2015ANNUAL REPORT

CHRIST CLINICCHARITY MEDICAL CLINIC

Message from Executive Director, Kara HillMost of us are programmed to focus on the tasks ahead with hardly a backward glance at the decisions and progress points already achieved. For this reason, we appreciate the annual report because it offers us the opportunity to reflect on the projects and partnerships that defined the previous year’s work and laid the groundwork for the current year.

2015 was another notable year for Christ Clinic. We continued to successfully provide high quality care to those in need in the community. The nurse practitioners, medical assistants, volunteer doctors, and nurses all worked diligently to provide the best medical care to more

than 4,400 people in our community. Our health outcomes remain high and have greatly improved over the years, and our financial sustainability and frugality is reflected in our year-end financial status. Supporting in Christ Clinic is a smart financial investment in your local community.

With a Board of Directors comprised of visionary leaders, the clinic planned for and announced its biggest change in almost a decade: a new location. The end of 2015 was filled with special facility meetings, lease negotiations, and budget meetings to pave the path for the future of Christ Clinic.

I had a member of the community tell me recently: “The Katy area has adopted Christ Clinic as its local charity.” The patients, staff, volunteers, and board of directors get to see and feel that daily. Thank you, Katy, for choosing to continue to care for those in need by supporting Christ Clinic.

Thank you to the Move CommitteeBeverly Allen, Andrew Armistead, Nettie Armistead, Patricia Bermudez, Ann Cox, Chris Crockett, David Crockett, Tanya Dusek, Michelle Hurd, Uranie Joseph, Scott Lane, Shelley Lignitz, Denise Mayfield, Jerry Massey, Sherry Nelson, Sheryl Ray, Laura Shea, Tammy Smith, Nancy Taylor, and Portia Willis

Mission“Christ Clinic extends the healing ministry of God by offering high quality healthcare and health related services to those who are uninsured or underinsured. We serve those in need with love, compassion, respect and dignity by utilizing a team of caring volunteers and staff.”

History• In 2000, Christ Clinic began as a vision of a Parish Nurse at Memorial Lutheran Church determined to serve the

uninsured in Katy one night per week in the church’s gymnasium from 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM.• In 2006, Christ Clinic moved to 5504 First Street in Old Katy due to the growing medical needs and opened three

days a week from 9:00 AM – Noon.• In 2012, Christ Clinic separated from Memorial Lutheran Church and become an independent

501(c)(3) organization. • In 2013, Christ Clinic hired Kara Hill as new Executive Director and begin operating 5 days per week from

9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. • In 2014, Christ Clinic expanded its hours to include an acute after care clinic from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM.• In 2015, Christ Clinic’s Board of Directors approved relocation to a larger facility at 25722 Kingsland Blvd.

Why we do what we do Our patients are who we see in the community everyday – service workers, child care providers and other low-wage earners - whose employers either do not include access to health insurance or they are unable to afford the options available.

Our patients visit Christ Clinic primarily from three counties: Fort Bend, Harris and Waller Counties. Christ Clinic is able to service all primarily with collaborative support from community partnerships like Access Health, Houston Methodist West, Krist Samaritan Center and MD Anderson.

Our patients come to Christ Clinic having received little to no medical care, therefore, many of the patients are battling one or more chronic diseases. Daily our medical volunteers and staff help patients manage one or more of our top diagnoses: high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

WALK WITH A DOCChrist Clinic’s Walk with a Doc program is held the second Saturday of each month at Rick Rice Park and is a great way for patients, Christ Clinic staff and community supporters to meet and join in the common goal of promoting good health.

Christ Clinic’s Healing TouchBonnie Proctor has been a patient at Christ Clinic for several years and her struggle has been a consistent uphill climb. While she is not completely healed, the fact is that she is alive and can see an end in sight.

Ms. Proctor was always a compliant patient who took charge of her health and well-being, but when she presented to Christ Clinic as a follow up to an extensive hospitalization, she was weak, fatigued, and appeared malnourished. She had severe swelling in her legs, making her unable to walk without a walker. She had entered into stage 4 kidney failure and was critically anemic. She had also developed severe jaundice. When Bonnie arrived at Christ Clinic, she had a bold yellow pigmentation to skin, eyes and mucus membranes. In addition, the disease had begun to affect her brain and nervous system. She had spent extensive time at various hospitals, and was continually diagnosed and treated for liver disease.

After a thorough investigation, Christ Clinic staff was convinced that something was being missed. After many hours of brainstorming, the Medical Director decided to try a course of steroids and to repeat her labs the following day.

The effect was immediate and drastic. Within 12 hours her blood levels increased rapidly in a positive direction, a change which led him to the diagnosis of hemolytic anemia.

After starting on steroids, Ms. Proctor has become stronger and healthier, and her body systems have moved closer to normal. Although we are thankful for her recovery, her story is not over. Steroids are not a long-term cure and she will need her spleen removed to prevent further hemolysis. She has come a long way over the past eight months but our work is not yet done. Without the generosity of our community, patients like Bonnie Proctor might never get the help they need. Through continued community support and relationships, we hope to secure her much needed surgery.

Volunteer Medical Doctor’s Farewell It’s hard to know where to start. The years I have spent at Christ Clinic have been the most rewarding years of my life. I have had the chance to see it grow from a small weekly clinic to what it is now. Along the way I have met some of the nicest, honest, open, and grateful patients I have ever encountered. The staff has always been friendly, cheerful, committed, creative, and always looking out for the patient. I have treated some of the most challenging conditions I have ever encountered and done some procedures I know I couldn’t have completed without God’s help. Along the way I have made some great friendships and been blessed by the love of our staff and patients.

I feel the transition to our new building is at a critical crossroad. We will expand greatly with the extra space and extra providers. However, I feel it is important to keep the personal touch and spend whatever time is needed with each patient to help them reach their best health. I have been involved with clinics in the past who grew too quickly and lost some of that.

We now have seasoned providers with years of experience in dealing with very sick patients. There are still protocols in place, but they are rarely needed anymore because of the experience the providers have. In addition, they have Dr Anthis who they can always turn to for help. I see a great future for the clinic. I just hope it will always remember its roots and stay patient friendly and show the love of Christ as they minister.

Message from the Board PresidentThe past year has been an active one for Christ Clinic and its many great programs to help serve the most vulnerable people in our community. Christ Clinic continues to fulfill its mission and vision of providing reliable, accessible, high quality medical services to those in need.

In addition to the patients served, our board, staff members, and volunteers were busy in 2015 with efforts to strengthen our organization that included: 1. getting patients involved in “Walk with A Doc” programs, 2. improving our existing Acute After Care Clinic, 3. improving patient satisfaction and flow, 4. planning for a successful move to a new location, along with many other great outcome measurements on health indicators.

In 2015, Christ Clinic’s commitment to improving the patient’s care and experience was evident by our commitment to providing quality services and improving patient satisfaction. We are proud to report quality health and service outcomes aligned with national standards for community clinics.

FINANCIALSChrist Clinic ended its 2015 fiscal year in very good financial condition due to the support of our outstanding community. The 2016 fiscal year has significant increases in patients accessing care at Christ Clinic, as well as a new location to accommodate all of our patients’ needs. In return, this requires increased funding. This allows the clinic to continue delivering its high quality healthcare and health related services to the most vulnerable people living and working in our area. We are proud to say that our patient contributions for the 2015 fiscal year was very high. Christ Clinic represents an excellent investment in our community with 87% of funding going directly into programs and services that benefit our patients. Thank you for your support of Christ Clinic and our mission.

Sincerely,

Angel PeñaTreasurer, Christ Clinic Board of Directors
