Finders KeepersA chance discovery of a waterfront plot of land inspires a Victoria couple to realize their dream home.

It was a bit of kismit and a whole lot of persistence that landed homeowners David Schayes and Ed Pountney

on this sprawling bit of waterfront north of Victoria, in North Saanich. Cruising along Arbutus Bay in their boat one afternoon, the pair spotted the acreage from the water and fell for it hook, line and sinker. Avid travellers and collectors, the couple was residing in Deep Cove near Vancouver, but their home, nestled on a 50-foot lot, had become too confining. They dreamed of creating a space that mirrored the homes they’d come to love abroad. While it was love at first sight for this piece of land, it took two years of perseverance to finally land the spot—and start plans for their dream home. “We wanted a place large enough for our friends and family, and still have our own space,” says Schayes of the elegant three-storey home they dubbed Ardmore Hall. Working with architect Nigel Banks, builder Michael Knight and interior designer Richard Salter, the couple drew inspiration from European hotels they’d visited, along with the architecture of modern traditionalist Robert A.M. Stern. But this is not the stuffy mansion of old. As Schayes notes, “This is supposed to be fun.” A series of programmed fountains burst into the air when you enter the stone pillared gates, heralding your arrival as you drive down the cobbled driveway. The exterior is richly landscaped with a mini-Versailles-meets-West Coast esthetic. Designed by landscape designers Rusnak Gallant, custom-cut

granite coping surrounds the water features. The grounds are abundant with colour and texture that changes with the seasons. Japanese maples that line the driveway turn from a deep burgundy to an electric red in the fall. Inside, it’s all in the details. Walls are hand-painted (three coats, all with a brush), some frescoed. Hand-set porcelain floors decorate the bathrooms, with the master featuring Venetian glass mirrors and Carrara marble floors. The home’s personality is strengthened by the owners’ often-quirky collections, which now have breathing room. Over 1,500 Royal Doulton figurines and 17th-century Sèvres porcelains are displayed throughout the main floor, on marble plinths and in custom-designed cabinets. They’re joined by a collection of silver trophies awarded to long-passed celebrities, and a library of first-edition biographies. The south-facing windows and patio provide ample views of the ocean for the guest safely ensconced in one of the many down-filled couches and chairs. Custom stained-glass windows in the kitchen’s lounge and the living room depict several trees on the property. Pountney and Schayes put their favourite memories into their property to reflect their years of travel, with ample space for their circle of family and friends—invit-ing them also to dream, to relax and to have fun. “It’s such as beautiful piece of property,” says Schayes. “We’re caretakers of the place. We feel privileged to have found it.” wl See Sources

New HomeOld WorldHomeowners David Schayes and Ed Poutney wanted the home to look as though it had always been there. Here are their tricks for making modern materials feel timeless.

Paint by HandUsing a brush i-nstead of a roller, though time consuming, achieves the look of classic techniques.

Choose ClassicsThe couple used marble and stone throughout, and opted for English walnut flooring for its uneven grain and texture, to mimic the look of vintage homes.

WallpaperBrunshwig and Fils wallpaper has been around since the early 1900s, and continues to produce era-appropriate reproductions. The couple chose several designs to use throughout the home.

Life of Pi

Yann Martel

National Bestseller

Winner of the Man Booker Prize

A NOVEL

Life of Pi is an original novel that is at once the story of

a young castaway who faces immeasurable hardships on the

high seas, and a meditation on religion, faith, art and life

that is as witty as it is profound. Using the threads of all of

our best stories, Yann Martel has woven a glorious spiritual

adventure that makes us question what it means to be alive,

and to believe.

CHAPTER I

My suffering left me sad and gloomy. Academic study and the steady, mindful practice of religion slowly brought me back to life. I have kept up with what some people would consider my strange religious practices. After one year of high school, I attended the University of Toronto and took a double-major Bachelor’s degree. My majors were religious studies and zoology. My fourth-year thesis for religious studies concerned certain aspects of the cosmogony theory of Isaac Luria, the great sixteenth-century Kabbalist from Safed. My zoology thesis was a functional analysis of the thyroid gland of the three-toed sloth. I chose the sloth because its demeanour - calm, quet, and introspective - did something to soothe my shattered self. There are two-toed sloths and there are three-toed sloths, the case being determined by the forepaws of the animals, since all sloths have three claws on their hind paws. I had the great luck one summer of studying the three-toed sloth in situ in the equatorial jungles of Brazil. It is a highly a intriguing creature. Its only real habit is indolence. It sleeps or rests on average twenty hours a day. Our team tested the slee habits of five wld three-toed sloths by placing on their heads, in the early evening

BIOGRAPHY

BIOGRAPHY ARTICLES LINKS CONTACTGALLERY

Christopher LeBlanc is an aspiring writer and photographer originally from the east coast of Canada. Growing up in the province of New Brunswick, he developed a love for writing and in Grade 12 was offered a Co-Op placement at his local community newspaper, the Sackville Tribune-Post, as a student contributor. With no prior journalism experience, Chris worked vigorously to produce quality content for the Tribune-Post, and throughout his Co-Op placement produced a weekly column on the trials and tribulations of how parents could communicate with their teenagers on a variety of life’s problems and situations.

Chris must have impressed his fellow co-workers, as towards the end of his Co-Op placement he was offered the job of a staff reporter for the summer. The weekly columns continued, but with the addition of news stories, feature stories, and photographing people, places, and things for the Tribune-Post. After four sum-mers working at the Tribune-Post, Chris has gained invaluable experience and an impressive portfolio of writing and photography.

He currently resides in Vancouver, BC, where he is studying for his Master in Pub-lishing, but he will always call the east coast home. If you would like to know more about Chris, please refer to the Contact page for ways to contact him.

Visual Identity Program Design Project

Chris LeBlanc

Nov. 25, 2009

For my Visual Identity Program design project I chose to create a program

promoting my freelance services as a writer and photographer. While originally I had

intended on strictly focusing my design project on creating print documents that I could

send to employers, such as a cover letter and business card, I decided to take this project

a step further by designing a website for my services. This website is designed to provide

those interested in my services with access to my portfolio online. Additionally, I have

included a “Latest News” section on the website so that those interested in my services –

or those who I have previously worked for – can remain up to date on my recent

publishing successes.

I designed the website to take into account that the most important information

should be above the “fold” – that is, above where browsers would have to scroll down in

order to see more content. I have a “Featured Stories” option, as well as a “Featured

Pictures” option, both of which are the first thing browsers see upon entering the website.

My intention with this option is that the content featured would change with each refresh

of the internet browser, to provide people viewing my website with an variety of content

with each visit.

I have also included a biography page that highlights my previous work

experience. I wanted my design for my biography to be simple, yet concise about who I

am and what services as a writer and photographer I can offer. I have also included a

Page 19: Chris LeBlanc Portfolio

layout for accessing my portfolio online. My intent for this entire project was to keep my

design simple, yet easily accessible to potential clients.
