FIVE ACRE WOODSAthens, Georgia
Regarded as a last effort to prohibit over-development, Five Acre woods stands between low income multi-family dwellings and commercialized infrastructure. Athens Land Trust purchased the property with grants from organizations with the site’s best interest in mind. That being, provide a community influenced design with sustainably inexpensive functions. After site analysis and spacial deconstruction, the final proposed design (below) achieves that task.

Centered in the heart of UGA’s campus, the Memorial Garden’s traffic is unparalled. The desire for a planting plan indicative of Georgia’s native vegetation headlined the project. The designing process proved to be challenging when addressing the site’s popularity and also it’s exposure to the sun. With sunken water reservoirs below the lawn space, the site takes advantage of the impervious factors and re-uses runoff for its’ own benefits.

Initially loading the site from University archives, I created an AutoCad layout as a base for design. The dramative slope of the site allowed for a unique viewing vista in such a small place. Therefore, the large set of stairs leading into the space introduced not only my design, but also grand views of UGA’s south campus landscape. Shade trees in the center provide respite for students. Graphically, I used an array of ink pens and markers to create depth but maintain simplicity for easy depiction.
POTTERYTOWN REVITALIZATION
Located east on Broad Street, Pottery Town sits in between
one of Athens’ lost treasures, the Oconee River, and an outskirt of Downtown.
As the old days relied on the River for its functionality, the modern days revisit it’s beauty.
Integrating the natural aspects of a riverfront with the commercial dynamics of downtown life
provides a balance rarely accomplished. Inspiration from successful riverfront parks, such as
Putnam’s Mill, located in Connecticut, provides lawn space for multi-use functions and also formal
boardwalk space for gathering. Typical architecture exhibited throughout Athens is replicated alongboardwalk space for gathering. Typical architecture exhibited throughout Athens is replicated along
East Broad Street. Historic southern homes provided inspiration for the renovated Pottery Town. The neighborhood now exhibits
a facade Athens can be proud of. As Athenians and visitors alike experience the Riverfront park, the Oconee once again benefits the city.
The vibrant and pedestrian friendly city streets connect the successes of Clayton and College Street to the opportunity of the River. The urban
setting created by the Park provides context for a progressive city. Allowing this connection, the Park will sustain itself through the efforts of it’s inhabitants. East Broad Street, Pottery Town,
and the Oconee River co-exist in a balanced manner that supports the importance of sustainable, timeless designs.

A riverfront plaza was created to reconnect the newly revisited streetscape and the existing water front. Gradual, radial steps descend the plaza onto an urban museum showcasing Pottery Town’s history and future. Re-vamping old aspects of cities not only reduces waste and costs, but also reminds habitants of a progressive future without destructive means.

POTTERYTOWN REVITALIZATIONAthens, Georgia
Large scale project addressing cultural issues of poverty and riverfront degredation. The attraction, for me, was the character of Athens built by the iconic Oconee river. A classic streetfront with parking on either side allows for pedestrian mobility as well as safety. Stores will thrive with provided outdoor seating and resilient shade trees. Designed in AutoCad, rendered in Photoshop.
