2

He is the grain of wheat that died, sown in distress and reaped in joy, yielding a harvest of new life. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

He is the vine set in the earth, sharing our life, from birth to death, that we might share in God’s own life. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

3

He is the sun which brings the dawn: he is the light of all the world, setting us free from death and sin. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

THE GREETING AND BIDDING

The president welcomes the people and says: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Let us pray: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Please sit or kneel

Choir Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us, Lord have mercy upon us.

Communion Service in A – Harold Darke (1888-1976)

We have a great high priest who is able to sympathize with our weaknesses. Therefore let us hold fast to our faith and approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE HYMN OF PRAISE (GLORIA) Sung by the Choir Please stand

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Darke – Service in A

THE COLLECT

Everliving God, increase in us your gift of faith, that, forsaking sin and all that hinders us, we may run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Please sit

FIRST READING: Isaiah 5.1-7 Read by Janet Bell

1 Let me sing for my beloved my love-song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. 2 He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watch-tower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. 3 And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. 4 What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done in it? When I expected it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild rapes? 5 And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. 6 I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. 7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his pleasant planting; he expected justice, but saw bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry!

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 80 Please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated

1 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel: you who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth. 2 Stir up your might: and come to save us! Response 8 You brought a vine out of Egypt: you drove out the nations and planted it. 11 It sent out its branches to the sea: and its shoots to the river. Response 12 Why then have you broken down its walls: so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit? 13 The boar from the forest ravages it: and all that moves in the field feeds on it. Response 14 Turn again, O God of hosts: look down from heaven and see; 15 have regard for this vine: the stock that your right hand planted. Response

17 Let your right hand be upon the one at your right: the one whom you have made strong for yourself. 18 Then we will never turn back from you: give us life, and we will call on your name. 19 Restore us O Lord God of hosts: let your face shine that we may be saved. Response

SECOND READING: Hebrews 12.1-13 Read by Canon A/Prof. Avril Brereton

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,2looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. 4In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children—‘My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, or lose heart when you are punished by him; 6 for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves, and chastises every child whom he accepts.’ 7Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline? 8If you do not have that discipline in which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children. 9Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness. 11Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees,13and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL HYMN Please stand

2

Christ has our host surrounded with clouds of martyrs bright who wave their palms in triumph and fire us for the fight. For Christ the cross ascended to save a world undone, and suffering for the sinful our full redemption won.

3

Down in the realm of darkness he lay a captive bound, but at the hour appointed he rose a victor crowned, and now, to heaven ascended, he sits upon the throne in glorious dominion, his Father’s and his own.

St Columba (521-97) tr. Duncan Macgregor (1854-1923) alt.

Australian Hymn Book 123

THE GOSPEL Remain standing

The Cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat:

Cantor Teach us your goodness and justice, O God: let them guide us in the way of holiness. Alleluia!

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke: 12.49-59 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

49 ‘I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! 51Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! 52From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; 53they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.’ 54 He also said to the crowds, ‘When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, “It is going to rain”; and so it happens. 55And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, “There will be scorching heat”; and it happens. 56You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? 57 ‘And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58Thus, when you go with your accuser before a magistrate, on the way make an effort to settle the case, or you may be dragged before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you in prison. 59I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.’

For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE SERMON The Ven Canon Heather Patacca Precentor

NICENE CREED Please stand

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

9

Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their reward we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord. And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing Presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy’s breast, O do thine utmost for their souls’ true weal; from tainting mischief keep them pure and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere.

And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.

William Bright (1824–1901) Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised 397ii

God is speaking by his Spirit, speaking to our hearts again, in the age-long word expounding God’s own message, now as then, through the rise and fall of nations one sure faith yet standing fast; God still speaks, his word unchanging, God the first, and God the last.
