmas Gift.” It is our intention to divide the funds evenly among all of our CLC staff. Christmas will be here before you know it; please have all contributions in by Sunday, December 17. The gifts will be presented at the Christmas Eve service. If you have any questions, please contact any Church Council Officer.
