GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME Please stand

2

O come, O come, thou Lord of might who to thy tribes on Sinai’s height in ancient times didst give the law in cloud and majesty and awe. Rejoice! Rejoice! …

4

O come, thou rod of Jesse, free thine own from Satan’s tyranny; from depths of hell thy people save and give them victory o’er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! …

3

O come, thou key of David, come, and open wide our heavenly home; make safe the way that leads on high and close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! …

5

O come, thou dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here; disperse the gloomy clouds of night and death’s dark shadows put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! …

THE GREETING AND BIDDING

The president welcomes the people and says: Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you: And also with you.

THE LIGHTING OF THE FIRST CANDLE ON THE ADVENT WREATH

The first burning candle reminds us of the plan of God, through the ages, for all people to come to him, walking in his light, to praise his name for evermore.

After the candle is lit the following prayer is said.

Lord Jesus, light of the world, born in David’s city of Bethlehem, born to be our king: enable us to walk in your light as your people and to your glory. Amen.

THE TWO GREAT COMMANDMENTS

Hear O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Please sit or kneel

Choir Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us, Lord have mercy upon us.

Communion Service in G – Francis Jackson (b.1917)

When the Lord comes, he will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Therefore in the light of Christ let us confess our sins.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE COLLECTS

Faithful God, whose promises stand unshaken through all generations: renew us in hope, that we may be awake and alert watching for the glorious return of Jesus Christ, our Judge and Saviour, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came among us in great humility, that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Please sit

FIRST READING: Isaiah 2.1-5 Read by Chris Blake

1The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2In days to come the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it.

3Many peoples shall come and say, ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD!

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE PSALM: 122 Please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated

Jerusalem our home, Alleluia! there God’s people go to bow before his throne. Response I was overjoyed … For Israel’s law, decreed by God eternal, calls us to his temple, Alleluia! there to praise and bless his name for evermore. Response I was overjoyed … My prayer for Jerusalem is that peace may reign within her walls, Alleluia! and I pray for love of you that you her peace may share. Response I was overjoyed …

Text: tr. Albert McPherson (1927-2011, sometime Precentor of this Cathedral) and Michael Wentzell (1939-1973)

Music: René Reboud Reproduced from Together in Song 78 with permission

SECOND READING: Romans 13.9-14 Read by Canon Naomi Nayagam

9The commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet’; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’10Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. 11Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; 13let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and

drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. 14Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL HYMN Please stand

Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art, dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.

3

Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a king, born to reign in us for ever, now thy gracious kingdom bring.

By thine own eternal Spirit, rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all-sufficient merit raise us to thy glorious throne.

THE GOSPEL Remain standing

The Cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat:

Cantor Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Alleluia!

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Matthew: 24.36-44 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

36‘But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38For as in those days before the flood they were eating and

drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. 41Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. 42Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.

For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE SERMON The Ven. Canon Heather Patacca, Precentor

NICENE CREED Please stand

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Please sit or kneel Led by Craig Gray

Let us pray for the world and for the church.

After each petition Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

At the end of the prayers the presider concludes Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE NOTICES Please sit

THE GREETING OF PEACE Please stand

In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

All may exchange a sign of peace.

THE OFFERTORY HYMN

During the hymn, an offering is received to support the Cathedral’s ministry. On average our congregants contribute $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift. Tap and Go facilities are available on the plates.

2

He comes with succour speedy to those who suffer wrong; to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong; to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, where souls, condemned and dying, were precious in his sight.

3

He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, and love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth: before him on the mountains shall peace, the herald, go; and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow.

Every eye shall now behold him robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at naught and sold him, pierced and nailed him to the Tree, deeply wailing, [three times] shall the true Messiah see.

4

Yea, Amen! let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia, [three times] Alleluia. Come, Lord, come!

Charles Wesley (1707-88) and John Cennick (1718-55)
