The Mu ff in man was three feet high, age d 78, wor e a beaver hat , and sold his muffins from a basket. This is estimated between £120-150. Some thing of a local celebrit y at the time, it is no surprise that Cheltenham Museum and Art Gallery have several portraits of him in their collection. For the boys that never grew up, Lot 10 includes several first editions of Ian Fleming’s James Bond books . These highly collectable volumes have their original dust jackets with the striking designs by Richard Chopping and are estimated at £500-800. A pair of oil paintings by Bristol artist Edward Bird typify the genre scene s in which he sp ecialised. Entitled Dancing to the Fiddler’s Tune and The Card Game, both show dark cramped interiors enlivened by the fresh colours of the clothing and faces of the characters depicted, the pair, Lot 82 ask £6,000-8,000. Many people believe that industrial scale wind turbines are an ugly waste of money; Chorley’s are pleased to offer an alternative in Lot 270, a Dutch silver model of a windmill. This is altogether more attractive and buyers should not need to rely on subsidies, the estimate is just £400-600. A selection of quality  jewellery will also bring a festive sparkle to the eye. pieces including Lot 286, an attractive pair of diamond setpendant earrings estimated at £700-900, Lot 285, adiamond five stone ring for £400-600 and a diamond barbrooch, Lot 291 at £800-1,200.

A stronger than usual selection of textiles includes a

number of needlework samplers as well as some 17 th

Century needlework pictures. The most decorative ofthese is perhaps Lot 372 depicting the return of theprodigal son, retaining much of its original colour, itincludes a wonderful depiction of a camel and asks £600-800.

Some of the best value antiques available at present are tobe found in furniture sales and Chorley’s furnituresection in this sale includes 120 lots of furniture.

Highlights include Lot 624, an attractive Victorian setteewith buttoned upholstery and a serpentine frame which istop quality but carries a reasonable £800-1,200 estimate. Acharming 18th century dresser of small proportions, Lot631, would fit even a small kitchen and in keeping withmarket conditions is set to make £500-800. Lot 634, astunning set of six George III ladderback dining chairs,circa 1760 and possibly by the maker Robert Mainwaringask £3,000-5,000, with generous dished seats these wouldbe the perfect chair from which to enjoy Christmas

feasting.
